Again... this is not really a Rockstar game. The main developer is Team Bondi. Rockstar has mainly publishing duties here.

Understood, but I doubt they're going to put their logo on a piece of crap. I suppose it's possible, but they seem to value their good name.

Is it just me, or did the framerate look a bit low in the official trailer?

In any case, I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

Its a PS3/360 focused game (and likely that's what they're showing) so I wouldn't expect great framerates with all they've got going on (looked like average to good graphics with pretty decent shadows and lighting, and of course the stellar facial animation).

Yeah, the facial animation is crazy good. There was some company that makes a competing game or something and they even said how this game had just raised the bar. Some of the characters, I think you can even almost tell who did the acting (there's one later in the trailer that looks a lot like a guy I've seen in some movie, he's not really famous but it looked a lot like him and the facial animations were very similar).

The only thing is that the detective work looks a little too much like Shenmue. You don't really feel like you're solving anything as you're just being led and everything comes off really scripted. The part that really made me feel that way was when he tells the woman she's lying and she says he put the gun in a bin, and then it just shows him walking up to a trash bin and pulling the gun right out. I'm hoping its not really A-to-B stuff like that, and hopefully they really work in some puzzles or something to keep you on your toes. That might be asking too much though, as it could really stall the storyline depending on what they're doing there.

😱 three? I already felt Mass Effect was fairly big with 2. That's definitely a lot of dialog packed onto those discs along w/ 20ish hours of gameplay (as foretold by the devs, if that's any indication 😛)

Yeah, three. It's not just dialogue though. Apparently the facial animation system is a data hog too according to Rockstar's comments.

Just checked out the gameplay video, and it looks pretty awesome. Seems like it has a nice level of depth.

Think I might pick this up at midnight tonight.

Have any sites posted any first impressions or reviews yet? I couldn't seem to find anything on Google, which could possibly be due to an embargo. Think I might wait and see what IGN and Gamespot have to say about this before I pick it up.

IIRC Rockstar usually keeps reviews from being revealed until release. I'm not positive though.

Not to stray too much off topic, but I played a good chunk of Mafia 2 on PC. I liked it for the story and shooting mechanics. Yes the story was fairly predictable, and just rehashing several popular gangster movies, but it was still well acted and told. The gun fights felt right and IMO were worlds better than GTAs lock dead on mechanic. The things holding it back were a very linear one-mission-at-a-time style, and a fairly boring city with little to do. I shelved it because other good games came up, but I've been meaning to at least finish it.

And regarding LA Noire: Despite not being fully Rockstar developed they still seemed to have a hand in it. It won't be as open, but at least the story and solid voice acting should remain in tact. The facial animations are impressive, and they say you have to read them right to know when people are lying, but I'm a tad worried that the facial ticks will be so overexaggerated that it'll be too easy.

yeah, totally agree with Mafia II. overly cliche'd gangster world story (well, not exactly cliched, as just about every single beat was taken from the main content: Goodfellas/Casino, Sopranos, and Donny Brasco). BUT, it was very well told and orchestrated. I think one has to accept it as a "virtual movie" more than a complete sandbox game. This is certainly going to divide people that are into the GTA style "follow the story if you want to" type of play.

I think LA Noire looks fantastic, and to do what it claims to do, will likely have to be as linear as Mafia II, though hopefully more content. The fact that it seems to be investigation-directed, suggests that there will be tons of opportunity for replay and various endings. So, could be the best of both worlds.

And this is one of the reasons I plan on waiting a few months until a price drop. I don't want to pay $60 for a game I will play thru once. I think once you know the cases it will take away a lot of incentive to play it again.

true. I do remember them mentioning that while you have the main story case, there are other side cases that you can choose to work at your discretion, some of them having an effect, I think, on the main case as well as your character--maybe how you are perceived by the NPCs?

If this is all true, then having the cases (witnesses testimonies) be identical from one playthrough to the next (I honestly don't see how they couldn't be), could still change how the main case, or how other cases play out as you progress. Say you choose not to follow up on one witness for one case and focus on another, and that witness ends up dead or something, effecting your progress elsewhere.

Getting good reviews so far.

If that's the case, it might be worth getting. I have some credit at Gamestop, so I would only have to spend around $20 for it, so I think I might just go for it.

Awesome. Looks mighty promising then. The indi game store I get all my stuff from might not it on their shelves until Wednesday, which sucks. But these reviews are getting me pretty amped up. Seems like it'll provide a rather fresh experience. This looks like it could be one of those games that's also fun to just watch other people play.

Anybody know if the PS3 version will support 1080?

Wow those reviews are overwhelmingly positive. I may just have too pick this one up. I wonder how long the campaign is though. I don't want to pay $60 for a 10 hour game. If I do get it it'll probably be for PS3. It was originally going to the a PS3 exclusive so I imagine that will be the most polished version.

One of the videos I saw claimed 20 hours, but that was a dev video IIRC so they may be over guessing it. Still... it's on 3 DVDs so I'd believe it regardless of how much space the dialog and facial animations take up.

That reminds me, I'm going to have to uninstall quite a bit to make room for a 3 disc HDD install D:

Also, has anybody read/watched these reviews to see if they're full of spoilers or not? Sometimes they do a good job of reviewing without spoiling the story but other times not.

I am glad I have to 250 gb HDD for this reason. That is going to be a lot of space to install. Although, I am sure that you will just move from disk 1 to disk 2, so you could always delete the install and install the next disk when you are ready to move on.

I read through IGN's and Gamespot's reviews, and they don't give away much at all. They mostly cover the mechanics of interrogation, gameplay, and touch on a few elements from different cases, but it doesn't give any names or plot developments.

On the 2nd page of Gamespot's, they loosely touch on certain things that happen at specific parts of the game, but I skipped over that once I saw it getting into the plot.

General consensus seems to be that they both liked it, though it's not without its slight flaws. Both sites gave it a high score, so that's good enough for me to pick it up.

Ars Technica has their review up.

Side note: I've also spent some of my down time today reading about Heavy Rain. I might have to go pick that up when I get out of work.

20 hours.. bleh expect more than that for a game with NO MULTIPLAYER.. 20 hours and trade in city?

Sounds like a rental to me. If it's a good game then that's great but this and other reviews have said that there's not much reason to go back in.

The game trailers review gives it around 15-20 hours. It looks really good, but I don't know that I want to pay full price for a game that short. It'll be more of a consideration when it gets down around $45 or so.

Picked up my copy last night at midnight. Put in a couple hours, got a few trophies, solved a few cases. I'm pretty impressed with it so far.

The extremely detailed facial animations make the characters very personable, and believable. The acting is excellent as well. I'll need some more experience with interrogations, because I can't really identify any tells yet. The only way I can really tell if they're lying, telling the truth, or if I should 'doubt' them, is if I have evidence to substantiate my claim.

Fun game overall though. I really enjoy the cut scenes when questioning witnesses. The acting and animation is top notch, so the cut scenes are always entertaining. Plus, Cole is such a likeable character. I like watching him work.
