That's $15 for a six pound bag or $2.50/lb. I usually get it for $1.99 or less if I watch for sales.

This is the current ad for a place called Ruler Foods which is a second line brand of Krogers. Same stuff in no-frills stores for lower prices. I have a few other stores with similar prices.

$7.49 here for 80/20 in a 1 lb package too, at Safeway. $6.79 at Fred Meyer. Looks like a 3lb pack is on sale for $14.97 though.
I guess I'm out of touch, been shopping at Costco and Winco pretty exclusively for the past couple of years. At the pandemic peak, Costco 5lb pack never got to $30. It's bounces between $25 and 26$ bucks now. Been buying 30 0z (yea, no longer a full quart) of Kraft Olive oil mayo for over a year @ under $5.00 at Winco. Egglands 18ct. for under $5 for over a year at Winco.

'Bout that too for bulk, so I guess you can freeze and eat shittier meat later. We all do definitely remember 99c/lb ground beef though right? And I'm sure everyone's salaries have increased 7-fold to keep up, right?
$1? Uh, been quite a very long while since I remember it even going on sale for that cheap, I don't really buy ground beef anymore, but I do remember waiting for it to be on sale for $2/lb in 2015-2019. Regular price was generally like $4-6 at that point IIRC.

I'd expect that, costco is a bulk outlet. Tops is our middle-road, not as bad as walmart and not as pricey as Wegmans.
My Wegmans is cheaper than that even for 90/10%. They have the organic grass fed 93% stuff even for not much more than that if you buy 3 pounds for $25.

All of those prices you quoted sound like rip offs and I shop Wegmans and Whole Foods in what I thought was one of the most expensive areas in the country …

I've posted several times in the last year or so about that. I've done line by line comparisons to receipts from grocery stores recent to several years ago, maybe ten years or so, I forget now. I've shown in detail that there are no significant price increases on the items I've bought.

Are some prices up at some stores? Yes. The CEO of Kroger recently admitted they raised prices far beyond what their cost increases were. Without them even making that statement, I know Kroger is overpriced and I don't shop there.

I've stated egg prices are up, and the reason for it ... bird flu wiping out flocks.

What prices are up, have nothing to do with where people want to place the blame.

We have Safeway grocery stores here that I avoid like it's plague infested for the same reason. What with their deep pockets and all, they're blatantly overpricing itself over the other stores in the area, as if to challenge them to do the same. I suspect most folks go there for the convenience of how close Safeway stores are to their homes.

Lucky for me in some ways because I mostly shop at military commissaries for groceries, although I can clearly see how inflation has affected prices there too.

It took me about 2 shopping trips at Winco to decide that yea, selection sucks ass, but everything is literally at least 10% to 30% cheaper than shopping at Safeway. I WAS a lifetime loyal Safeway shopper.

Same here, although the crowds is a downer. Playing bumper carts with impatient rudies is no fun. Stretch those greenbacks as much as possible whenever as possible is the name of the game though. My wifey knows what's going on with all of the nearby grocery stores and instinctively knows when to shop, what to shop for and where to shop for groceries when compared with commissary pricing. Uncanny how at our age, she can still play the game well.

I'm more meaning in the early aughts, I remember that was a usual sale price for several years (mainly cuz I sold it). Again, I expect prices to go up, but wages have clearly not kept pace.

I'm not sure ground beef is a great barometer overall, because of imports, exports, and overall industry changes. Given the associated climate footprint, reducing beef consumption overall is probably a net win for the planet and things living on it anyway... I do love beef though.

Mine was that price in Middlesex MA. Beef has come down, last week market near me had 80/20 & 85/15 for $3.50 (might have been $3.25). They sold out instantly.
Currently I am around $6 per pound. Last year I was in the $7 range.
I am wrong current regular price is $4.49 per pound.

80% 10lb chubs are usually 3.89 a lb at Costco business in Detroit.

If you get lucky and it’s marked down because the date is close it can be $2 a lb.

We also get 40lb cases of boneless skinless chicken thighs for 1.99 a pound.

Break them down and freeze it.

So I guess I'm just seeing things when mayo is $6/jar, ground beef is $7.50/lb, chicken breasts are $12.50/lb, iceberg 'crunchy water' lettuce is $3 a head, and freaking blueberries are like $1/oz? All in my head yeah?

Umm I generally get chicken breasts on sale for $2.99/lb.. sometimes $1.99.

Mayo is $6 usual but $4 on sale.

Ground Beef.. generally $3.49/lb on sale. Sometimes cheaper..

You sure you're not buying in a overpriced store because a few stores have raised their prices and I shopped around.

I like Olive Oil for cooking and used to get Filippo Berrio at $19.99 for a 3 liter can. Now it's $46 but can be gotten on sale at $26.99 sometimes (yes you heard that right.. almost 40% off).

The thing that most pisses me off.. air in tires.. used to be a dollar.. now its $3.. I still haven't found a cheaper place.. maybe I need to buy an auto inflator so it's cheaper in the long run!

I pay under $6 per pound for frozen at Costco.
Just checked the Kroger app in TX. The pricing is wild
  • 1lb Tube 93/7 Kroger GR beef - $6.99
  • 1lb Regular package 93/7 Kroger GR beef - $7.79 (12% more why?)
  • 1lb Tube of 80/20 Kroger Gr beef - $3.49 (regular $4.99)
  • 1lb Tube of 73/27 Kroger Gr beef - $4.49
  • 1lb Regular package 80/20 Private Selection Angus Gr Chuck $6.29
That $3.49 is a good deal this week. 12% extra for a change in packaging is a ripoff.

I really don't know how Ithaca is, but would you save money shopping at Whole Foods Paycheck? :p

Chicken is the affordable protein for most Americans. Beef prices are clearly up vs. 10, or even 5 years ago.

Sadly I started buying soft drinks again about 3 years ago, but only when it's on sale. At the time, four Coca Cola 12 packs were $14 (might have been even less, don't remember). In 2024, even after CPI has cooled down significantly, four packs are $16. That's not a whole lot, but it's up 14% over about three years.

Yes, there are ways of saving money depending on how frugal you want to be. But the vast majority of Americans are spending more on groceries than they were 4-5 years ago. One guy's anecdotes about his receipts are simply not representative of reality (inflation).

Some segments pushed pricing much harder than others. Soda, chips, and cereal seem to be about the worst. All segments where there a few dominate companies with massive pricing power. We now hardly ever buy any of those products because I just can’t bring myself to pay that much. Anything we do get is only on a great sale.

My dad has a sweet tooth so he has to have his Pepsi but I save up for a sale.

Otherwise it's $3.34 for one and 5c deposit.

Used to be 5 for $5 before and I can still get it $1.25 each on sale sometimes.. when it happens I stock up for him!

Trying to get him off it though.

BTW the generic soda at Walmart (Big Sam's Cola) is only $1 but the taste is way different.. leaves a lot to be desired but if you just mix it with bourbon like I do.. it works!

Also I scoffed at paying the Costco membership fee but seeing your reviews.. maybe there is something to it and shopping there?

Those deals are at the Costco business center, so a bit different from the normal warehouse. More items are oriented towards food service for instance. Hence the 10lb chubs and poultry by 40 lb cases. Also has a far larger drink selection than a normal Costco. It’s all the same membership though so just go to where they have what you need.

We occasionally buy Aldi’s cola, it’s $.99 for a two liter it’s kind of between Coke and Pepsi in terms of taste and sweetness if that makes sense.

Since the pandemic we probably do 80% of our shopping at Aldi and Costco. Anything else is is ruthlessly shopping sales at Kroger and Meijer or local farm stand stuff.

Trump is trying to win over Mormons - by selling them LDS-themed coffee mugs and beer can holders.

It’s not like “try to appeal to religious people with tactics explicitly against their religion” is a new strategy for Republicans.

Yeah I'm a bit surprised he's not trying to woo Hindu voters against Kamala with prime rib if they attend his rally!

And where are those Taco bowls now for the latinos that he's conquered?

Here’s a surefire way that you can tell a campaign is going well - they’re doing a “liquidation sale” and selling all their merch for 47 cents apiece.

Just for shits and giggles I went to that site, expecting to see merch that was overpriced even at .47, but it’s way more griftier than that.

This is a store that sells monthly memberships, members get 60% lower prices (non-member prices are highly inflated) and you have to be a member to access the sales. Be prepared to have $20 a month billed to your credit card for forever, because I bet it’s almost impossible to cancel.

And the sale items are still overpriced at .47.

Looks like the best I can do locally is Trader Joe's 80/20 for $4.49. Too fatty for most of our uses though which is why we get Costco 91/9 at $5.88/lb.

I can promise you Tops is not considered an overpriced store. It's just a grocery chain, like many. Mostly cheap junk, some overpriced organic stuff, and decent enough stuff on the edge of the store if you can manage to cook without burning a pot of water.
