CRTs are better for gaming due to the higher refresh rates. There is no blur during fast color changes like some LCDs have. You can get a high quality LCD that will take care of these issues, but they cost Teh $$$.
That said, LCDs tend to be much more crisp and sharp, so if you do a lot of work with text or characters (coding, or writing, for example) an LCD is for you. Also, things where you need a lot of sharpness, like image editing or 3d rendering are also better served by LCDs.
Really it comes down to what you will do most with the monitor. To me, LCDs are still too cost prohibitive. I can give up 3 or 4 cubic feet of desk space to save over $200. To me, it's not an issue. In another couple yeras when quality 17 inch LCDs get down to the $300 range, I'll start lookin at em.
