Yes, it takes place thousands of years before the movies, no worries about plot holes left by them.

Yes, the games don't rely on any previously established Star Wars knowledge as they both take place well before any of the movies and they pretty much explain everything you need to know, possibly better than the movies because you spend much more time with the games.

KOTOR is my second favorite game of all time, right behind Ocarina of Time :)

Man, earlier this year I bought an old console and Ocarina of Time just to see what it got the highest rating ever on pcrankings for, and it's practically unplayable.

I haven't got all that far into it, but maybe you can say something about why it's a good game to help. I can't even easily describe where I stopped playing, in a few tunnels.

N64 was known for pioneering truly 3D experiences. Mario 64 was awesome in this regard as a launch title. However Ocarina of Time is regarded as one of the first titles to really push the boundaries and show off what could be done as far as immersive 3D worlds. It got perfect rankings for what it could do THEN.

I've played it a couple times and have a current copy siting on the HD. My problem is I never have gotten much past the part where you get to the jedi training planet. Found the city stuff in the beginning much funner.

What a coincidence, I had nothing planned for this weekend and didn't feel like going out either so I reinstalled KotOR1 and played it to completion. What a great game. Played through this game 3 times before this I think and I'm still finding new dialogue.

I really like how well developed most of the characters are! I might play KotOR 2, not sure yet. I like definitely like how KotOR 2 had more gadgets/force powers/workbench/lab station, but I don't feel that the characters had as compelling a backstory compared to KotOR 1.

Shame though, because I felt the combat/UI was much better in KotOR2. If only the story/way it unfolded was as good as 1. I definitely recommend any avid RPG player to at least try it out, I feel its one of the, if not the best game of the decade as mentioned by venkman.

IMO, I thought the combat was TOO EASY in KOTORII.

Once you get Force Storm, you will EASILY rape anything in the game in just 2-3 Storms.

Yup excellent game. Too bad Obsidian took the helm of KOTORII.

Nothing wrong with Obsidian, they have talented people. I think we have Lucas Arts to thank for forcing that game out the door way before it was ready and by forcing Obsidian to cut an entire chapter from the game to ship it early.

I just installed it and playing it now. No issues with Vista 64 bit. However I am running into that weird bug where after you complete combat you can't use your forward and back to run (though mouse look still works). I'd have to quick save and quick reload to get myself moving again. Other then that, good game so far.

I was actually thinking about this game last night... is it built on the NWN engine? As someone who has played NWn1/2 extensively, does it have a similar 'feel'?

It uses a different engine. NWN = Aurora engine, KotOR = Odyssey Engine. I am sure that they share a good bit of code, being they were both developed by Bioware.

Somewhat, the UI is horrible in KotOR. NWN1 and 2 have a much better UI than KoTOR. It is a shame there were no mods to correct the UI.

Hi.
I love KOTOR too.

To the guy who was asking about mods for KOTOR 2: There are a couple of fan based and official mods to enchance the videos and music clips. There is supposedly an underground workshop where they intend to restore the missing sections of the game.
Apparently KOTOR 2 was rushed out the door so fast they just had to disable a couple of planets and quests even though most of the data for those things was ready.
If you use game editors you can see a bunch of disabled items, text strings, and even some speech and they are all on the discs and many of them even get installed with the game.
They just arent accessible when you go into the game world.

If I recall correctly there is supposed to be a robot planet or something like that.
Have been waiting patiently for many years for LucasArts to seriously fix KOTOR 2 or make a Redux version. At the very least they could make a KOTOR 3 and call it a Trilogy

Since MMO's make more money and we keep seeing games like Force Unleashed for consoles, I dont know if we will ever get a third RPG.

Man this thread brings back memories of me playing KOTOR late into the night, such an epic game. When I get home tonight I'm gonna reinstall it and give it another go ;)

Hmm. interesting.

i just wonder if my lack of interest in star wars is gonna damper the game...

Yea, KOTOR was/is a sweet game. I need to try and find a copy somewhere, since this thread and the lack of really GOOD quality games has stirred my intrest again.

Umm, ok I just started playing this game. One of my roommates has it.

I stopped playing about 15 minutes in.

How is this the best game of the decade? The movement controls suck, using the inventory is a pain in the ass. Battles feel almost turn-based and you can't move when you are fighting. And why does it pause the game when you see an enemy?

I quit playing when my guy wouldn't move. He was just standing there and I could look around, but that was it. I took that as an opportunity to exit the game and never play it again.

 You can turn the pause off. And it's based on dice rolls.

And yes, KOTOR is freaking awesome.

Anyone get this working in Vista? I'm trying to load it on my laptop, but it constantly freeze up at load screen. Once in a while it loads, and when it does, it plays fine

I had no interest in the star wars universe when I played it, but I still loved the game. In fact I developed a (temporary) taste for star wars because of it.

You are absolutely right on that. Made myself not use Force Storm ever since I used it first time through so it slipped my mind.

I only meant to say, the equipment/interaction felt better in KotOR2. Maybe its just the buffing, and some people might find that boring, but it gave an aspect of "something to do" instead of just spamming flurry (or whatever improved combat move you picked). For me anyway.

So question about the leveling process in this game. I want to hold off on it so I can save them for the Jedi levels when I get to that place. Do you stop gaining XP when you don't click level up? Or do they accumulate and you could potentially level up half dozen times when you do finally click level up?

No, you keep gaining XP. You technically don't have to level up until you become a Jedi.
