I've never heard of this game before, but after hearing all the hype from AT. I decided to give it a try... and i'm glad I did! It's such a great game, very well thought out with a realistic enviroment.

Just finished the first mission with the Statue of Liberty, but died a few times from mobs or those damn robocop machines :frown:.
 
the first two levels are actually the most boring and mundane outta the whole game. the rest is many times better 🙂

that game was pretty damn awesome. epic and fun gameplay. one of the only two games that I went through more than twice.
 
I'll take mediocre graphics and excellent gameplay over excellent graphics and mediocre gameplay any day. I find myself picking up old games that I've never played that had good reviews a LOT these days. And you know what? I don't even notice that there are no "soft shadows" or "HDR bloom" or etc...
 
This is still the best FPS game ever made in my opinion. I must have played through it over 10 times and I never tire of it. And playing around with the multitude of hilarious, unintentional glitches is almost like a game in itself. 😀 It's a real shame that they totally screwed up the sequel. 🙁

Get the GEP gun at the beginning, as you can find the crossbow and sniper rifle in that same map while you won't get another GEP gun until much later (the airfield). You can not only use it to destroy bots but also to blow up a lot of locked doors and cabinets.

By the way, get the custom OpenGL driver for this and run it with that if you aren't already. It runs far better that way.
 
The GEP gun cant be accessed until much later in the game, while the rifle and crossbow are both available on the first level.
The rifle can be picked up from the Terroist on the other side of the combat bot, in the wide alley next to the Liberty Building.
The Crossbow can be found on the first or second guy you whack.

As many times as I've played the game, I like to challenge myself on new runs.
One time I'll play without the rifle. Another time I went without picking up a GEP, just the LAWS that you find laying around, (and you can only carry one of them).
Its fun and makes you plan even more than normal.

If the OP is having trouble I recommend he check out Dentons Databank. Dont remember where it is, just Google it.

At some point, Paul Denton will tell you to exit his apartment through his bedroom window. DONT!
Exit the building through the front door. This pays off later.

In reference to the original comment: Yes, its an amazing game. Theres a reason why it routinely wins Best RPG and Best Game awards.

The first few levels seem unimportant and a little slow, but the story builds up so well thats its kind of awe-inspiring. I wish the second game had used the same interface.

Supposedly someone is working on a mod called "Deus Ex: Revisited" for the UT2004 engine. Havent heard much lately though.

Added the requirement in bold if you're playing on either of the harder two settings. I got stormed when I tried that. Survived, thanks to a combination of high abilities + high explosives. 😀

Curiousity - OP, what route did you take as a first-timer playing DX?

Edit - Also, my turn for a spoiler-free hint.

You should trust three people - your doctor, your lawyer, and your mechanic.

Keep those three trusts in mind as you progress through the game. It may save your life, or the life of someone close to you.

It could be very easy if done right.

Just walk in the front door, waste the thug in the lobby, talk to the girl and the dad.
Then cover the area with gas and explosive grenades (attach to walls).
Go up and talk to your brother.

By the time you and Paul make your way downstairs you will have very little resistance.
 
hehe 🙂. thnxs for the advice guys. I died the first time around by 3 NFS baddies and didn't save, 2nd time i died by that mobile gun turret, both times i took sniper rifle. Then I read the posts here and restarted again. Chose the GEP and after getting use to the gameplay and controls, I saved the hostage and captured the leader (backway) without a hitch.

I'm almost done with the 2nd mission. Just blew up the generator and the coptor is waiting for me on the roof, but i checked through gamefaq and noticed I missed a lot of things I could've done. Like talking to Smuggler, going in the sewers, getting a aug and a buch of other items. Should i bother running back to do those side missions?

if I recall correctly you get the crossbow pretty early anyway, while the GEP was pretty damn useful for dispatching the bots

you can get both the crossbow and sniper rifle from enemies in the liberty island level. that's why you pick the GEP gun in the beginning 🙂
 
Deus Ex is defenitely the best game ever. Don't use walkthroughs though, as the best part about the game is finding new secrets with every playthrough. It'll ruin the game.

When you talk to Smuggler, he clues you in to a buddy that was captured. Then he gives you a key to the sewers in Hells Kitchen. After you rescue the buddy Smuggler sells you his goodies at about 1/3 price. He also provides more goodies and info when you come back to New York later on.

This is what I find most impressive about this game. Despite having played it so many times already, I still keep discovering new areas in the maps, new conversation branches, and things like that.

By the way, any Deus Ex fan has to check out this site: http://www.it-he.org/deus.htm (it's full of spoilers, so don't go there until you've completed the game). I actually have a ton of other stuff to add to all the crap he describes there. 😀

Yeah, and even if you don't want to buy anything Smuggler is selling, it's still worth doing the side-quest he gives you. There is an armory room down there containing a ton of weapons and ammo, including a pack of WP rockets (there are only five in the entire game as far as I know).

I recently also found out that you get a funny dialogue if you don't meet Smuggler until the last time you go to that area.

"How do I know you're not a cop?"
"Maybe I'm a bad cop."

Haha, I've beaten the game over thirty times and still avoid spoilers on occasion. Even now I'm discovering something new each time, minor as it may be.
 
I played along time ago and the first mission/part of the game really didn't spark my interest.. you guys are saying I should play a little more and it gets better?

I'll be trying that out, hopefully you guys are right or else.. or else I'll get very very mad and send you guys letters telling you how mad I am! (hans brix, team america)

Most people think that Liberty Island sucks, although IMO it is still great. It defenitely improves later on though.

side missions are useful for upgrading your skills,don`t miss them.
 
It's a decent game that had the potential to be far better. It doesn't even compare to the original game, but the story is still pretty good and I think it's worth playing despite all the flaws.
 
I enjoyed the sequel more than the original.

It was tighter with more action, better weapons and more varied levels.
 
I don't know why, but this thread has inspired me to want to go play through Fallout/Fallout 2 again. Thanks! /does
