Kickstarter: Project Eternity (New RPG from Obsidian)

And another company jumps on the Kickstarter bandwagon with old school RPG awesomeness.

They have a $10,000 backer in the first 30 minutes. Already close to 100k total. Asking for 1.1million though. These games keep getting more expensive!

For those interested:

Tally: $3,504,303

Edit:

I have confirmed that they do have some flex goals prepared. Up to $5million. And one of them is linux support. As well as extended gameplay, voice overs etc.

They had me at "isometric, party-based RPG".

Backed $20. I would give more, but I've become slightly weary of Obsidian, but I am hoping they come through with this one. Maybe with no publisher in the way we'll see what they can really do.

Interesting to see the "big budget" studios using kickstarter.... I wonder if more studios will start using this model to help "lower" the cost of a game? Imagine paying $20 for Borderlands 3 with the option to pay more if you want more swag.. 🙂

Well technically speaking they may have lost money with me, since my $20 gets me a copy of the game when it comes out, unless of course that's the price they're going to be selling it at launch.

That actually wouldn't be a bad idea IMO. Cheaper games for the customer, more money for the developer/publisher, everyone's happy.

Obsidian is a small gamedev, and they got bent over in their contract with Bethesda in FO:NV.

They probably figure that Kickstarter may be a viable way to make money for themselves, similar to:

http://www.wmdportal.com/projects/cars/

Which is another crowdfunded project by a studio that has developed games for big studios before.

Very likely developers or other people that already have a large stake in the project.

Or someone random like Gabe lol.

Think about it though, if you were a millionaire and loved video games, wouldn't it be awesome to be able to contribute to a project on a personal level?

I really hope this comes together. I've been asking for this for a long long time. Hopefully if it does, the engine will be easily re-usable and modable.

I'm liking how this year is turning out for gaming news. All the AAA titles have pretty much failed and old school games are coming back.

EDIT: Thinking things through, I wonder if the kids these days have been spoiled with their mindless games for so long that stuff like this is already beyond their capacity to enjoy?

Kickstarter is really cool but I'm also hesitant. I have never really played a lot of the original games that are being remade, even though I have been gaming since 1992, so I don't really know what to expect from these remakes, which makes me hesitant to pledge any money ("Am I giving money to a game I won't like?").

Fallout 1-2-NV, Planescape: Torment, KOTOR II...

<fry> SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! </fry>

And: Must ... resist ... $1,000 pledge level.

Having a custom NPC or artifact in the game would be cool, but I really should save the cash for this November's Child's Play instead.

Well remember these are re-makes, not replicas. They won't be exactly like the originals anyway and can be enjoyed on their own merits. I never played Total Annihilation, but I know I love RTS games. An RTS game built around huge, bombastic, over-the-top tactics just blowing shit up sounds like a helluva good time to me, so I donated to Planetary Annihilation.

Likewise I never played the original Shadowrun, but I know I like turn-based tactical RPGs and like the descriptions given by the developers, so I donated to Shadowrun Returns.

A snippet:

They're targeting a spring 2014 release. The game will cost you $25 (or $20 if you're an early supporter). And it'll be PC only, because [Chris] Avellone is "tired of designing content and interactions that caters to consoles and console controllers."

They're already up to nearly $350K and day one is not even over. That tells you a good number of people have been wanting a game like this.
