Honestly this thread has been very informative. Thanks for taking one for the team and letting us know how it has turned out.

There are still issues with the body - mainly, the inability to select AF points. The D-pad responds in the menu and stuff but doesn't move the AF point selection.

I want to open up the camera.

Thom Hogan has opened up D200 and D300 bodies before, and I just sent an email to him asking for any tips or instructions.

Whatever the reply, I think I'm still going to open it up. Once I get my 30D back I will document the procedure and figure out where the seals failed.

Are you going to mod the body, add seals, coat the circuit boards to resist moisture, etc? Might not be a bad idea if you're taking it apart.

I've heard of companies that do that for cell phones; they pull them apart, coat all the circuit boards and add weather seals, then put it back together.

It's the Lock switch that surrounds the DPad.

Email Tom Hogan about your experiences. I wouldn't be surprised if he put it up on his website (along with a disclaimer to never repeat what you did).

Seriously, WTF where you thinking? You really thought it could take this? Fresh water still has minerals that can damage the circuits and induce corrosion.
IT'S NOT THE WATER that causes shorts, it's what's in it. Always, always rinse with distilled water.

I was hoping that it could take this because I was hoping it would prevent any kind of water entry in the first place. I understand that it's the conductive minerals in the water that corrode, and I did rinse it with distilled water. Didn't help.

But I find this fascinating.

1. It's informative for people and shows people exactly what this vauge term of "weathersealed" really means.
2. I'm going to be disassembling this thing and documenting it for the web to see.
3. If I can figure out the weak spots, perhaps I can upgrade the weathersealing myself.
4. If #3 works, perhaps I can upgrade the weathersealing on other people's cameras as well.
5. It's entertaining and interesting for me.

So when it's back together and doesn't work at all.....then what?

Fix. Send into Nikon.

Is Nikon REALLY going to accept a camera that's been washed several times and then disassembled/reassembled? I know I wouldn't. Especially if you do mods like 'upgrading' the weathersealing.

How will they know? As for the grip, there's no indication that it's been opened. The circuit boards have been cleaned. There are no mods yet.

It would not surprise me if they have some kind of water indicator on the inside of the camera - similar to how they do it with cell phones

no, should've bought an E-3

K20D would probably be fine ;)

I must say though, I have read direct stories on the abuse that E-3 owners have given their cameras. I've never read a Pentaxian doing the same~ although I've read of plenty taking pics while it was drizzling outside.

And seriously FBB...why don't you go online and read other people's experiences first? I typed in google "is D300 weather sealed" and clicked on the FIRST link that appeared and it tells you that they are not truly truly weather sealed; it is direct user experiences on the Nikonians forum. Knowledge builds upon knowledge - you could have saved a lot of time and money if you just checked out other people's experiences...

As I think about it, I'm honestly not sure what you are trying to accomplish given the same amount of information that can be read out there.

No, should have never sold the Canon and spent money on good glass.

and some plastic bags

Yup. That is my camera protector.

Big ziploc with a slit in the end for the lens to go through. Works like a charm.

That's deceiving and downright low.

Uh.... how is it low or deceiving? I tried my best to fix the grip myself. I can't. So I'm sending it in for repair.
