I don't know how deep we can get into all this on the forums but how "easy" is it to get past the encryption, find the network and get on it.

Short version: If you are broadcasting a radio signal, it can be intercepted and decoded.

128 bit encryption can be cracked in a couple of hours...long enough to prevent most people from trying.
That's a couple of hours with the wireless network going full bore. If it's light to no traffic, you can forget about it, you'll never collect enough packet for 128bit.

Yep. And if you're running D-Link's 802.11b stuff that has 256bit encryption it takes even longer. Gotta love D-Link. :D

A guy in our office said he cracked a 256 bit protected network from his desk in 12 days....just wanted to see how long it would take :D So yeah, 256 is pretty secure. I guess there's a new method though that's a lot faster. Dunno.

It is best with more than one person and you alcohol of choice. Hacking sober is like masturbation. It's fun, but not great.

Try reading over at netstumbler.com forums.

But first read the FAQ and remember no asking about breaking into networks unless you like to get smacked down.

I sometimes go wardriving with my friend. I bring along my iPAQ 5455, and he brings his Dell with an Orinoco Gold card with an antenna. He definitely picks up more AP's than me, although I pick up my fair share. We can be driving at 30 mph, and still be able to pick them up long enough to map it. Just for clarification, if the network is not secured in any way, it is open domain for anyone to use (for now). Once you try to circumvent security (cracking WEP), it becomes illegal).
