Lamborghini performance for less?

It doesn't take much at all. The cost of those cars is prestige and badge whoring/status/exclusivity plain and simple. They really aren't and never have been all that spectacular at all from a performance standpoint.

Any reasonably sporty starting platform and $10-20k will get you there easily. Hell you dont even need that if all you want is 500+ HP, 11 sec 1/4 and 1G skidpad. Plenty of STOCK cars these days that can do that.

Hell for 50k you can build a tube chassis replica supercar with a twin turbo LS3 with 1200 HP and a curb weight of 1500 lbs that will rape it n every way except bank account and exclusivity bragging rights.

Yup. A lot of "supercars" aren't that fast. Ferrari F430, quarter mile in 12.3....you can break into high 11's with an MR2 Turbo at 330-350whp.

I'd say a budget of $20k-$35k should get a lot of tuner cars into ZOMGWTF Ferrari/Lambo/Porsche killer territory. Plus the cost of the car.

Anything with decent suspension geometry, decent weight balance, and enough room to shove a V8 in can could potentially beat a super car.

C6 Z06 </thread>? Seriously? How boring and predictable.

LS6/7 in a Miata, C6 power, better suspension, and 1,000lbs lighter FTMFW.

Built 2.2L stroker 500+whp MR2? Hell yes.

1,000whp Supra? I'll take two please.

550hp V8 FC RX7? Sure, why not.

666whp turbocharged Lotus Elise? Let's do this.

600whp Evo? Awwww yeah.

I can go on...

So many cars can be modified to go toe-to-toe with supercars.

LS7 twin turbo in a na miata...lol

FTFY 😉

The advantages: the car is exactly the way you want it, which appeals to me. I like cars that are unique and personalized. Insurance will probably be way cheaper. Parts/services are considerably cheaper. Everyone knows a Ferrari or Lambo is supposed to be fast, so it's considerably more surprising when an econo-box or other mundane car goes holymotherofbatshitfast around a track.

it was the first thing that came to mind that is readily available and can put the power down without having to worry about mods 🙂

if you do mods...then yes, sign me up for a V8 miata 😀

$50,000 will buy one all done and ready to go.

This is ridiculous. Yes you can make a Miata do 0-60 in the same time as a supercar and pull as many Gs, but a Miata is noisy and annoying to drive at 60mph, much less 200mph. Heck, you can buy a Mustang from the dealer with 662hp. Do you think that's equivalent to a Lamborghini? If you're bench racing then I guess any car can be a supercar...

To put some numbers to this, I'll look at my favorite track time example: Leguna Seca.

Street car lap times: http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/laguna_seca.html

Race car/some street car lap times: http://www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Mazda_Laguna_Seca

Formula Mazda cars are a solid 8s faster than the C6 ZR1, which is faster than any street Lambo, Porshce, or Ferrari. You can scored a used Formula Mazda for less than $20k. It's a hair faster than a 911 GT3 RSR, a Porsche factory race car that costs god knows how much...

They'll both get beaten by a 250cc SuperKart though. They'll run you $4k-$13k for a used, ready-to-race, example.

So, if you want to beat exotics around the track, drop a few large on a SuperKart and go to town. 😛

Hehe, fair enough. I guess there's a reason why "C6 Z06" is the first car in every "I want a high-perf car on a budget" thread.

Bro, do you even read?

From OP: "When I say performance I mean give it similar handling, braking, acceleration, top speed, etc to the point that it could actually compete with an exotic supercar on a track"

The whole point of this thread is paper racing!

I think you're the one missing the point JCH13. The OP can't possible be dumb enough to not know you can buy an piece of crap car off a scrap yard and drop $30k in mods in it and beat almost anything out there. Bringing up non street legal vehicles like you did is just stupid. Of course you can make something faster for less when you have no regulations to adhere to.

When you use common sense and stick to stock production vehicles, the Z06 is going to be at the top of most people's lists as far as bang for buck goes out of a new car.

And a supercar won't do the same or worse?

Not generally, newer Italian and British supercars are quite capable GT cars, from a ride comfort perspective. Put them in the softest setting and they're a lot like riding in a Lexus.

OP said:

Go troll elsewhere. It's a perfectly valid tangent to the discussion.

What about the nearly stock 2005 R1 that lapped the Nurburgring in 7:24 while the course was open to the public (on road legal tires).

Then they aren't as good as they could be. Everything is a compromise.

The OP seems to be missing the point that exotics may perform quite well on the track, but it's their performance when they're NOT moving that really excels. At the nightclub, golf range, fancy restaurant, hanging on your bedroom wall in middle school...THAT'S where exotics wipe the floor with lesser cars. I don't care if you have $100k in mods dropped on your car, it's just not the same to the general public.

Otherwise, as you mentioned, get a shifter kart.

Tell that to the Mk4 owner of the supra in my showroom right now. At a car show last year his car was next to a GTR black of another one of my customers. Guess what? Supra got way more attention as did a horribly riced out FD that made babies cry....

I was just thinking about how much it would actually cost to modify a typical road car up to the performance level of something like a Gallardo or an F430? When I say performance I mean give it similar handling, braking, acceleration, top speed, etc to the point that it could actually compete with an exotic supercar on a track? What would you use as a base car, and what modifications would you add in order to increase performance to this level? What are the advantages/disadvantages of modding a car up to this performance level vs simply buying a purpose built sports car/exotic?

I believe in the context of 'How much does it cost to outperform an exotic on the track with a modified car? How does that compare to buying a purpose built sports [track] car?' that it is perfectly valid to mention the most cost-effective means of putting down insane lap times with a 'purpose built sports car' that I interpreted to mean a track car.

You must be REALLY stupid to have missed the three mentions of 'modifications' in the OP in order to reach the conclusion that the discussion was intended to "stick to production vehicles."

Go troll elsewhere. It's a perfectly valid tangent to the discussion.

Car show != general public.

Car show != general public.

Uhhhhh. Yea, it does.. or what do you think it means?

Most often, the only reason to own a supercar like the ones mentioned is purely for the owners ability to say "i own that car". The vast majority did not buy it for it's track performance nor it's ride comfort.

To the op, yes, it's possible to get better track performance for less.
