Don't deny the "wow" aspects of the T series IBMs. They are definitely top-class lappies.

I recently purchased an Inspiron 9300 and I love it.

You really can't go wrong with either one. The Dell will be faster and cheaper; The IBM is built much stronger and has a lot of uber-geek features to go with it. Unfortunately, you are paying a high price tag for them :D

LOL. HP? Give me a break.

And Sony? The most overpriced proprietary POS crap ever manufactured? :p

Dell rules the roost in the consumer arena and for good reason.

Yes, if cheap plasticy crap is what you like, Dell definitely rules the roost.

We had the choice to either use Dell equipment Dell D600/610 or HP's nc6000/nc6230. We sent Dell packing after using those models extensively. Dell is just cheap crap. Yes, for poor geeks, Dell is definitely a good fit. For quality, you'd better look elsewhere.

And I like this dumb ass word "proprietary" people like to throw around. Please explain what is so "proprietary" about Sony laptops? This should be interesting.

Why would he want a business class notebook? There's a REASON it's called a BUSINESS CLASS. I highly doubt he's going to walk around in a suit and carry his notebook in a briefcase or something. Sure, IBM's are rock stable, but at a hefty price tag. If you just want good performance, Dell is by far a better deal.

Oh yeah, HP notebooks are SO well built. <sigh>

I wasn't speaking about Sony laptops exclusively when I used the word proprietary. I was referring to the other proprietary sh!t that Sony throws out there. ATRAC3, Memory Stick, et al. Don't be so shallow.

Sure I don't. Dell just sends us equipment to try out to see if we want to purchase from them, but YOU obviously have more of a clue. Yeah, dude.

Oh they're WAY better than Dells. <sigh>

So the discussion was about laptops, and you're talking about other sh!t? WTF? Let's stick to the subject. Sony laptops are no more proprietary than any other laptop. So let's drop that bullsh!t excuse.

Yea, I think the only real reason NOT to buy a Sony would be the price.. they're reeeal proud of those things. - y'know, the T-series ThinkPads/IBMs really aren't that expensive. They're retailing for $1299.00 which is more than the Inspirons but fairly comparable to the Latitude series. And I think most will agree that the T-series wins that race in regards to quality & workmanship.

Ok, let's stick to the subject. Sony laptops are WAY overpriced. Good enough for ya?

Well, the OP should chime in instead of us bickering. Dells are good. If you take care of it, don't slam it down and such, you should be fine. Just know that IBM is a big step up, some people would rather have a better GPU, some would rahter have a lappy that they know won't break.

There is a cult following when it comes to Dell consumer PCs. Pros will never touch the consumer line. They are geared for NOOBS who are more concerned about features and price than long-term reliability. Ever opened a DELL desktop or notebook? You will love your DELL when you fork over $300 to replace that dead HDD.

Sony products have always come at a premium. Check out the Toshiba if you can afford a Toughbook. The Acer notebooks are cheaper than those hyped DELL.

Perfect. Now let's take a look and see if you're taking out of your ass...

We'll compare a Dell's laptop to a Sony's laptop (the one I hold in such high regard). The category I'd like to focus on is the light yet powerful category. The two best laptops for this comparison are the Dell D410 and the Sony S480. So let's take a look at them both and see how they compare.

Dell D410:
3.83lbs
12.1in XGA Display
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (up to 128MB shared)
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 (1.86GHz)
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional, SP2, no media
512MB DDR2 400MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMs
D-Bay plus W/8X DVD+/-RW
80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 5400RPM
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915 802.11a/b/g WLAN miniPCI Card
6 Cell Primary Battery
$2047 = Total (Oooooo, and it's on sale too. AWESOME!)

Sony VGN-S480
4.2lbs
13.3" WXGA TFT Display
nVIDIA® GeForce? Go 6200 with Turbo Cache
Intel Pentium M Processor 750 (1.86 GHz)
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
512 MB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-400, 256 MBx2)
DVD+R Double Layer DVD+-RW Drive
80 GB Hard Disk Drive
Wireless LAN (802.11a\b\g)
Lithium-ion Standard Capacity Battery (BPS2)
$1939.99 = Total (Bad news though, it's NOT on "sale")

Holy crap Pabster, you were right, Dells ARE overpriced...oh wait, you said Sony's were. I guess you were talking out your ass. It would really suck if I got the Sony because I get a bigger screen and firewire, but more importantly I add can add built in extras like XBrite and bluetooth wereas the Dell you can't. The truth is, when you compare Apples to Apples, Dells don't come out much cheaper unless you get some crazy coupon deal. But that doesn't make the Sonys overpriced. And the Sony looks WAY better and to me, is an overall better machine.

So what we've learned here are that Sonys are NOT proprietary and they are NOT overpriced. What other excuse you got Pabster?

<PLONK>

And why don't you check out what you are missing. Look at the prices Sony charges for their "extended" warranty plans. Dell gives you a 4 year plan for the same price Sony charges you for 2! The warranty alone is worth several hundred $. Dell also sends someone right to your door to repair your laptop. Sony? Oops, no, you've got to send it back -- and if you didn't purchase "express replacement" service...

My point is that you can cherry-pick your "apples to apples" on a specific machine. But when you look at the whole product lines -- both Dell and Sony -- we both know who has the better selection, the better prices, and the better service. So quit talking out of your arse.

Ever attempted to contact DELL's toll free support? Have fun decyphering those techs from India. There ain't no free lunch in the extended warranty business.

A friend with a new 8400 is still trying to get in touch with DELL to replace a noisy PSU.

IBM make the BEST laptops imo.

I know a few people who have their old PII laptops from IBM still working flawlessly.

I don't know about the rest of you bickering small-minded peeps turning this thread into a crapshoot, but when I buy a notebook I don't plan to throw it around and drop things on it, therefore I don't see the need for very high quality and higher priced building materials, that's just my choice. You over-opinionated loud-mouth fools are so biased towards your choice of goddamn laptops that you don't give a sh*t what waylman even has to say anymore. Howabout listening to what he needs in a laptop and just giving him some links to some nice products, at which point HE can decide whether or not he needs "high quality" or "bells and whistles". Apart from being a bit humorous at times because of the dumbass bickering, I'm sure waylman doesn't want to sift through 3 pages of bullsh*t for some pointers on laptops he wishes to purchase.

If this point I recommend checking out http://www.notebookforums.com/ for some information.

Does anyone ever plan for things like that to happen? - but you're right, the information is out there, it's now up to the OP to weigh the pros & cons and make a call.

having said that, IBM rules all!!!

Yeah, that is JUST you. WTF?! You don't see the need for better quality? Well you are in the minority. And it seems a Dell is just perfect for you.
