So when it's back together and doesn't work at all.....then what?

Fix. Send into Nikon.

Is Nikon REALLY going to accept a camera that's been washed several times and then disassembled/reassembled? I know I wouldn't. Especially if you do mods like 'upgrading' the weathersealing.

How will they know? As for the grip, there's no indication that it's been opened. The circuit boards have been cleaned. There are no mods yet.

That's deceiving and downright low.

Uh.... how is it low or deceiving? I tried my best to fix the grip myself. I can't. So I'm sending it in for repair.

In what world are you in? Virtually every single piece of electronics has it's warranty voided when you attempt to 'fix' it yourself. The reasoning is that you are going to fubar it up by opening it yourself, and Nikon doesn't want to try to fix the original problem plus whatever else you did to bork it. Additionally, as far as I know, Nikon is not responsible for repairing water damaged components under warranty. 'Cleaning' your grip so it looks like it hasn't sustained any water damage is, like foghorn67 said, deceitful.

Beyond all this, I kinda doubt that your grip is going to be cost-effective to repair. It's sustained major water damage based off your posts. Do you really think it's going to be easy to fix?

How you honestly think that throwing thousands of dollars away to 'test' the weatherproofing (NOT waterproofing) of a camera is a good idea is beyond me.

no, should've bought an E-3

No, should have never sold the Canon and spent money on good glass.

wasn't his canon (and a lot of his glass) all screwy to begin with already from abuse?

Cheap lenses.

But buying another camera and getting it all screwed up intentionally doesn't seem like the better choice.

well, no, it wouldn't be, heh. I think he just needs to be more careful.. from the old thread, it seemed like he beat the crap out of his gear.

Yup.

Hell when my uncle was here with his 1Ds MkIII (drool) and we were out in the rain, he had his covered up just like I had mine...and it was just a light rain too.

Cheapo ziploc bag.

I just think that there is no reason NOT to take care of your equipment. Even if it's weathersealed....why not still protect it when that protection costs next to nothing?

The need to find out on your own thousand dollar camera body when you are living out of your car (unless thats changed since your thread a few weeks back), and only have a few thousand in the bank is beyond me.

You should have taken some youtube video of it so we can all see this (no not naked, in a bathing suit lol)

Agreed with this 100%. When I'm shooting football in the rain at work with a 1DmkIIn and a big weathersealed lens, I cover them as best I can. I'm positive they'd work fine if exposed to the elements, even for hours. However, electronics+water is a risk, no matter what the manufacturer claims.

Also, OP: how does "weathersealing" in any way indicate that it will work fine under high-pressure hot water? That's absurd and I really hope that Nikon charges you a ton of money to get your camera fixed.

It's your camera and you sure can do anything you wanna do but what's the point of going crazy like that?
Based on what you've said before, it's not like you're rich enough to deal with it. You're destroying the camera hoping either Nikon or Mack fix it but that's just abusing the system.

Did you buy the accidental damage protection policy with your D300 and 17-55mm like several people suggested?

If not, Nikon is not required to cover it under warranty since you took it apart (not to mention subjected it to a shower...twice). Even if you clean it up I suspect they will have ways of telling that it's had water in it at some point and that you've taken it apart.

Somebody should forward this to the warranty dept for possible fraud alert ;) haha

I hope that they reject his warranty claim. Guys like him ruin the system for the rest of us (and he's the forum moderator?)

Okay, now we all got it out of our system, let's take it easy on FBB. As silly as this has been, he is a worthy contributor and a great resource to this forum.

Very true. I will agree with this.

That doesn't mean I have to be okay with him purposefully trying to see what it takes for the weather sealing to fail, then try and get it covered under warranty. I think he is trying to abuse the system and I don't agree with it.

If he had taken the D300 and put it in the shower, and didn't want to get it fixed under warranty (or had an "accidental" warranty coverage on it) then I would be fine. Still think he wasn't being intelligent with it. I would be intrigued to see the video of him putting a D300 in a shower....

Those of you who think that him putting the camera in the shower for 5 minutes is abuse...you really have no idea what the guy is capable of. I'm not surprised at all by him testing it out beforehand - if it couldn't survive that, he would've undoubtedly broken it in no time.

why is defrauding accidental coverage any better than defrauding materials and workmanship coverage?

I'm going to go out and buy a car with a 5-star crash rating and drive it straight into a brick wall. You know, I need to test these sort of things out beforehand and see if it can survive...

Seriously though, there is something wrong with your brain FBB.

Guys... I bought everything used. The D300 and the grip. Nikon warranties don't transfer. I don't have any warranty. I'm not defrauding anything here. I never even mentioned a warranty in the thread until now. I tested my gear. I broke my gear. I'm sending it in to be repaired.

D300 is fine BTW. Now it's just the grip.

Generally "accidental" coverages (depending on where you get it from) cover a lot of things along these lines. While I don't agree with abusing an item to get it covered under any kind of warranty, an "accidental" type is more expensive and designed to take into account abused equipment. I wouldn't agree with it, but I wouldn't be as against it as I am with under materials and workmanship type. Both are wrong, just one is a few levels worse IMO.

Glad to hear you aren't defrauding anything.

Now I have to ask. What would ever make you decide to take an expensive camera that you just got when you only have a few thousand in the bank (per your other threads) and purposely see how far it goes before it breaks? Then you have to spend more money on it, when you already are low on money.

PS. I realize it's just the grip thats broke now, and my point is just that why would you try to take something like that to the point of breaking

It's because of above reply.

Okay, let me get this straight. You bought a D300...and then took not one but TWO shower with it, just to test it???
