For context, I've read articles out of the US recently where evangelical GOP politicians have made statements like, not verbatim but exact sentiment : 'Climate change, even if real, is not a big deal because god will take care of it' or 'This part of the city has a violent crime problem, let's send in 'prayer groups' to pray away the problem on the street corners of these neighbourhoods.'
This is madness, plain and simple. That people actually think this way and expect these results will be delivered is dangerous, particularly elected officials making these claims. Take Trump, overwhelmingly supported by US evangelical fanatics, and how he is now pandering to their dogma and lighting a fire under their fanaticism. Using a narrative of conflict between their belief system and the threat of terrorism, the underlying dog whistle being Islam. This is creating the narrative of holy war, exactly what the jihadists are obsessed with. Trump is the antithesis of what the whole Christ message proselytizes as to how you should conduct yourself, yet evangelicals are on board with bells on. This example shows that this group's irrationality goes so far, even to the point they are not in tune to their own dogma. Conversely the Pope has as much as condemned many of Trump's actions openly with statements he has made, stopping short of using his name. To me this lack of clarity in the evangelicals represents rising fanaticism in the US, driven by evangelicals, stoked by Trump.
Consider Trump walks out one day and says he has nuked some nation, or that he is going to war against one place or another. He claims to have received this ordinance from divine inspiration. Bush came dangerously close to doing this openly with his invasion of Iraq, at this point I'd said the pump is primed for this to be done outright. These fanatics are already there, ready and willing to support the claim. They may not even believe it, but their hate and zealotry already has them ready to go down that road so long as it's the browns and their brown religion. Sound inconceivable? Maybe, but if your eyes are open and looking at how far things have degenerated under Trump in the US, it's plausible. Without some degree of public support, he would be impotent to act most likely.
Right now with a mentally unstable and detached from reality POTUS, as far as religious zealotry goes, the evangelicals backing Trump blindly - are potentially going to be complicit in more heinous war crimes than the Iraq war and their zealotry is dangerous. It has been only been about six months, I see him wanting a war to add to whatever perverted legacy of greatness he's deluded himself will be in the history books after he checks out. The man is 71 and morbidly obese, he's due for an MI. I believe all this is to him is a way to gain infamy, as he is as the point in life where he knows he'll most likely be dead within a decade, probably sooner given his age, obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise. I'd add stress of his current job, but it's hard to determine if he actually does anything or gives enough of a shit to be stressed over his responsibilities, it appears he mostly just shirks them and could care less.
