Of course the Lakers needed to be physically tougher, but Kobe just didn't do much in that series. He didn't even play good defense.

Well they all played bad defense, but you're right. Kobe did not act like a leader and did not emphasize to his teammates that beating Boston meant playing good defense.

Of course, when they win the title this year, all the Boston fans are going to say "it doesn't count cuz you never beat us".

LOL. Sounds like a fanboi to me :p I like how you made excuses for last year's demise. "They didn't have no heart". No you got beat by a better team.

LBJ got it, he deserved it.

Uhhh, I agree with you! :p

The Lakers did get beat by a better team. Better in the sense that they wanted it more.

But you want to talk about better players? Better coaching? Definitely not. When they Lakers play like they are supposed to, they beat anyone. Celtics twice this year (though I believe the second time was without Garnett). Cavs twice this year.

Bow down and pay your respects before the Mamba striketh you. :p

Then those Boston fans better remember back in the 80's when they beat a ~.500 Houston team for the championship, instead of a much better Lakers team!

You can only play who you play.

Dude, you can say this about any team. They Lakers didn't have the Celtics beat at any position other than SF, Kobe over Pierce - and that's not by a whole lot, and Kobe plays @ SG.

You won't hear me saying that if the Lakers win. There's no franchise in the NBA I respect more than the Lakers and I have such a fierce love/hate relationship with Kobe.

Look, without any excuses or qualifications, the Lakers lost fair and square to a better team last year. If they win this year, I expect them to BE the better team on the court during the Finals.

The Celtics are pretty cooked this year. I don't see them recovering very well from the Chicago series and, even if they beat the Magic, the LeBrons present such problems for the Garnett-less Celtics. As good of a defender as Pierce is, there's no way he's going to be able to stay on LeBron 1 v 1 for seven games. KG would be huge simply because he's such a good help defender. Without him, Pierce is basically on an island with LeBron and that's a matchup LeBron wins every single time because, even if he doesn't score he's going to wear Pierce into the ground. If the Celtics stick someone else on him, LeBron will just score 50 a game. Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but I don't see the Celtics making it much farther in the playoffs.

... it's going to be a hell of a playoffs.

Yup, the sum of the Celtics players and coaches was greaert than the individual Lakers. I'm sure Phil Jackson has impressed that upon his team.

Doc Rivers got more out of his team in the Finals last year than Phil Jackson did. So in that respect, Doc (& KG, truth be told) outcoached Phil.

If Lamar Odom comes up big in the Finals, I think LA has a good chance to beat Cleveland - assuming a Cavs/Lakers finals, of course.

Rockette's suck ass ... so fuckin tired of them having a 7'6" center who is NOT their main scoring option, and having Artest keep shooting when he's 4/29.

Yeah man, you have a 7'6" center who can shoot from midrange, post up and score, kick it to the open man, AND make free throws!!! And what do you do? Run high screens for Artest up top and let him take shots he's not making.

But I digress. As a Laker fan, this is exactly what I want them to do. :p

Scola is Argentinian, dumbass.

obviously my brain fart touched a nerve. tell manu i send my humblest apologies.

They're completely different continents. Period. If you were a true fan of the team, you'd know those kinds of things.

It was a fucking mental mistake...so quit being so fucking holier than thou. And I've been a fan when i was a kid seeing Dream lead us to two titles, when barkely came on board, even when that douche pippen was on our team and then put barkley under a bus, when francis/cat/mo taylor took over, adding yao+tmac, losing yao+tmac to injuries, morey stealing scola away from ya'll for nothing, and til now with artest/yao backed up by brooks, wafer and landry. Sorry you have to endure your share of douchebag fans, but I'm far from a fairweather fan.

Are you putting Garnett at the 4 or the 5? If at the 4, Gasol is better than Perkins. If at the 5, Odom is better than Perkins/Powe/whoever they trot out.

Now if you're saying in the series, the Celtics had the Lakers beat at every position except SG, then I'll give you that. But a series doesn't define players overall, so there is no way in hell that the Celtics have better players.

When there isnt anyone else on your team, and you are running through the basement of the Eastern Conference, that isnt hard to do.

Last year...

Kobe > Allen
Gasol > Perkins
Odom < Garnett
mix < Pierce
bench < bench

so you are saying the following plays dont work...

Z sets a screen at the elbow for lebron, lebron drives, no open shot so he passes it to Z at the top of the key and Z makes the open shot
Z sets a screen on the baseline for lebron, lebron drives, no open shot so he passes it to Z at the corner of the floor and Z makes the open shot.
Z sets a screen in the middle of the floor, lebron drives, no open shot so he passes it to Z for a three pointer.

also, i believe the saying has always been, Offense wins games, Defense wins championships, and what team has the best D in the league?

Great post!

Cleveland has a nice lineup of supporting players. Mo Williams, the Z man, Varejao as "Mr. Hustle", Gibson as "Mr. 3 pointer", Delonte West is tough, can shoot a little and plays hard.

I think you mean biased. Of course people are biased in sports, because they're going to favor their own team. Kinda like how you actually think the Rockets could beat the Lakers? I'm not an idiot, I knew there was a 90% chance my team would fall to the Mavs, but they had a better chance than you do against the Lakers. Outside of the center position (and the production of that individual is highly questionable due to the coach), the Lakers would walk over the Rockets.

Kenny Smith had a recent column about this. He said LeBron is the MVP, Kobe is the best player, and Dwayne Wade is the most exciting to watch. I agree with this.

Fair assessment.

This year's Celtic bench is weak though. No Powe, no PJ, no Posey. Without the 3Ps their weakness are glaring. Scalabrine? Really?

Yeah, pretty sure Tiger was the first billion dollar athlete.

I think he's on track to reach it sometime in the next 5-6 years, but I believe it hasn't happened yet. He should be the first though.

Kobe averaged 35, 5, 4.5 when he had a garbage team in 05/06

He averaged 30/6/7 when he had a good team. Against the Western Conference ;)
