Indeed it doesn't work that way. 980 will have to come down to $399 or $450 if 980Ti is ~$650-699 due to performance gap and extra vram.

970 will slot in well at its current price, $299 to $339.

We've had this before with the 670/680/770/780/Ti lineup.

Pretty much, they decided to condense it into one numbered series this time. They are getting their marketing down and solidifying their business model.

980 had its reign for long enough, its no big deal if it gets a price drop, true.

Only Titan X owners will be shafted if 980Ti and custom models are around $699. Out of the box, equal performance, runs cooler, quieter. 6GB vram is plenty for 4K gaming so the only Titan X owners who actually benefit from 12GB vram are those on Q-SLI with 3x 4K monitors. For everyone else, ~3month later getting $1K performance for $699 with better designs to boot.

But then again, its not like we didn't see this coming. All those cut-down GM200 dies have to go somewhere if there's on Tesla market for Maxwell.

I can't see them selling enough Titan X to use all of the full dies. After all they were getting better yields with big Kepler. Maybe we have an additional 980 model in the future.

I wouldn't expect the 980's to drop in price right away. They can already be had for around $520.00 with deals. The 980Ti's will be around $700-$750 due to demand.

If anything, the R9-390 might have a real impact on 980's dropping in price.

I doubt many will be retail price either. Look at the 970. Only a handful of stripped out models are actually $329. Most hover in the $350 range (before incentives.) I'd think by the time you add custom coolers, a few overclock features, and the slight factory overclock, these will be going for $699 or so for the average model.

I still don't believe the $649 rumor to be honest. I think it's going to cost $749, with the non-ref cards coming in even slightly higher than that.

I think they may then drop prices following AMD's launch. It wouldn't be the first time NV came out with a high MSRP then quickly dropped it due to competition. Remember the GTX 280? Dropped by $150 not even a month after release if I recall.

Which is why AMD is shooting themselves in the foot (as usual), sitting around waiting for who knows what with there next card, while NVidia is releasing card after highend card and raking in the money. Did Nvidia want to drop the 280 by $150 a month after release? Unlikely, but they already got the extra money from the earlier adopters, so it was to their benefit to hit the market first. AMD is always being reactive instead proactive, waiting for NVidia to release their cards, and then trying to undercut them on price. That's not how you maximize profits. Depending on the performance, AMD may have been able to release Fury at some jacked up price a month ago. Gamers may have complained, but the initial shipments still would have sold out. Then NVidia releases the 980Ti, and AMD may have had to adjust the price downwards, but again, so what, AMD already got the money.

Instead, it looks like NVidia is going to release the 980Ti next week, and AMD will again have to decide how much they want to undercut NVidia to compete. If NVidia does announce a $650 MSRP, based on how close it is to the Titan X in performance, AMD's Fury will have to clearly beat Titan X for AMD to get anywhere close to the rumored $800 MSRP they are targeting. Why would anyone pay $800 for an AMD card with Titan X levels of performance, when they can get an Nvidia one for $650?

Nuts!

I remember when good high-end cards cost like $400.

I have no doubt the TI will cost €750-€800 ish here in Europe...

$649? I can't believe I'm saying this, that's a lot lower than I expected. Price the halo card so high that the next card below it looks inexpensive in comparison. Crap, Nvidia's marketing is working too well. Well done, Nvidia. Well done.

It's definitely a good strategy since no matter how fast Fiji XT is (let's say it's 20% faster than a Titan X) it won't matter because at $850 it will have less RAM so it's perceived as an inferior product, and also we know how bad CF support is compared to SLI, so people will rather go with 2 980Tis than bother with Fiji XT.

I think how well Fiji XT does will decide on how much exposure Freesync has and how many gaming Freesync monitors become available, since Freesync effectively reduces GPU requirements by 50% to maintain syncing with monitor refresh rates (40Hz vs 60Hz). Someone could get a 4K Freesync monitor and a Fiji XT and if its good enough to maintain 40fps at 4K it would be just as good as 2 980Tis doing 60fps, but a much cheaper solution.

It's pretty much inline with many other high end releases in the past. The main thing that irks me here is there is no 6GB full GM200. I think the price could remain the same but it just bothers me that the 980 TI isn't full unlocked @ $650 and something like a 980 GT @550 that has a cluster disabled like this one. Bump the 980 down to 400$ and you have a great top to bottom stack.

The full GM200 6GB will come later, ETA September. Well in-line with what happened with the Titan, 780, 780Ti, Titan Black..

I can tell you performance right now in fact, full GM200 6GB with custom coolers and better power circuitry = OC Titan X performance (Titan X + 20%) out of the box.

Looks pretty nice. Considering how many third-party models are already on the scene, it's amusing how well nvidia have been milking their cards.

Do you predict the 980 metal to be the full chip? Assuming that name is still being used. Anyway, I hope you're right about the Full chip coming later this year as that's what I'm after. Chopped chips concern me for a number of reasons.

Asus teased an upcoming card on their facebook page.

What is blazing fast, keeps its cool under pressure, protected by armor, and you don't even hear it coming?

Read a lot of the remarks.

People actually think its a 980Ti of Titan X.

Imagine that, Red lighting and few say 390x. AMD has a lot of work to do in marketing.

I think $649 is probably right. This is replicating a price structure they used in the past with a Titan card at a $1000 vs the top geforce card. I don't think there will be any price drops any time soon after launch. They never do that unless there is direct pricing pressure from a card that has performance parity.

Titan X will continue to be $1000 until it's EOL and I don't think the AMD Fiji 390X card will put pressure on the 980ti as with all the rumours and hints dropped, the Fiji based flagship will be faster than a 980ti and quite possibly faster than a Titan X as well. If there are 980ti price adjustments it could come about from some sort of cut down Fiji based card that is priced close to the 980ti's price.

$649 is about the maximum threshold you can expect to move enough geforce cards at, and when you get into $800 territory you are talking a price where someone would already have bought a TX. It's a good idea to launch this card quickly at a perceived decent price before the AMD Fiji card. This way they can round up buyers now who may have gone with Fiji instead if they'd have been able to compare both cards at time of purchase.

Even though the card is going to be close to a TX it can't be priced close. There is not much room between a 980 and TX; 30% performance advantage to the TX. Trying to drop a further cut down chip that fits in the middle wouldn't go over well. I think this is why they'd rather go with a card almost good as a TX with a much better price and giving 20-25% more performance than a 980.
