Which is part of the problem. The grasp of history and sense of entitlement that certain segments of the immigration movement has is quite disturbing.

Of course we shouldn't let violence and intimidation prevent our society from enforcing its own laws but in this situation we flat out would not have been able to. The crowd was far larger than anticipated and while this might be considered reading too much into events a likely hypothesis is that the escalation of tactics used by the police was one of desperation due to facing a larger crowd than anticipated. While I understand that I still don't think their actions were appropriate and I still don't see how they could have been expected to find and depot the illegals in the crowd.

What I don't understand is that these rallies are golden oportunities to round up tens of thousands illegals and ship them back to Mexico en mass and they just shoot rubber bullets at them.

If they actually tried to round up the people, there would be a riot and the equivalent of the Watts/Rodney King issue.
Anyone who was legal and detained would then be generating lawsuits (courtesy of those that feel that illegals can do no wrong). Racial profiling anyone?
What should they do, grab a handful, toss them in the paddy wagon, take them to the stadium and hold them until processing? Repeat cycle until streets are empty.
Remember common sense != political expediency/reality

I seem to remember Anglos claiming manifest destiny for the entire continent. Now some Hispanics embrace the same idea and you panties are in a wad.
Once again the anti-immigration movement seems to deviate from its legitimate law and order roots into hatred of Hispanics.

If we want to play the historical blame game, perhaps Hispanics should start with Spain, work their way up to Santa Ana, and then finally focus on their own corrupt and inept nations of origin, particularly Mexico. Then and only then can they bitch about Anglo-America's pursuit of Manifest Destiny...they should be happy we stopped with Texas and California, as we were very much in a position to easily conquer Mexico at one point.
If Hispanics want to embrace some notion of manifest destiny, let them...if that is truly what they seek, then what we are facing is either treason by our own citizens, a revolutionary movement or a literal invasion of our borders by what is arguably a foreign force...if that is the case, than perhaps the police response was entirely justified.
Hispanics are not the only immigrants to this country...I have no problem with immigrants...I am the grandson of immigrants, and I am certainly not Anglo...but I do have a problem with some Hispanics and their sense of entitlement.

Just because Americans do not like Hispanics crossing in to our country by the millions with blatant disregard for our laws, who leave millions of tons of garbage and human waste in their wake, commit a sundry of crimes , steal our identies, cost the American citizens hundreds of billions in government services, start making demands for rights and citizenship like they are owed it, having protests where the wave the Mexican flag and burn ours, form groups like Atzlan whose sole purpose it to take over parts of our country and turn it into a separate nation who spew hate like this and La Raza whose philosophy seems to echo a majority of the Hispanics coming here which is all for the Hispanics and nothing for anyone else or American Hispanics who mindlessly support them in this for no other reason than they have the same skin tone does not mean we hate all Hispanics.
Looks like there is an official investigation underway regarding the incident with LAPD and the protesters during the immigration march, I just hope it does not turn in to some unfounded witchhunt to appease the illegal immigrant/supporter masses.

The last count I saw said there were currently 4 official investigations of the incident in the works, the FBI has opened a civil right's inquiry into the officers conduct, the police department itself opened 1 probe to create an ?after-action report? that evaluates planning and operations, another by internal affairs to probe complaints against officers, and the city?s civilian Police Commission has opened an independent review. Basically everyone but the police union leaders have already acknowledged at least some wrongdoing.

KTLA had a report on the May Day Melee last night. Apparently, the police department shifted their best trained riot police to another location shortly before the trouble started.
Ironic that a group of masked demonstrators, seperate from the peaceful protest, showed up after the shift change...now I am not saying they were tipped off, or that this was intentional...it could all be coincidence...but past protests have shown that there are well organized elements of anarchists and trouble makers who monitor police activity, are highly organized, and seek to cause the most chaos possible.
So this new element shows up, starts causing problems, and provoking the police...the remaining officers on site, lacking both training and experience for dealing with crowd control, respond in a disproportional manner.
The one sided media coverage of this controversy is sickening...I know the LAPD is known for going over the line, but investigations are under way, and from what I have seen, I support the notion that some of the police did not respond appropriately, and should face the consequences of their actions.
But again, where is the call for accountability from the community on the element that caused all of this to begin with...you won't hear the community hold their own accountable...but what I am starting to see is the parade of lawyers and lawsuits of those looking to cash in on this.

LOS ANGELES ? Police Chief William Bratton said Sunday that up to 60 members of an elite squad that swarmed into a park and fired rubber bullets during a May Day immigration rally are no longer on the street.
The LAPD police chief has been blaming his officer?s right from the beginning instead defending his officer?s actions like a good leader. He should have waited until he had all the information surrounding the events and all investigations were concluded before condemning his police force. Now thanks to Bratton the investigations will be carried out like witch hunts, looking for scapegoats to hang instead of finding the truth. I think if there is any problem with the LAPD it is their leader.
One thing is for sure if I worked for the LAPD I would absolutely refuse to ever under any circumstances to work crowd control for any event. I would be damned if I am going to risk my job, be belittled by my boss and fine my self in law suits every time someone decides to throw rocks bottles, or otherwise threaten life and private property etc? and I dare to stop them.

funny thing is that the mayor had all kinds of sympathy words for the demostrators who got hurt, but said not a word about the cops who got put in the hospital that started the whole damn thing.
there are reports taht the protestors were throwing D cell batteries, frozen bottles of water and frozen cans of soda at the cops which sparked the whole thing.
