Truth:
Life guards start out making $12-20 an hour part time and have to wait 7-10 years before getting one of the lucrative full time $70k + benefits spots.

Wtf??? There is no reson why they should be making that much.

The article says that there are 14 of them who are full time and salaried who make between $100k and just over $200k per year, benefits etc included.

They also hire 210 part-time and seasonal life guards.

My guess is the full-timers aren't just sitting in a chair all day. They are essentially managers, responsible for hiring and the overall oversight of the beaches. It sounds like what a manager of a fire department would make. Replace a burning building with the water and the jobs seem pretty similar.

This is reminiscent of Foxnews complaining that teachers make way too much money.

First, that kind of money in OC doesn't really get as far as elsewhere

Second, I'm pretty sure saving people is a lot more noble than whatever the fuck you do. It probably doesn't come up much, but that IS what they're trained for you know.

The real key is "benefits included". Depending on what they define in benefits that could easily double their "real" income if not more.

Ehh I'm not really worried about their salaries.

This is what pisses me off:

a “recently retired lifeguard, age 51, receives a government retirement of over $108,000 per year for the rest of his life.” The video also notes that “He will make well over $3 million in retirement if he lives to age 80!”

This is why our state is drowning in debt. We can't afford to continue offering these sort of pensions.

Say your employer pays you $50,000 a year. They also could be kicking in $10,000 a year in health benefits, a defined benefit pension worth a big portion of your salary, social security, term life insurance premiums, short term disability, PTO time, sick time, holidays, cell phone reimbursement, vehicle use, access to facilities, daycare supplements, ect.

While you make $50,000 a year, you might be getting $100,000 a year "with benefits".

Of course it's more noble but 200k is ridiculous and I know how much real-estate is here because I live around here. We don't pay cops that much and they're in danger more than lifeguards are but it's Cali and them getting paid 200k is one of the many reasons why we're in such a huge deficit.

The guy in charge of setting their pay was drowning off a beach once and a lifeguard swam up and was like... hey so... just how much do you not want to drown? and here we are.

The article stated that the "two highest paid" collected over $200k, which probably were the managers of the dept. At that experience level and being in SoCal, that sounds about right.

Speaking of which...

We now need a comparison of the average full-time teacher's salary vs. the average full-time lifeguard's salary in SoCal!
