Drove around my town with my friend's new airport card in his powerbook. Found a few open networks that we connected to. Even Chalked a little. It was a fun evening.

What kind of neighborhoods? I wasn't able to find any in suburban areas but in the city I found 3 without an external antenna.

I don't see how people are running these setups; my 802.11b network isn't even accessable at my mailbox, let alone out in the street.

Wow! I wonder if the Airport has a wider range than my D-Link that I used with my Powerbook, I think I'll take my iBook for a drive :)

Damn that's 23 more than I've found around here. I swear, I'm the only one with wireless around here.

You guys are lucky to own a laptop. I can't wait to get one. People ask me why I want to wardrive. I've never done it before, duh! I'm sure once I've tried it I won't want to do it again. It's just one of those have to try once things.

It's perfectly LEGAL.

Yep. But parking your car in my driveway is not. I'm armed.

Who said people park their cars in people's driveways? I'm sure you can hit the signal from street parking. My friends have found open networks while driving at like 5 mph.

Did you use an external antenna or just the PCMCIA WiFi card in the laptop?

I went wardriving last night and found several networks using just the minipci card (Orinoco) built into my laptop.

DISCLAIMER: Any reference below is intended for perfectly legal reasons of course to networks you are permitted free, open and unrestricted access.

Anyone know if there are wardriving tools for PPC 2k2 or 2k3?

I went wardriving where I live (in the middle of nowhere) and found 6 open access points! I was stunned!

Just for the hell of it, I did a scan for access points on my e740 (One of the Toshiba PDA models with built-in WiFi) while I was taking a cab ride in NYC. I found at least 2 or 3 access points on every block, and most of them weren't secured.

It just goes to show how many people bother to read the instruction manuals on their wireless routers when they set them up.

Be careful with that...the range of the card influences that a lot.

I am by no means a hacker but I do run a wireless network. I changed the channel to 6, enabled 128 bit encryption and don't broadcast the name. How at risk am I? I don't know how deep we can get into all this on the forums but how "easy" is it to get past the encryption, find the network and get on it.
