Wow. You obviously haven't paid even the slightest bit of attention to the elections this year if you think Edwards is a "free-loader". His parents were mill workers, you idiot.

He will never gain support appeal from the "average working people" based on his employment for the simple fact that he is a multi millionare and does not represent the general public because of his success, he is better focusing on the fact that his parents were "common" and putting little weight into his financial success.

Senator Kerry and his staff should be commended for the cleverly designed strategy surrounding the choice for VP. Just look at all of the "free" publicity and interest generated by this stunt. An absolutely brilliant maneuver, and likely studied by PR and communications people for years to come.

And Edwards? In my opinion, he'll be a competent and capable VP if elected. He'll do just fine.

Even if I had read and heard every single thing George W. Bush had said, and agreed with it all, I would gladly, upon seeing www.georgewbush.com, and Bush's total inability to change his wretched facial expression, climb my roof and let my joy out in a scream that would last an entire night if so Kerry had chosen Willy the Walrus.
'Course, I haven't got much to do with this election :)

Please Winston, your intent was obvious and rather stupid, the phrase pot kettle comes to mind as I am sure you are one of the first who jumps in off the bat when something pro conservative/republican is posted...common sense says that one should just accept the fact that alternative statements/opinions will be posted and not make a big deal out of it as you attempted to do. Word of advice, grow up and share something constructive instead of just stating the obvious.

This guy is going to be eaten alive. Six years of political experience - he is sure to crack.

Hey, what was the current President's political experience again (pre 2000 that is)?

I think a total Of 6 years in elected Office. I could be wrong though. He Won Texas on his Name......

Interesting "instant analysis":
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A30573-2004Jul6.html

Arlington, Va.: Will the instant GOP reaction that McCain was Kerry's first choice have any impact? Won't McCain be annoyed by being used in this way against his friend??

Robert G. Kaiser : I suspect Kerry scored some points with his McCain flirtation which no comments today can dent. He showed himself to be open to Republicans and to bipartisan government, a theme I think we'll hear more about in the months ahead. McCain as a salesman for Bush will have a rough time gaining credibility, I think. It's no secret how the two feel about each other.

Harrisburg, Pa.: Is it common for a presidential nominee to pick a VP that he attacked so vigorously in the primary? Kerry routinely criticized Edwards for his lack of experience in politics, foreign policy, etc. Is this something that will come back to haunt them?

Robert G. Kaiser : Reagan did it with George H.W. Bush, with no bad consequences. JFK did it with LBJ. I'm sure there are other examples I'm not instantly recalling. I'd say it's no big deal.

New Haven, Conn.: Kerry consistently said he was looking for a running mate that could take over as president if need be. He has also been stressing his military backround as a proxy for foreign policy experience. It seemed that he would pick a more experienced candidate but Edwards seems experinced at almost nothing politically. Is this choice more a lack of what Kerry actually wanted or is it more a PR ploy as Edwards seems the media's pretty-boy choice?

Robert G. Kaiser : Can't read Kerry's mind, but it will be interesting to see how he answers this question, which will undoubtedly be put to him today, and in the days ahead.

My hunch is this: Edwards is an unusual politician. He has an emotional impact on people. He has the gift of empathy that Clinton had too, and used so well. Whether this is all phony I leave to you to decide, but our reporting has shown how real it feels to some voters. People really respond to the guy--some people.

My hunch is Kerry is hoping that there's a little Edwards Magic out there that will help mitigate his own aloof personality. Is that a workable formula? I'm cold, but my running mate is really warm? I don't know.

MSNBC is reporting this as well, which I guess is where the Today Show got it (since they share the NBC connection).

ABC News is also reporting it, using an AP feed.

Assuming this is true (and I think it's premature to do that), I find it funny that the NY Post has reported that Kerry chose Gephardt. They actually ran this as their cover story as well.

yeah, the lawyer background hopefully will hurt them big, just wondering what skeletons he is hiding back there.

Oh, you mean playing off emotional pity to make doctors and hospitals pay millions of dollars to parents who were the victims of bad luck, NOT MALPRACTICE, thus helping cause the skyrocketing of the cost of healthcare to average americans?

Sure, of course that's a good thing.

Thank God. That thread about it being Gephardt had me upset. I now feel a lot better about voting for Kerry again.

How about getting money for a little girl who had her intestines sucked out by an improperly designed pool filter.

I have yet to read about any of his cases that seemed to be undeserving.

My dad is an OB-Gyn, who knows people sued by Edwards, but he's still a supporter.

There are plenty of dirty ambulance chasing trial lawyers around; Edwards isn't one of them.

Now, now....you don't expect people here to actually learn something about a given candidate now do you? Generalizations based on their profession or home state are more than enough to make an informed choice at the polls.

You've never read the post, have you? The New York Times could have a scanal of the Jayson Blair magnitude once a week for a year and still be of higher quality than the post.

I think this will be the most common jab at Edwards (heck, that's what Kerry used as ammunition in the primaries).

Fortunately, unlike his opponent, Kerry doesn't need hand holding by a more experienced politician to figure out how to run the country. :p

In all honesty, I'd be happy about a trained duck as a VP running mate, as long as it could deliver a few key swing states. This choice at the very least puts Kerry/Edwards in play in South Carolina, and by many reports, Edwards has excellent rapport with voters in other Southern states. Good counterbalance to a liberal from the Northeast.

Hands down Kerry appeals to moderates and right wingers. That is why this is a no brainer.

It was obvious, and intended mostly as a joke. Are you SURE I am anti conservative? Do you know what my long voting record is? Do you understand that people who have many significant conservative values may be upset with this war and this president?

Well meet such a person. I do not call myself a conservative or liberal. Many of the old liberal ideals were unworkable, and many of the New Conservatives are concerned with promoting this war and lining their pockets, and screw the country at large.

No, I will do as I have always done. I have defended the military, I supported Bush with my vote and approved of his actions up to and including Afghanistan. I believe in freedom of religion. I believe in second amendment rights.

I judge the leadership of this country by it's actions, not it's stated political philosphy.

For the first time EVER, I am voting for a Democratic candidate for President. What happens if I get my way and Kerry screws up? I am going to give him exactly what he deserves, a good flaming.

Common sense says that ANY POV is going to get hammered. That does not mean I am not going poke and prod.

First of all, a  for Edwards. Nice choice. It's who I voted for in the primaries. Same day he withdrew, damn it all. ;)

Anyway, it's interesting to note the Dick & Bush re-election cabal wasted no time in slamming Edwards as a "second choice" VP and also attacking it as a "flip flop" (as usual).

When John Kerry?s first choice for a running mate turned him down, he turned to the polls.

Who cares? The polls (AKA "The People") obviously decide this contest. Why not turn to them?

After stating that he needed a vice president who could step in as President, John Kerry chose the one man he called too inexperienced to be President just months ago.

Again who cares? The only time Edwards will "step in" as President is if Kerry is assassinated or something. What are the chances?

John Kerry?s selection of John Edwards is a flip flop on the most important decision a candidate for the presidency makes in the course of his campaign.

Is that ALL they got? Flip flop, flip flop. Like a bunch of freaking parrots over there. Do we really need to revisit Bush's 2000 campaign promises vs presidency deliverables?

A candidate?s selection of a Vice President is a sign of how he will lead. In John Kerry?s case we know he?ll settle for number two; that he will turn to the polls; and that he will make the most politically expedient choice.

Translation: We got nothing on Edwards. We're just going to babble incoherently and hope something sticks. Oh yeah, they're running scared, right Cad?

Kerry appeals to liberal nutbags, he is hoping that Edwards will appeal to moderates and unhappy right wingers....if Kerry wasn't a sen from mASSachusetts then I might have more respect for him, but the simple fact that he is cronies with Ted the drunk Kennedy makes me abhor him.
