Last day

Tomorrow will be my last day at my current job. I have been here for just a little over 7 years and I am so glad that I am leaving. There is so much that I want to say to some of the people here but I know I shouldnt. I have already taken home all my stuff so I doubt tomorrow will be a full 8 hours.

"So as I head out the door of this place for the last time, let me leave you all with a joke. Knock knock!"

Who's there?

"Not me anymore!"

Good for you. Never burn bridges.

Good luck. I hope to be in your position in a few weeks. I desperately need a change of scenery. In this case, however, I may burn bridges depending on what happens the next few weeks.

I was somewhat tempted to trash my supervisor at my last place, but EVERYONE already knew he was an incompetent twat, so I didn't really feel the need.

Stay strong. If they're bad enough to make you want to leave, they're bad enough to not give a damn about any reasonable critique of yours. At best nobody will be affected, and at worst it will damage your reputation.

Never, ever burn bridges. Best story I ever heard was from a college teacher. She was one of those (self-proclaimed) feminist/power-women in the 70's & 80's and really worked her way up the ladder at a time when there was a lot of pushback on management gender roles. Anyway, she had a horrible male chauvinist boss that she hated, but bit her lip and didn't burn the bridge when she left.

30 years later, runs into him at a party. He's like hey, I remember you! I have this great contracting job that you'd be perfect for! She took it and I think it netted her nearly $100 or $150K as a side job, all because she resisted the urge to burn the bridge when she left all those years ago. Heartwarming awesomeness

Chances of that happening are next to nothing.....but it does happen every now and then.

But in general, yeah, don't burn any bridges.

if it was so bad there how come you stayed for 7 years?

Pros and Cons to everything, clearly there were some pros to his job (even though many things sucked).

Nothing is perfect

I currently don't like my job/some people I work with and how stale it is around here etc BUT it's 5 min away/pays well and I have a nice office. Plus I don't have to travel (which is very rare in my field).

Love leaving a shit job.
7 years is too long, but I`ve had emergency jobs I knew I wouldn`t stay at, and its totally gratifying to leave on bad terms especially if you don`t need to put it on your resume. As I said for a 7 year job though, just not a good idea.

No regrets in doing so for my one job that I only had for a few months. The place sucked and I let them know it when I left.

Good for you, for moving on.

It wasnt always bad. I have been able to promote but have been stuck for 3 years now. Over the last year is when it got really bad and I have been trying to get out over the last year and my chance finally came up. If one person left I might have stayed longer. She is a micromanager and I cant stand the way she talks to and treats people. I would really enjoy taking a dump on the hood of her car but dont think its a great idea.

I had been at my previous job for 6.5 years when the culture started going south. We had management changes as the parent company gradually replaced our people with their people, and they became way more metric oriented as opposed to results oriented, even when they didn't understand their own metrics.

Yeah. I'd never heard of it happening other than that. But it made a great story :awe:

If you're financially independent & don't need industry networking to get around, then burn all the bridges you want  Or if you're a big jerk and will just push through a previously burned bridge anyway, I guess it doesn't really matter! haha.

Now I work in a prison but I will be working at on oil refinery as of Monday.

Are you doing a complete career change? If so, what made you decide to change careers? I ask as I've been in IT for about 7 or 8 years but have thought about changing careers...

Like somebody said before, don't burn your bridges, you might need a reference if your new job doesn't work out.

Good luck and enjoy your new job.
