If the airlines designed the seats to recline, you have the right to recline without anyone stopping you. Yes, we have all been hit in the face by the guy in front of us reclining. All that means is that it is time for you to relax and recline too.

For the people who recline because it's their "right"...

If you had the window shade open to look at the landscape below, and the sun was coming through and hitting another passenger right in the face (you know, you can see the little rectangle of sunlight) and it's clearly bothering them, would you continue to window gaze because a window view was part of what you paid for, or would you just close the shade out of consideration for that passenger? Just curious.

They should bring a pair of sunglasses like I do.

The difference between reclining and your example is exaggeration. Reclining a few inches does not put the seat into the other person's face.

Disability or discrimination doesn't work in either case. There are a number of rows in coach that provide additional leg room(ie. First row, emergency exit row). They usually cost more but extremely fat people are forced to sometimes to purchase more than one seat.

You can't charge handicapped more to accommodate them.

Life isn't fair.

Yes, it's not fair to airlines that they can't charge handicapped more, but them's the rules

the airline staff will tell you to close the window for the consideration of other passengers. they won't tell you to stop reclining.

Would they ask the passenger to stop reclining if it was causing physical pain to the other passengers knees from the repeated attempts to ram the seat into a recline? Couldn't that be considered assault?

nope, this has never happened to me in 50+ flights in the past 7 or so years.

Why are you afraid to answer the question?

I would recline my seat unless it was clearly causing pain to the dude behind me. since he also has a right to recline his seat, i don't feel bad.

if the sun was shining right into my neighbor's face, i would close the window. he doesn't have a window, so I feel bad.

if pressing the recline button causes the seat to be 3" closer to your face, the solution is simple - recline your own goddamn seat so you move 3" away from the back of the seat in front of you.

I'm so glad I usually fly business. Helps keep me away from you riff raff kids who like to kick seats and use mirrors to reflect light upon other passengers. 😉

Love these first world problems threads. Maybe if half of you lost some weight, you wouldn't worry about the person in front of you reclining. What a country this has become.
Fat people have longer legs?

Maybe if you'd pull your head out of your ass every now and then...

Love the FWP stuff too. Oh, sorry nothing should bother people in the "first world". Getting raped by ISPs/telco/cable? FWP, sorry, take it in the ass and shut up. Traffic? FWP, keep paying tolls forever to sit in traffic going 10 mph.

Oh wait, maybe it's a lack of critical thinking that gets us to stupid places where the airlines aren't giving anyone of any size except 5'5" petite women enough space? Hmm...
