No problem Unclebud. This camera really interests me, as I learned how to take photos with a Pentax MG aperture priority camera in high school. The only thing I don't like about my DC280 is the lack of manual control and I think the DC4800 bridges some of that gap. The marriage between Digital and 35mm is still in the future, but the DC4800 offers more features than the average person will use, which opens the door to learn more.

I really liked the idea that I could control the aperture to change the depth of field, and the fact that you can control the shutter speed to actually take night photos if you want. Obviously the Nikon 990 has more features, but for the price the Kodak kicks it's @ss and it's affordable to most of us. 6 months ago I was dreaming of a 3 megapixel camera and thinking it would be out of my reach for quite some time. Now I can get on when I sell my DC280. When I finally take the plunge it will be my third Kodak digicam and I have had great luck with the first two, so I hope I am as satisfied with the DC4800 when it finally arrives at my door.

Maverick: I heard that if you have a D290 you can trade up to a DC4800 for $250 at the Kodak store. Not sure if that applies to your model as well or if they have other deals for your model.

Just thought I'd mention it so you could check if interested.

I heard battery life is poor on kodak. I am going to China in a few mths do they sell universal adapters?
I also heard that you can purchase a non kodak battery that would last longer

The Kodak trade-up deal sucks, as they only offered $200.00 for a DC280, which is exactly the same thing as the DC3400. Avg price for a 3400 is around 400 bucks, and I paid 400 for my DC280. I figure I can sell it for 300 clams and order a DC4800 for less than 100 bucks difference after the rebate.

Surprisingly, Kodak.com itself might be a decent place to get a spare battery if the Toshiba one isn't in stock.

SLY, I would invest in a decent universal adaptor and inline surge supressor (APC or Similar) This is the one I have for my Notebook, which would work well in a HOTEL room with the DC4800 AC adaptor.

Unless you know for sure that the power in China is the same as ours, I would not buy any electronic adapters there. Hopefully they aren't as stupid as America and use 220 or 230 power, not 110 like we do, which is extremely wasteful.

Here are the specs for nominal power in China.

You will need a good power convertor before you leave to convert the 240 volt back to 110. I would suggest some type of surge supressor added to that, just to be on the safe side, as I don't think Kodak's Tech Support is going to look upon you kindly. "Oh, by the way, when I took my Digicam to China, it fried the AC adaptor and the camera. Is that covered under warranty?"

Hope this helps

As far as the battery, I keep hearing that you should really get the rapid charger as it takes 4 hrs to charge with the camera but only 1 hr with the charger. Also, it is really small and portable. What I did was buy the battery + charger + tripod + CF reader from Amazon & then use one of those $20 off $100 coupons that everyone seems to be getting in their mailboxes. Here's the details:

1 "SanDisk Imagemate USB Compactflash Reader for 98/Mac SDDR-31" Electronics; @ $24.74 each
>Usually available in 24 hours
>
>1 "Tiffen Mini Photo-Video Tripod" Electronics; @ $4.88 each <--- 75% off
>Usually available in 24 hours
>
>1 "Kodak Lithium Ion Battery and Charger for DC4800" Electronics; @ $79.99 each
>Usually available in 24 hours

Now I'll have 2 batteries + quick charger. If I need more batteries I would buy the Toshiba as they seem to be identical and only cost $40. Also, if you don't have a coupon then buy.com has the battery/charger combo for $70. You may still find it cheaper if you look around but no-one seems to be finding any really good deal on it.

I hadn't realized the charger that came with the Kodak battery was 1hr, vs. 4hr on the camera - thanks!

Now if Amazon would only mail me one of those coupons...

Of course, I haven't even ordered the camera yet, but fully intend to. Just want it a wee bit cheaper.

A question about the charger, is it universal or is it only for 110v in the US?
thanks

Bump for discussion. I wonder why prices have not dropped due to compitition. Are quantities limited?

hooobi's idea is pretty good.
I think I will purchase the charger and add $20 to use the coupon.
And purchase these with click citibank platinum select.
And then use price protection to have them match onvia $65.55
which gets back about $15. All in all about $70 with a little extra
added to the charger and battery. Also a little more troublesom than
just buying it from onvia.

Until March 13th, PhotoAlley.Com is once again offering $100 off any $600 purchase. They also offer **free** shipping on $100+ orders and charge tax only in CA, UT and NJ (if I recall).

Their DC4800 is $599.95. So add something for $.05 (I briefly looked recently and the cheapest item I found was a $3 roll of film..

$ 600 - DC4800 (+ some cheap item)
-$100 - PhotoAlley discount
-$100 - Kodak Rebate
-$ 25 - 5% ebates rebate
==========================

$375 - shipped free (+ tax if applicable)

I've never dealt with PhotoAlley, but others have offered kind words in recent discussions.

Great post Ribbet, that's something lots of people will be glad to know. Are there any other deals on add ons from them?

Does PhotoAlley offer $100 off coupons like this often? My problem is that my current computer is so old that it doesn't have any USB ports, so if I bought the camera now I wouldn't have any way to use it until I build my new computer next month. On the other hand, if I wait a month to buy this camera, what are the odds I'll be able to find an equally good deal?

From what I've seen, PhotoAlley's prices are higher than their competition. Thus, they frequently offer discounts, which have recently alternated between $100 off $600, $100 off $750, and, about a week ago, 15% off any purchase (about $90 off $600).

$100 off $600 is the best PhotoAlley has offered recently for something like the $599 DC4800. Your worst case: they offer $100 off $750 when you get ready to buy a $600 item.

Good luck.

Tharpertx...

"That is a good bit over priced!"

Overpriced?

The DC4800 (a 3.x mp camera!) was $799 (list) about 1-2 months ago. Kodak then reduced the price to $599, and almost immediately offered a $100 rebate ($499).

PhotoAlley.Com seems to offer stuff at list price (no bargain). But they also offer $100-off discounts regularly, bringing their prices much closer to their competition.

$375 for a highly-rated digicam that (some) people paid $799 for 2 months ago doesn't seem overpriced. Kodak's aggressive moves suggest that either newer models are on their way, or Kodak's having trouble moving inventory.

No, Ribbet. $599 is overpriced compared to the other retailers. $375 is increadibly tempting. In fact, the only thing stopping me is the chance of a better deal! : )

Tharpertx...

"$599 is overpriced compared to the other retailers."

Of course. But, as we said, PhotoAlley **now** asks $499, not $599. And, as I said (often), "PhotoAlley.Com seems to offer stuff at list price (no bargain)". But, PhotoAlley's bi-weekly $100-off opportunities bring their prices in line. Is $500 - $100 - $25 ($375) overpriced?

And PhotoAlley, according to comments here, offers good/excellent service. Frankly, we gladly pay a little more to deal with mfgs/vendors who represent their stuff honestly and stand behind their stuff. Read **all** messages in this thread about vendors with prices that might be better (who would you deal with?).

Then find us something better. We'd all appreciate it.
