And to the people who keep saying they ask you to turn off your phones before a movie.. what theaters are you going to?? The ones I go to (mostly Regal) only ask that you silence them.

I would have told the manager to go pound sand. That would piss me off.

I guess I'll join in on this clusterbacle.

Some people have said why not remove yourself and walk into the lobby to text-message. Well, I'm sorry, but someone shuffling through a row of people and then up or down an aisle is going to be a bit more distracting than a momentary and hidden source of non-focused backlight.

Some of you feel the need to flame (for all intents, yes it's flaming) the OP and call him self-centered or inconsiderate for thinking the world revolves around him. You may want to rethink that position, as the same can be easily said for you. YES you paid to see the movie, but so did he. And I'm sure you've never been a source of distraction at a movie, ever. Give me a break. You're in public, do not forget that, there will always be distractions. Just because you put down your $7 and step into a theater doesn't mean society automatically bends around your intollerance. If you cannot keep your blood pressure down, stay at home, I'm sure you have the money to afford decent equipment. If it's the public union you like, or the atmosphere of enjoying a movie with other patrons, then you have no reason to complain. You paid for exactly what you're getting. There will always be teenagers, there will always be crying babies, there will always be loud black women.

I understand that theaters have stadium seating, and you can plainly see the people in front of you, and I understand that your eyes are instinctively drawn to some new source of faint light. Whether you keep your attention on their phone or on the HUGE MOVIE SCREEN in front of you, is up to you. You DO have a choice, but some people love to be unhappy.

When I enter a theater, I put my phone on vibrate. If it vibrates during the movie (trust me, only I can hear it, it's barely audible when cushioned by my leg), I squeeze the button to stop it. When the movie is over, I check the phone. I wish all people would do this, but I understand what it means to be in public. I have tollerance. The light from an LCD backlight is the LEAST of any distraction I've ever noticed in a theater. I'd hate to think what going to a theater with some of you is like. Ha, the light I can handle! Miserable movie-going grumps like some of you, that's another distraction all together. (Though I do love you all, and I do not judge who you are based solely on your actions in a movie theater *COUGH*).

You think the longest post in the thread is the best because its simple?

Dude, seriously, you LOST!
Now you're just looking for justification and backup.
You know you were the asshole, you got punked by "The Man", and didnt have the balls to stand up back there and fight so then you came to an anonymous place to cry.
Except when you got here you were suprised to find that not all the other kiddies feel for you and want to hold your hand and eat Ben & Jerrys with you.

Grow up man!
Just let it go. You're angry (rightly so) but it will be much healthier for you to forget it and move on with your life.

Thats it, I'm done. Now I go to work and feel productive again.

Texting in a theatre in not necessary, is annoying to some people and is not permitted in most theatres. I guess the OP found out the hard way and won't be doing it again.

What a boatload of crap! yes we both paid to see the movie but what gives OP special privilege to break the rules?. AND WHY SHOULD
MYSELF OR ANYONE BE TOLERANT OF ANYONE WHO CHOOSES TO IGNORE POSTED RULES!, IF THEY ALLOWED ANY USE OF CELL
PHONES WATCHING THE SHOW WOULD BE A JOKE, THERE WOULD BE DOZENS OF IGNORANT SELF-CENTERED ASSHATS YAPPING
THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FILM...oh, and I don't expect anyone to "bend around my intolerance", I expect them to FOLLOW THE
POSTED RULES so we can all enjoy the movie.

What fvcking rules are you talking about. I just got out of Rush Hour 3 and it said SILENCE YOUR PHONES. No where did it say don't even take out your phone. If you take it out you're outta here.

STFU and get a life. As crappy as the movie was I did NOT notice people texting. Nor could I even notice it happen. Given stadium style seating there's no way you can see someone texting in front of you unless they hold it up at eye level. The only people you could see with phones are the ones WAYYYYyy in front of you. Even then watch the movie damnit.

We're talking about texting, not TALKING ON THE PHONE. Stop bringing out examples of people talking on phones when this is NOT what we're dealing with.

texting someone in a theatre doesn't disturb anyone else. Especially in Bourne when it's pretty loud most of the time. You guys need to chill out.

BTW I saw the movie tonight as well, pretty sweet.

Hey moron, SILENCE YOUR PHONES="use vibrate only" then answer call in lobby.
we've already had several people in this thread who have experienced texting
during the movie and found it distracting THAT'S WHY OP GOT BOUNCED OUT!

Like what? What did people do before cell phones? You can't turn your cell phone off for 2 hours? And if you can't refrain from keeping your cell phone off, how about having the common courtesy to sit in an aisle seat next to an exit?

Would you wear a cell phone when you're at the gym, playing a game of basketball, swimming, cycling, etc... How about at dinner on a first date? My point is there are plenty of times when one does not wear/bring their cell phones. Why can't a place with lots of people where it can be a distraction be one of those places too?

I'm not gong through all 5 pages of responses, I think this thread literally exploded.

I'll just say that people like the OP are one of the reasons I don't go to the theaters anymore. I wanted to see a lot of the summer blockbusters, TMNT, Spiderman 3, Shrek 3, PotC3, etc, etc. The only one I ended up seeing is Harry Potter and I went to the IMAX to do that. The rest I'll have to wait for the DVD. It's not so much that you were even texting during the movie, it's that you simply don't have respect for other people. You think the world revolves around you and whatever message you happen to be getting at the time. Whatever it was, I'm sure it could have waited until the movie is over.

For the person who said they have to answer messages on their BB, same to you. If you're on 24/7 tech support all the time, tell whoever it is in the office you're going to see a movie and will be off the radar for a couple of hours and if it's an emergency, call several times. That way, if you notice your phone start to vibrate a lot, you can very get up and walk out of the theater to handle an emergency.

I don't think people should have to turn your phone off to see a movie, simply put it on vibrate. If you're going to check it, have respect for the ones around you that paid 10 bucks to see a movie and get up and leave the theater to do so.

i love the several people here that like to say "tell whoever's in the office you're blah blah blah" and things along those lines ...cause that'll work. who are you to tell the guy what to tell his work and what not lol tell that to ari gold and he might snatch your agency card.

What if there aren't any aisle seats? What if your family members had an unexpected emergency at the local hospital? Granted, you would not get a text from that.

Totally different situations.

People that get bothered by "bright" cell phones in theatres are just too anal. I never text myself but I have no problem with people doing so in a movie, as long as the key tones are slient.

Like others have mentioned, others eating popcorn/getting up to go to bathroom is FAR more distracting than someone texting discreetly.

I am pretty sure I have never seen a "don't bring flashlights" into the theatre let alone a "don't turn them on if you got it" either, but that kind of shit is just common sense though, no? Ah, so because it only said to silence them, you can text with impunity. Got it.

To all those who think it's OK to text in a theatre, if I am in a theatre and I see you texting I will ask you to put it away. If you don?t, security will, because I will ask them to.
Ill probably buy the security guy a beer after the show.

So you can argue all you want in here but if you text with me around in a theatre, you get told to stop it, if you don?t, you get evicted from the theatre. I win, the crowd win, YOU LOOSE.

Apparently you can't take your pants off and run up and down the aisles either. They should state all the rules at the beginning. :|

How is it a different situation? What if it's an emergency? How are people going to contact you? What if you're on call?

So, if you go to the gym, you must clip your cell phone to your weight belt b/c you might get an emergency phone call and/or work call?
