Come on people, stop demonizing "Kenny Boy" Lay! He wasn't the ruthless corporate sh!thead who fiscally raped and pillaged every investor and employee of Enron. He didn't screw every citizen of California! No, noooooo. He's a man of God, in fact, he's like Jesus. Just misunderstood. Or something.

Ken Lay's memorial attracts power elite

HOUSTON (Reuters) -- Houston's political and business leaders, including former President George H.W. Bush, turned out for Kenneth Lay's memorial service Wednesday, less than a week after the Enron founder's sudden death.

Friends and family lauded as a devout Christian and family leader the man who built Enron into an international energy powerhouse before its collapse in the biggest corporate scandal of its time.

Lay's stepson David Herrold told the nearly full First United Methodist Church that Lay was wrongly convicted, and he was angry about the portrayals of his stepfather in the media.

"He did have a strong faith in God and I know he's in heaven, and I'm glad he's not in a position anymore to be whipped by his enemy," Herrold said.

Lay, who was 64, died while vacationing in Colorado on July 5, just six weeks after a jury convicted him and former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling of conspiracy and fraud in the 2001 collapse of the energy company.

Lay was found guilty of 10 counts of conspiracy, fraud and misusing personal bank loans on May 25 and was facing decades in prison at his sentencing, which was scheduled for Oct. 23.

Lay was a longtime friend of the Bushes, contributing to their political campaigns and was nicknamed "Kenny Boy" by President George W. Bush.

The former president and his wife Barbara entered and exited the church by a rear exit and did not speak to the media.

Among the other luminaries at the service were former Secretary of State James Baker, former Secretary of Commerce Robert Mosbacher Sr., several corporate heads such as Reliant Energy Inc.'s Joel Staff, and baseball team owner Drayton McLane.

The ceremony started slightly late after former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier collapsed in the aisle as he entered the church. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, and an announcement made later in the ceremony said he was in stable condition.

Lay was cremated in Colorado, where a memorial service was held for him on Sunday. Skilling attended that service but was not seen at the Houston memorial.

One former Enron employee wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with Enron's crooked "E" logo came by the First Methodist Church of Houston but did not attend the service. She said she came out of respect for Lay.

"He was a good person who did a bad thing. Justice was served by finding him guilty," said Marie Watkins, a former tax analyst who worked with Lay at Enron and Florida Gas for 27 years. She said she lost 90 percent of her retirement portfolio when the company imploded.

The Reverend Dr. Bill Lawson compared Lay with civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus Christ, and said his name would eventually be cleared.

"He was taken out of the world right at the right time," he said. "History has a way of vindicating people who have been wronged."

Quotes from Ken Lay's memorial service

"(Like Jesus Christ) he was crucified by a government that mistreated him," said Reverend Dr. William Lawson.

HOUSTON (Reuters) -- Family and friends of Ken Lay gathered at a memorial service on Wednesday to eulogize the Enron Corp. founder and former chairman, who died last week.

The following are excerpts from the tributes.

David Herrold, Lay's stepson: "I am angry because of the way that he was treated in the last five years of his life ... and I'm feeling a lot of joy ... He had a lot of loving friends ... He did have a strong faith in God, and I know he's in heaven. And I'm glad he's not in a position any more to be whipped by his enemy."

Reverend Dr. William Lawson: "He reached out to touch many people from many backgrounds ... many economic levels ... that included minorities like me."

"Ken Lay was neither black nor poor, but I'm angry because Ken Lay was a victim of a lynching."

"The folks who don't like him have had their say. I'd like to have mine ... (Like Jesus Christ) he was crucified by a government that mistreated him."

Ray Phillips, Lay's brother-in-law: "I cried when he was falsely convicted. One thing I know is he was innocent. Ken always took the high road and looked for the best in everyone."

"My entire family suffered a severe financial loss. Not one of us blamed Ken because we know he did everything he could to keep it from happening."

Mick Seidl, longtime friend: "Overzealous federal prosecutors have vilified an exceedingly good man ... They did so without visible efforts to seek the truth, and the media piled on. It was total character assassination ... I do know Ken would never intentionally do anything illegal."

Reverend Steve Wende, pastor at First Methodist Church of Houston which Lay attended: Lay was "in many ways a great hero to me."

"At the height of his power and position ... he used the position to lift others up."

Oh man, that makes me want to vomit. However, I can certainly picture him as a sort of hero to the rich Republican type people who do not care about those of us who don't happen to be millionaires.

Everyone knows he was demonized by the jealous liberal establishment and was actually one of the greatest men to walk the planet (only second behind GWB, in fact)

"Former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier collapsed as he arrived at a memorial service for Enron Corp. founder Kenneth Lay on Wednesday and was in stable condition at a hospital later in the day."

"He and Lay were two of Houston's biggest powerbrokers in the 1990s. Lanier pushed hard for legislation that allowed the construction of three new sports stadiums, including the Houston Astros ballpark, which was named Enron Field until the company's collapse in 2001.

Lanier testified as a character witness when Lay was being tried on fraud and conspiracy charges; the executive was convicted May 25 and was awaiting sentencing when he died of heart disease last week in Aspen, Colo.

"I thought Ken was visionary for Enron, visionary for the city," Lanier said on the stand."

I think perhaps the most revealing thing Dubya has ever said was during the last time he was on Larry King live when Larry asked him about his reaction to the news of Ken Lay's death. Without even pausing, Bush launched into this whole thing about what a great guy Ken Lay was, and how it was terrible that he died and everything. And while Bush didn't ignore the evil crap Lay did, he brushed it off as some sort of big misunderstanding. The fact that, for some reason, a lot of the people at the top don't seem to consider crimes of the wealthy to be crimes at all has to got be the biggest failing of this country.

I though King George was supposed to be Jesus. I guess they're going to have to fight for the title.

Any chance of a link to that?

If there truly was a God Reverend Dr. Bill Lawson would have been struck down for his shocking blasphemy in comparing Lay to Jesus. :p

WTF is wrong with people? Lay robbed shareholders and investors are surely as if he had robbed them with a gun... the latter action would have
paled in profitability compared to the former and the consequences, legally and socially, would be far worse.

Those people in that church would probably look down their noses with disdain on a man who holds up and robs a store for $100
but sit in godly praise of a man who robbed billions from millions of average people through lies.

Insane and disgusting but a perfectly accurate example of American society's sick worship of wealth.

While Ken Lay is certainly not a good guy, and certainlly not Jesus, he goes get way to much of the blaim for what happened to Enron. Questionable accounting and such is nothing new by any means, the problem was of course that Enrons buisness was failing, and no amount of playing with the numbers could help them. The collapse of Enron wasn't due to the accounting practices, the accounting was done to try to conceal the collapsing company. It just happened that it failed so fantastically and so many people were hurt by it that someone HAD to be scapegoated. Ken Lay of course is the natural target, and while what he did was morally wrong, and illegal I think it sould also be noted that it was not entirely uncommon.

In conclusion, Ken Lay is a bad guy, but hes not some villian like he is made out to be in the press etc...

If commonality is an extenuating factor, it should also be noted then that theft of that magnitude is far less common than murder.

This is exactly the kind of bullshit we need a lot less of in this country. It doesn't matter if "everyone does it", it's still wildly illegal and very immoral...and it's certainly theft, as investors lost a lot of money because Ken Lay lied about the state of the company. Yeah, it's not his fault the company ran into the ground, but it's damn sure his fault that he took as many people down with the company as possible just to try and save his own ass.

Ken Lay is a selfish, evil bastard who thinks he's better than everyone else, and Bush considers him a good friend.

...and who is surprised by this, exactly?

Matthew 19:24:
And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

I'm pretty sure that Ken Lay is exactly the type of man Jesus was talking about there.

Before anyone gets their panties in a wringer about this post, NOTE THE < sarcasm > TAGS!

< sarcasm >

If this bozo preacher thinks Kenneth Lay is anything like Jesus, it really is time to send out for more nails and a couple of large pieces of timber.

< /sarcasm >

Cliffs:

If you know me, you know I don't have any particular affection for any religion, but I don't intentionally disrespect anyone's right to believe as they wish. It's not going to stop me from posting an occasional sarcastic remark to make a point. If that's what you read in the above statement, get a new view, and get over it.

Ken Lay was a convicted thief and a con man who was responsible for inflicting immense economic hardship and emotional suffering on thousands of Enron's employees and millions of their customers for electric power in all markets "served" by Enron. If you want to assume there is a Hell, it's a good bet there's a place for Ken Lay, there. :|

Not continuously, but it is appropriate when people absurdly try to make the crook out to be some sort of messiah.

Hell! From the majority of your posts, I'd guess you envy anyone that can be as evil as Kenny Boy, or even the Bushwhacko in Chief, himself. Are you volunteering to be the substitute piñata?
