You have to factor in the taxes you pay that goes for WalMart employees on Medicaid, WalMarts tax breaks, etc.
Not to mention the interest on the money China loaned you to buy that cheap stuff.
All in all, its a good deal today, bad deal long run.
Assuming you still have a job or that your salary is not going down because of cheap Chinese labor.

I also just got back from Wal*Mart. Got $62 worth of stuff, including a jar of pickles. I was loading my car and the pickle bag ripped open and broke all over the parking lot. Pickles everywhere, glass everywhere (under my wheel too). I picked up the glass as best a possible, but it was dark. I left the pickles there. I almost got in my car and left, but then I realized that the glass may flatten my tire or injure someone after I leave (plus I wanted new pickles), so I went back in. I requested that they have someone clean up the glass, but they said, "Nah, someone comes and cleans the lot after we close". I was shocked that the didn't give a crap about safety, but too aggrivated to argue, so I got my pickles and went home.

Walmart on the weekend is mass American consumerism at its lowest and is part of the reason why people named Mohammed are smashing planes into us. :( :)

yeah? what is NOT made in china heh.

I have plenty of stuff that wasn't made in China. Most of it cost me more than $8, though.

yes there are items. just not very many. this is not a walmart thing its a US thing. Personally its something i feel we should reverse.

There are plenty of items if you look for them, you're just not going to find them at WalMart. They're also more expensive because it costs a lot more to pay American workers than Chinese workers. For example, I have a bag I bought made by these guys. It cost me $90, but it was made in San Francisco and it's guaranteed for life. I could have gotten a crappier bag for 1/3 the price at WalMart.

If you feel we should reverse the trend of manufacturing jobs moving overseas, speak with your wallet. If you're going to complain on a messageboard and then go buy chinese products at walmart, you're as much a part of the problem as anyone else.

Oh come on. The goal is to get American's working for $2.96hr like their Chinese counterparts. We're getting there.

I get my groceries at Trader Joe's and Costco. They're both cheaper than the supermarkets, and the clientele is less obese than at W*lmart.

Costco is mass American consumerism at its grossest. Gotta love them super size boxes and bags of processed food and the 40 packs of sodas. :)

Trader Joes is pretty good too. Besides the local Co-Ops it's the best quasi- health food store there is.

I avoid my local Super Walmart like the plague. Parking is rediculous. The clientele is unique to WalMart.

What you don't like mexicans and such with their 15 kids?

Or the rednecks in sweats and wifebeaters?

Worse are the overweight childbeaters that slap their 2-4 year old children across the face while yelling at them. Ugg, I hate that.

I only go there over lunch when I need something right away. The families that go at that time aren't as rude to their children. Maybe this group has just given up.

i go to costco and the only processed things i come out with are veggie burgers and chicken sausages. Otherwise it's all meats and veggies. I personally drive 30 minutes out of NYC to the suburbs to go to Costco. The NYC Costco's are as bad as Wal Mart.

TJ's is OK, but Whole Foods beats it by a mile. Whole Foods has the best produce, meat and fish department you can find anywhere. The one in Westchester county has a whole isle dedicated to grains, rice and beans in bulk at nice prices. About 100 different kinds.

Just got back from Wal*Mart myself.
Picked up more melatonin for my non-sleeping habit.

for some things it's worth it

I get most meat at Costco since I think it's very good quality. Whole Foods produce is pricey, but you can't beat the quality. And it lasts a long time. i've bought cheaper produce at other places, but it goes bad in a few days. I bought cheapo spices and Whole Foods spices over the last two years. the whole foods taste better and I use less of them so it ends up being the same. I bought some pepper at Costco and ended up using a lot of it. I was staying with family a few months back and they had Whole Foods pepper. i used the same amount and it almost killed people since it was more potent.

Costco and Whole Foods have some chicken sausage that is the same brand. Whole Foods is 4 times the price, but the Costco version has preservatives. I used to buy the Costco, and bought the Whole Foods a few days ago. WF tastes a lot better.

For the things I buy there, TJ is cheaper. Yes, I'm comparing to regular supermarkets, not the upscale ones. Supermarkets around here jacked up their regular prices to make up for their sale prices.

1/2 gal milk $1.80 at TJ, $2.20 at supermarket
dozen xl eggs $1 at TJ, $2 at supermarket
sourdough bread $1.60 at TJ, $2.50-3.00 at supermarket
6 pack imported beer $5.00-6.00 at TJ, $7.00 at supermarket
cereal $2.00-2.50 at TJ, $3.00-4.00 at supermarket
