Short version: If you are broadcasting a radio signal, it can be intercepted and decoded.

128 bit encryption can be cracked in a couple of hours...long enough to prevent most people from trying.

I use an 8 dbi external antenna on my Orinoco Wifi card, so my range is about 5x that of a regular card. When I wardrive, I find the network, get the GPS location, then post it to a wardrive website I belong to. Downtown in most major cities produces nice results...many corporate jackasses think they're cool by plugging an access point into their LAN, and graciously opening up their internal network and yummy T1 lines for browsing :) One network we got on we could see the shared folders and printers of anyone in the office...we printed a picture of a fat girl's ass on all their printers :D Then we posted a nice note in a document's folder explaining why wireless networks are dangerous. I'm a nice wardriver----others I know are not so nice.

We have a powerbook with an airport card, so the signal isnt the best. My friend is pricing antennas for it right now. It's interesting to see where the open spots are in my town. We went out again tonight and found another 31 networks, about a third had WEP on. It's surprising how many networks there are with the SSID = linksys and no WEP. I was even able to log into some people's routers.

Side note: Anyone have a good way to leave a person a message or find thier email address or something? I want to be able to send someone who's network I use a message. I cant use shares that are password protected, so that doesnt usually work.

Basically,
1) get netstumbler or macstumbler. There are other better programs, but these work.
2) get in your car
3) start the stumbler program
4) drive around until you see a network pop up in the stumbler application
5a) If it's an non-WEPped network, you may be online already using a DHCP address
5b) If it's a WEPped network, either crack thier WEP, or move along.

I usually see if they have any shared folders available. I then leave a text doc there. I don't see too many shared folders I can get into though.

Yea, I was thinking that, but as we have a Mac, it's not exactly possible to do that.

i thought 6 was the default channel?

you also need to disable the ssid broadcasting.

In my apartment comples, I don't even have to drive. I think my neighbors have a wiereless networrk, cause I can connect to their network just fine. Silly geese don't feel like using WEP. :p

Not to be offensive, but if you need a how-to for something like this, perhaps you shouldn't be doing it?

Yea, you need a wireless netword card. Linksys, Netgear and SMC are supposed to be good, cheap ones. Orinoco and Cisco are good also, but more expensive.
