I NEVER work out abs, and have a nice six pack. Pretty much any core excersise works out your abs better then silly crap like this. I can do more situps in 2 minutes then anyone in my company.

Anyways, back when I did try to work out abs, I could hold this and keep my back straight well over 2 minutes. Got bored and moved on.

We used to call that the "prayer" position in taekwondo when I was younger (since people often put the hands together in a "please-god-let-the-pain-stop" kind of way).

A good variation on that exercise is to start in the prayer position and then turn to one side so that only one forearm is on the ground, and your chest is facing to the side instead of straight down, and keep your back perfectly straight (don't let it sag downwards). This is good for your obliques as well as your abs, but make sure you do both sides.

we also do the side planks. Start in the middle for 1 minute and then roll to your right arm for one minute then to the middle for one minute then the left for one minute and back to middle for another minute to finish up. If you can do that easily, increase the time. It really helps you tone your abs.

One of my favorite ab exercises is something like toe-touches, only EXTREME :D

Start by laying on your back, arms out straight above your head but not touching the ground, both legs out straight but not touching the ground either. (you should look almost like a straight line). Now keeping your arms straight above your head and your legs locked out, bring your legs and arms up and meet in the middle of the air (essentially folding yourself in half at the waist). When you go back down, don't let either your arms or your legs touch the ground.

See how many of those you can do ;)

It's not silly. It is a plank position. It is just another exercie to incorporate in ones training schedule. It is never good to do the same exercises over and over again. every 6-8-12 weeks once your beyond the 4-6month stage of training people should switch up what they are doing.

Easily more then 34seconds...reps of 30seconds on my obliques, 30s each side 3sets, no rets, then I do what your doing for 30s on my forearms then I do it across two benches with my angles and head across the benches for 30seconds. Thats both for 3sets.

Cool exercise.

Try with one hand and one leg on the floor and your other arm and leg just held out straight :). NOW thats harder :)

You can do the dragonflags on a bench. NO ONE does these at any gym you'll go to...very hard to get a full one where you go all the way down and all the way back up...

You have more dedication then me Koing. I've found reasons to work out every part of the body except abs. Perhaps you can fill me in? Downloading the dragonflag video, but it might take a week or so :)

Do reverse dips. Get two chairs and have them face each other. Sit on one chair and have your feet on the other (heals on the tip of the chair). Grip the sides of the chair and move your body over the gap and go down and up. Really try to keep your elbows in.

You're probably working your abs and you just don't know it. Like squats if done correctly are a great ab workout.

Well if you read up higher in the thread that was the point that I tried to make. Squats/deadlifts, and I'm sure some other stuff works out my abs enough, so why do a special ab workout?

I've been doing this ab exercise for about a year now. Was introduced to it in a bootcamp fitness camp. It's a great alternative to crunches and abs.

Try this: after a couple of sessions lift one foot in the air about 6-12 inches. Switch feet after about 30 seconds.

Or alternate lifting your elbows and rotating your lifted shoulder up and back.

From the sound of it because he doesn't go to a gym or want to start a full work out routine yet? Just doing these types of exercises will at least give him a base to work off of and some confidence.

I just gave up after one minute. My abs didn't hurt, but my forearms were getting tired holding the weight. I could do more than 3 or 4 minutes if I was distracted with a TV or some music. This isn't that difficult.

Plus having visible abs is 90+% diet anyway, although having a strong core is always a good thing, even if you don't have any definition there ;)

Yeah, I've seen several "ripped" guys who claim to never work abs. Now if I can only get my arms wider :(

This is a tough ab workout that doesn't require any extra equipment. I can hold it for 34 seconds before they start burning too much. Post your times!

I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I held myself up using my forearms for 1 minute. I didn't feel anything in my abs. My forearms feel weak, though.

Keep your body straight like plank and support yourself only on toes and forearms (elbows would probably be acceptable).

I get 2 minutes, probably could extend that to 2:10 but it was too painful.
