It doesn't take much at all. The cost of those cars is prestige and badge whoring/status/exclusivity plain and simple. They really aren't and never have been all that spectacular at all from a performance standpoint.
Any reasonably sporty starting platform and $10-20k will get you there easily. Hell you dont even need that if all you want is 500+ HP, 11 sec 1/4 and 1G skidpad. Plenty of STOCK cars these days that can do that.
Hell for 50k you can build a tube chassis replica supercar with a twin turbo LS3 with 1200 HP and a curb weight of 1500 lbs that will rape it n every way except bank account and exclusivity bragging rights.
Yup. A lot of "supercars" aren't that fast. Ferrari F430, quarter mile in 12.3....you can break into high 11's with an MR2 Turbo at 330-350whp.
