on Nov. 22, 2010, that was the biggest wave day of the 2002-2003 season in So Cal.
i went out (for fun), first at Torrey Pines ... where i got caught in a rip-tide. that took an hour to get out of.
then i went to Del Mar. the waves were a little smaller ... waves were coming from the Northwest, so, shadowed a little bit by So Cal islands.
by the time i got outside, i was a 1/2 mile down the beach ... but at least i wasn't caught in a rip !
just a strong north-to-south current, which is normal when larger waves come from the Northwest.
i spent the next hour swimming North, to get back to where i started. that was a wonderful hour, because there were huge waves (for So Cal) rolling through every 17 seconds.
once i got back to my starting spot, i decided that it was time for FOOOOOOOOOD, and swam back to the beach.
OK, this is where it's about lifeguards. the lifeguard was standing there, all wet. he said, "man, you got major sack !"
i said, "what is sack ?"
he didn't exactly explain.
but, he told me that his job was to keep me in sight, and that when he lost sight of me, he - according to his job description - had to go in the water just to keep an eye on me. he still couldn't see me, so he got out of the water, satisfied that he had acted according to the "Lifeguard Handbook" or whatever they use.
so that's what a lifeguard's life is like in the winter. there was only 1 person in the water that day, and the lifeguard had to watch him.

it's not all staring at teenagers in bikini's, and telling people they can't drink. it can be a demanding job.
