What's particularly disturbing about this graph is that most of the delta that began in the 80s consists of drug offenders, not violent criminals. The drug laws in this country that began under Nixon and escalated during Reagan's War on Drugs are just ridiculous. Despite all that incarceration cocaine is now CHEAPER than it was in the 80s, and Mexico has turned into a full-blown warzone.

Yep the 80's is also the right about the time mandatory minimum's started going into effect.

Dude got repeatedly nabbed for selling crack...ain't got much sympathy there.

That kind of entrepreneurial spirit built this country ask the bootleggers of the 20's. Hell the city of miami was built in 80's with coke money.

Do murderers get a "One Strike, You're Dead" to go along with this Chinese influenced punishment?
Hey, knock the CCP all you like, but the Chinese justice system gets the job done. It is one of the safest countries on earth, as long as you're not in trouble with the gubment.

I don't give a shit how retarded he is, or how much "less" drugs will be in the community now that he's gone.

I give a shit about the taxes I pay and I didn't sign up for this bullshit.

Uhh...right.

Yeah we just had two people here who were released from jail and what do they do? Go robbing/killing.

One guy was let out early with violent criminal charges and the last time he was arrested had a gun on him. Get out, robs some old lady and then shoots her in the face.

So no laws are not harsh enough or this wouldn't be happening. Because it would either make the morons think twice before doing something or because it would have fried this bastard long ago.

You really think if laws were harsher that this wouldn't be happening? Putting non violent people in jail is what causes them to come out violent.

Or it gets rid of them so that civilized people don't have to deal with them anymore.

The problem is, while we are spending all our money incarcerating these people to no end, we aren't spending that money on education. So it's like a dog chasing it's tail.

Bullets don't cost near as much as incarcerating these people.

IIRC, they should have already had a shot at the k-12 system. Didn't work then. I'd love to see some stats on career criminals that got a decent opportunity to turn around and what they did.

Why bother with 3 strikes then...just make it one strike. Its not like they have any rehabilitation in New york, they get out of jail with a criminal record and have no chance at a legit job that can support themselves or a family.

Why aren't all our prisons hard labor camps?

3 strikes rule for non violent crimes seems kinda harsh but you do deserve something pretty severe if you screw up that many times. I wonder what his punishments for the other 2 times were.

If you continue to show that you cannot live by the rules of society, you will be removed form society. Not sure why this is such a hard concept for some to grasp.

The guy got 5 chances to follow societal norms and choose 5 times to ignore them.

libs.

And they might take away a job from a productive citizen.

It's not. Some thing he needs a bullet instead of 3 hots and a cot. Others think the $$ should be spent on re-education. Maybe that's the ticket. Chinese style re-education camps.

You don't think that other options were tried the first 5 times he was in prison?

Since you're not talking about the bullet (my personal favorite) you must mean re-education. That was never tried a la Chinese style. Sadly.

Don't punish the users; they are doing it in the privacy of their own home - YOU HAVE NO RIGHT!!!

Don't punish the sellers; they are doing it because there are no jobs out there - YOU HAVE NO RIGHT!!!

Don't punish the makers; they are doing it because that is all they know and nothing else - YOU HAVE NO RIGHT!!!

However, the government needs to protect me from the residual evils of drug use! I don't want brown people crossing my borders and bringing their life of crime to my door step - I HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAFETY!!

America has to be the most fucked up nation on drug "warfare". The public crys for safety and unfair treatment of drug criminals, while said publis is shooting, snorting and puffing away in their homes. Pick a side already, you can't have it both ways.

Clearly we did not try hard enough the first 5 times. The 6th time will be the charm.

Some people refuse to believe that certain individuals are simply not able to function as a useful (or even non-harmful) part of our society. Until they realize that, this discussion cannot go anywhere but down.

BTW, I do think that drug laws and enforcement could use some fixing, but, until they are fixed, they are STILL the law and we should strive to follow them (I do not see them as unfair, just somewhat unrealistic).

lets do it! Then deputize a secret police force that has the power to create and modify laws and enforce their punishments in real time!
