I am confused why so many people are getting preformance is lcd's. I like how they look but they are expensive and have slower refresh rates and high dot pitch.Fornt a crt better? that is what i always thought. What is so speacial about lcd's?

They take up less space. If you are going to game a CRT will do but if you want some space you can buy a high quality LCD

Text is much sharper on a high quality LCD using DVI than a CRT. If you are reading a lot of text I would recommend an LCD.

The Samsung 710 (comes in various different models and colors) is an excellent monitor for gaming and multimedia viewing (movies and shit). If I was buying a monitor I would get an LCD and that is the one I would get.

CRTs are better for gaming due to the higher refresh rates. There is no blur during fast color changes like some LCDs have. You can get a high quality LCD that will take care of these issues, but they cost Teh $$$.

That said, LCDs tend to be much more crisp and sharp, so if you do a lot of work with text or characters (coding, or writing, for example) an LCD is for you. Also, things where you need a lot of sharpness, like image editing or 3d rendering are also better served by LCDs.

Really it comes down to what you will do most with the monitor. To me, LCDs are still too cost prohibitive. I can give up 3 or 4 cubic feet of desk space to save over $200. To me, it's not an issue. In another couple yeras when quality 17 inch LCDs get down to the $300 range, I'll start lookin at em.

True.

Basically the only problem most LCDs have for gaming is response time. As long as you pick up an LCD with a response time of 12ms or less you should be ok. At 16ms, you'll probably notice some ghosting.

Contrast.
LCDs have washed out blacks. It's a pain in the arse to play doom3 on my dell 2001fp because everything looks washed out, I find myself using the flashlight 3x more than with my CRT.
Also unless you get the flat glass LCDs, the image will look grainy due to the large gap between each pixel.

Even the fastest LCD monitor is not as good as a CRT. It might be close, but the ghosting is still there.

I have a 712N (12ms), and I can most definitely easily see the ghosting. It's not nearly as bad as the older LCDs, but it's definitely no CRT. I'm sure you could get used to it over time.

colors. i never seen a LCD i fell in love with for glorious color reproduction that tops my diamondtron. some were acceptable, but why pay more for worse? if you watch a lot of videos like i do, CRTs are the answer.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend. I would love to buy a high quality LCd but they are just too damn expensive. I could get a NEC 22" for alot cheaper and would be much better in games. If you have tons of money to spend then go for an LCD, but don't settle for a cheap LCD. IF you are go CRT.

LCD's are cool, but cost more than a crt. You can get a really good CRT monitor for less than 200, plus you can build some biceps while carrying your monitor to LAN parties

Dude, LCDs aren't THAT expensive anymore. You can get a nice as hell Dell 2001FP for the same price as an NEC 22", and both have the same viewable display.

i have a Dell 2001Fp and a NEC FE2111FB and here is what i will say

LCD-
much MUCH better text
doesnt hurt my eyes after reading for a while(3 hours+)
gaming is not that great, good but not great
crappy black
Had to return 5 times before i got one that worked and had less then 3 dead pixels

CRT
MUCH better for gaming
SUPERIOR BLACK
pain the ass to adjust when first got
HUGE
Heats up my small room
Hurt my back when lifting, i am small
hurts my eyes when i use for a long time, espically when reading
Had to return the 930sb because it didnt turn on, got a FE2111SB as replacement because they ran outstock of 930SB, GREAT customer service!!!

In the end, i kept the LCD for myself and gave the CRT to my lil bro who plays EQ2 and HL2, looks fantasic for him. i dont game anymore and do i alot of spreadsheets for school, after using 1600x1200, i never want to go back!!

good luck

Had many CRTs and will have many LCDs in my life, only one set of eyes. Gaming on my 16ms Hitachi is fine, eyes feel better no matter what the task. Perfect geometry is a real nice thing too.
