LOL. HP? Give me a break.

And Sony? The most overpriced proprietary POS crap ever manufactured? :p

Dell rules the roost in the consumer arena and for good reason.

Dell just sucks ok. Newbs buy it. What more do you want to say. Why don't you buy your next desktop from Dell and not build your own? I have a 600m. It's fine when you use it alone, but when you compare it to competition (IBM T42, HP NC6000), you'll see that it SUCKS BALLS.

I would trade laptops with my mom (nc6000) anyday. I hate my 600m. The only reason I dont want to trade is cuz she has XGA display only. The fact is, HP NC-series models have a superior build. Above them all is IBM. I just don't like the LOOK of IBM laptops though.... HP NC6000 looks sleek, black, and sexy.

Here is a nice article for you to read....I have many other sources and reviews on the Dell machine I listed here, but I guess some people are still stuck on the IBM name.

WTH are you talking about? That is 480lb gaming laptop. IBM doesn't even offer anything in that category. Let me put it to you this way, people that are considering buying an IBM laptop, aren't interested in a Dell XPS laptop. But I guess some people just like Dell's cheap looking, pasticy laptops.

The Dell XPS Gen 2 is a very good gaming laptop. But in my opinion, gaming laptops are a HUGE waste of money. If you are a big LAN party person, the Gen 2 is a great mobile solution. It's WAY better than lugging a desktop and an LCD with you. BUT, in 2 years when you can't play the latest and greatest games, you'll just be stuck with a 480lb laptop that can't play the games you want it to. Not good. To me, the ideal laptop should be under 5 lbs (4lbs and under would be even better).

Also, bear in mind that Quanta makes most of the consumer-level notebooks for the major vendors (if you look at an Inspiron 9300 next to a comparably-featured Toshiba Qosmio or HP Pavilion, you'll note the similarities). No major vendor is exempt from problems or customer horror stories.

That said, decide which vendor you trust the most. Then price out the most notebook you can afford within your budget. I'm sure you'll be happy with your decision.

For the last two quarters.... going on three most likely, IBM has held the four top spots in the Gartner decision maker index scores....

Gartner goes out and asks those in purchasing, IT, and users across all business segments (SMB up to LE and Education), and they ask them to rate vendors on support, initial quality, break/fix, etc.....

Out of all vendors, IBM/Lenovo comes out holding the #1 thru #4 postions with their T, R, X, and yes, even the G.......

I'd rather go by that than any PC rag magazine anyday.

I love my D600 with 18 processes running on bootup :D

Huh??? Have yet to meet a laptop from anyone that REQUIRES you to use the restore cd.

You guys are all mentioning laptops that cost like ~$1700+. Personally, that's way too expensive for my tastes. I wouldn't even consider buying a laptop that's more than $1300. And Dell offers huge performance for that kind of budget. IBM, Sony, and Apple don't. The Dell Inspiron 6000 is PC Magazine's Editor's Choice for budget laptops. At $1000, you get a lot of power and battery life (~6 hours), even if it is a bit heavy. What's so bad about a 7 pound laptop? It's not like we're 5 year olds that have like no muscle... And a carrying case/backpack will make it a lot easier to carry around, so quit complaining...

Sigh.... I must be getting old.... Because not too long ago $1700 wouldn't buy you a decent laptop..... You get a lot for you $$ these days. $1700 is a bargain.

OK, you stay happy with your IBM, I will take my Dell 9300 and kick the IBM's butt....lol
I would like to see you take your 9300 to and from work/school everyday without breaking your back and still expecting it to work after it dropping down some stairs.

That "good reason" is price: you do get a lot for your money, SOMETIMES. HP makes better laptops for the money though, regardless of what antiquated opinion you hold.
And why is Sony proprietary? What proprietary-ness do you speak of?

I like how you take the bottom line Latitude and put neat options like 2x256MB DIMM's, 80GB HDD, upgraded WiFi, and DVDRW. Those options will cost out the @$$ on a bottom end model like that.

The 13.3" models use what are called Micro-DIMM's. They are not cheap and impossible to find in DDR2 form. DDR1 models are easier to find, but still not cheap.

Fair enough. You'll note that I didn't call out any brand as "best," and I have no issues with IBM in particular. I merely recommended that he do some research into what he was buying.

BTW, Consumer Reports != PC rag magazine. I think you'll find that their product reviews, being thorough and unbiased by advertising revenue, are some of the most credible.

Um, the two laptops being compared are in the same category and were equipped similarly. What, do you want me to compare a fully loaded Sony to a stripped down Dell? And how is the D410 a bottom end model? The D410 is not a value laptop, it is a light weight laptop. The same category the Sony was in. And the "neat options" I included are options I'd equip any laptop I'd buy. You may like the stripped down sh!t laptop, but I like mine fast, LIGHT and flexible.

Seriously man, don't pretend you know what you are talking about. They are STANDARD 200pin SO-DIMMS. Impossible to find? Here you go. Anything else "impossible" I can help you find?

Then get rid of it. Plenty of people would be happy to grab it in FS/FT if you set a reasonable price :D Then you can fork out 4x that amount or better for your precious IBM or 2x-ish for that HP you love so much.

Let me first ask this: why are you such an asshole?

Second of all, OMGURRIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! The new S-4xx series DOES use regular SO-DIMM's. It was the S-3xx series that used DDR333 microDIMMs. The notebook that uses DDR2 microDIMMs is the Asus W3V (or something like that). OMFG I MADE A MISTAKE!!!! :Q:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q
Seriously, why don't you just go back to OT or whereever you came from and let the ppl here interact without you playing schoolyard jackass.

Thanks

Um, I came from the GH forum where this thread ORIGINALLY began.

And to the question, "why am I such an asshole?" Well after having to defend ANY laptop recommendations OTHER than Dell, it tends to put you in a bad mood. ESPECIALLY if you bring up Sony. And on top of defending other laptop manufactures from the no nothing Dell mob, I've got to dispel all these bullsh!t rumors going on, "Sony's are proprietary," "Sony's are overpriced," "IBM laptops suck because you can get a Dell for so much cheaper," "Dells are SO cheap and great," YEAH! It just gets on my fvcking nerves after awhile. If you innocently got caught in the fire fight going on in this thread, I appologize.

Why do you feel the need to "defend" the non-Dell laptop manufacturers? Maybe if you didn't take it so personally, you wouldn't get so upset.

Just sayin'...

I'm not so much defending the manufactures, but more defending a person from getting incorrect information. Why do I do it? Because I wouldn't like someone else feeding me bullsh!t.

not true. My ibm laptops don't require a restore cd (for a xp refresh) and the same goes for a gateway laptop my friend bought.
