Just got a PS3... my initial impressions from a 360 user

No, I'm looking at it from the perspective of every other person I've met with a 360. The HDD is necessary for them. As for people I've talked to (via forums, for example), I'm having a hard time thinking of a case where someone outright said "I don't have a HDD for my 360 and never plan on getting one".

I'm sure there are people out there who don't need the HDD, so they don't get it. However, based on my personal experience and observation, the majority of 360 owners have a 360 HDD (whether it came with the console or was bought separately). Now, I could be wrong, and I'll have no problem admitting that my observations gave me a wrong conclusion if proven otherwise. That said, I feel like my perspective on this is based on logical reasoning given the information given to me.

I have no problem with Microsoft offering a 360 without a HDD. However, I do feel that it's fair to compare the Elite 360 with the standard PS3 model since I'm under the impression that the majority of 360 owners have a HDD for their system. It'd be easier to do comparisons if Sony also had a $200 PS3 model for sale, but they don't.

So, yes, the PS3 at $300 offers more in the way of hardware features than the 360 at $300. However, I did state that you could argue that the 360 is a better deal when it comes to software based features. See, I also think the majority of 360 users utilize the software advantages it has, so I'd say it's fair to argue based on that. As for game libraries, that all comes down to opinion.

I never said this was "bad", so maybe you should pay closer attention to my words. I'm not even attacking the 360 in any way. Someone simply stated the 360 was behind, and I had to agree with them on a hardware level based on my stated observations and very clear reasons on why I made the comparisons that I did.

As a side note, I do think that Microsoft could at least throw a wi-fi chip into their system without charging extra. A lot of people seem to want it. Hell, you can get a wi-fi chip for $10 or $15, so I'm sure Microsoft could get them for super cheap. The same could go for a small hard drive, I'm guessing. Instead, they give their customers the "choice". If they want such an item, which it seems many people do, they have to pay out the ass for it.

It's a smart business move, I'll give them that. But as far as accessory pricing goes, I think Microsoft and Nintendo are the biggest offenders this generation. I think Microsofts HDD and Wi-Fi adapter pricing are what make them the worst, though. Though all three big companies are bad about it, I think Sony is the one doing the best service to its customers (it's all relative, though). In particular, their controllers are all wireless and have rechargeable batteries built in. Considering the 360 and PS3 controllers retail for about the same price, I do think Microsoft could do better.

Like I said, that part was just a side note. Just guesses and opinions.

How is Nintendo an "offender" as far as accessories ? Wii comes with everything, even a good game. Wii controllers are more sophisticated devices than ps3 or 360 controllers, but don't cost more.

As far as the $300 priced consoles, neither one is worth $300 now, if they ever were. PS3 is an expensive Blu-Ray player that can play a handful of good games. The $300 360 is an overpriced piece of junk with a lot of good games that appeal to people who like to play the same games over and over, either sports, or shooters, take your pick.

The 360 arcade when it's on sale for $100 is worth that. The best things about a 360 work without a hard drive or wifi, those things mostly add convenience.

Another thing about the Wii that doesn't get mentioned enough, the Wii has a lot of online functionality, like web browsing, and some media center functionality, Netflix, picture and video viewing.

It's also very well designed, small, quiet, and reliable.

People. The PS3 is fail. I have both a 360 and a PS3 and right now the PS3 is just a BR player. The exclusive games for the PS3 just really suck and are really geared to 13-21 year olds, which I guess is the bulk of the market, but for people like me, mid-40s, who grew up with video games since the late 70s, the PS3 is just fail.

I am nearly 40 and have played video games since the late 70s/early 80s as well. Sony definitely botched the release of the PS3, no question there. But since then, they've made better decisions in terms of the release of the PS3 Slim and the end to their PS3 "sku of the week" game.

As far as games, to each his own, but the God of War series is classic and MLB 10 The Show is quite good as well.

When I buy a game and if its a xplatform game, I get it for the 360, why? because I know if I go online someone will be there playing with me. While I am not a huge fan of the 360 exclusives I find them more to my liking. I purchased FFXIII on the PS3 only for the one disc and better graphics compared to the 360, but ya know what? That game sucked major ass. If it had remained a PS3 exclusive I think I would have chucked it out the window, console and all. Sony has failed on the PSP and the PS3 bigtime.

Sony has definitely failed on the PSP front. That is a fine piece of hardware but Sony did a horrible job marketing and getting people to publish games for it. The PSP Go is a terrible, terrible idea, and I don't know what the heck they were thinking with that thing.

The bottom line for me was that I was sick and tired of hardware issues with my 360 and decided to get a PS3, since I felt Sony had finally set the right course. I'd like to buy all multi-platform games for the PS3, but since most of my friends/family have 360s, I will probably (and reluctantly) have to buy a few games for it still.

My PSP is under 2" of dust. The games suck. The DS and 360 with all of their "inferior" technolgy, has managed to spank the PSP and PS3. The last straw the the retarded PSPgo. I am amazed sony is still in business.

I bought the PS3 mainly because I think the exclusives are quite a bit BETTER actually. Really the only exclusives I've liked on the 360 are Fable 2 and Mass Effect 1/2. With the PS3 I bought it mainly for the platformers: Little Big Planet and Ratchet and Clank. I'm tearing through Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction because it's such a blast. Plus there were other PS3 games that caught my eye: Infamous (which is ok so far), God of War 3, 3D Dot Game Heroes (which is pretty slick thus far as well). Plus is has Resistance 1/2, Killzone 2, and Drakes Fortune 1/2 which should all be good for at least a rental or cheaply used.

The 360 has Halo, which is pretty overrated and I never really got into much. Gears of War which has been fun enough playing through on co-op, but fairly forgettable and not worth playing again.

I do agree that the PSP was a pretty big failure. I had one a while back and had it running all the homebrew and stuff and it still wasn't worth keeping.

For a frame of reference... game updates on my 360 take about 5 seconds... logging me out of my sign on, downloading, and re-logging into my account. I don't know why the PS3 is so slow?

Wait, what!?! For reference, my PS3 updates take long slow minutes...sometimes even 20 minutes. I usually walk away and do something else for awhile. Fvckin' Sony! D:

I'm gonna try that PS3 proxy server thing...

Yeah, that was kind of my point originally. The 360 updates are so quick and streamlined you barely know they happened. The PS3 is frustratingly slow. I mean you'd never know it if you didn't know how the 360 went, but being used to the 360 going so fast you get pretty annoyed w/ PS3 updates.

Wifi is a feature.

Wii, PS3, DS, and PSP all have wifi built in.

360 does not.

(This is a fact)

Like the Wii lacked the HDD feature and the PS3 lacks..something I'm sure.

P.S. People who use the word tool are such douchenozzles

Not sure why you include the DS and PSP in the discussion - I don't really equate handhelds with consoles.

Back to the 360 vs PS3, both systems have their pluses and minuses. I couldn't care less about WiFi, so to me that's not a feature I care about for consoles.

My biggest complaint for the 360 is the external power supply. My biggest complaint for the PS3 is lack of infrared. For my usage, the lack of an infrared port is a much bigger missing feature than anything missing from the 360s feature set. I won't bore you with the long gory details of me trying to setup the PS3 with a universal remote 🙂.

That's a good point and what prevented me from getting a Harmony to use in my Man Cave.

I actually have a Harmony 890, which does both IR and RF, but I could not get it to work reliably on the PS3 for some reason. Consequently my wife will not use the PS3 for anything than gaming. I was thinking about getting the new Harmony 900, but I can't justify the $400 for a new remote 🙂.

exactly... I get frustrated with any updates on PS3 because of how slow they are. I guess I wouldn't have noticed if I wouldn't have had a 360. The 360 is very very fast

Okay, this must be trolling.

This discussion is getting bloated and useless. I expect this thread to supernova.

I'm 41, and I enjoy gaming on my PS3. Granted, the only online game I've tried is Resistance 2. Different Strokes for different folks.

I agree on the PSP Go, though. Somebody at Sony needs to be booted in the head.

See I just don't think MGS4 is for me. At $20 it seems like a good deal but I haven't played MGS since 2 and even then I was just a kid who skipped all the story... So I have no idea what's happening.

If you have a PS2, definetly pick up MGS3: Subsistance (has the better camera then "snake-eater" version of the same game.) I'd pass on MGS4, unless you wanted to play the one section where you go to
Shadow Moses
so you can see it in PS3 level graphics.

The PSP as a handheld console has been somewhat of a failure, but it's always been rather nice if you mod the thing. It also has some nice games on it, as I've rather enjoyed the remade Megaman games... Capcom even included Max Payne-style slow-mo 😉!

As a FYI, I noticed 3D Dot Game Heroes was mentioned in here a few times... anyone interested in the game might want to take note that Slickdeals reports that Amazon has it on sale for 29.99 with a $10 future game credit.

Just thought I'd toss that part out there.

There's no IR? Fuuuuuuuuuu...

Nope. You can buy IR adapters, but they are expensive and some have limitations. For example, IIRC, most of them can't actually power the PS3 on. Logitech makes one, but it is $60 and I don't recall if it is one of the rare ones that can actually turn the thing on or not. I'm too lazy to Google it now.

Suffice it to say, that is one place Sony messed up on the PS3.

EDIT: Ok, my brief bout of laziness has subsided:

It is only $50 and I suspect that it can actually power the PS3 on, unlike most of the other adapters. At least a couple of reviews indicate it can, FWIW.

Well the Logitech adapter is down to $50 on Amazon, but I would still need to buy a second Harmony as my 880 is in our main entertainment center. Maybe I'll see what eBay can do for me. 🙂

Not to mention, if you're a God of War fan, they'll be releasing a second God of War for the PSP. God of War: Ghost of Sparta takes place between the events of God of War I and God of War II.

Yup.....my purchases are almost evenly split. PS3 has the better baseball game, has Uncharted exclusively, an adult game and one of the best ever. Demon Souls.....yup such a kiddie type Nintendo game, I know ;-) I could go on and on. Trolling and/or discrediting yourself is just bad form.

Actually, from Sony's point of view, they got it right. By making it difficult to control the PS3 with a third-party remote, they can sell more of their own bluetooth remote control which actually works quite well.

I got mine for $20, and quite honestly, I've been rather spoiled by not having to aim it at the PS3 for it to work. Sometimes it takes a second for me to realize that I have to actually aim my TV's remote control for it to work.

That's not to say that I wouldn't prefer a cheap all-in-one remote solution. I have to use three right now (TV, PS3, and a SONY Receiver :thumbsdown🙂.

PS3 is awesome... although all I do on it right now is plug in my USB drive and watch The Wire :awe:

I'll finish Fallout 3 soon... when i'm done watching this epic show 🙂

on the note of quietness, i couldn't believe how quiet my new 360 is compared to the old one. i got it like in early april (an arcade from amazon when they were $159) and holy crap the thing is virtually silent. it was manufactured like march 19th 2010 or something close, and man oh man it was a nice surprised how much quieter it was than my other two (one banned is first gen, and other jacked up one was first gen elite).

when i was installing ssf4 to the hard drive i couldn't believe that i couldnt really hear a drive spinning at all.

I think it's an Arcade thing.

I have a Jasper Arcade unit that was from the Christmas '08 bundle batch and it is very quiet. My buddy got a new Jasper Elite just recently and it still is pretty loud. Not sure what the difference is.

The arcade model of the 360 does not include a hard drive.

The arcade version is also $200 (and typically on sale for $150-175), it intentionally lacks alot of stuff for the "casual" gamer who doesn't care about online multiplayer or downloading extra content.

Jesus, my price was freaking $15 off retail and that's all people seem to pick up on? Fuck, SORRY, don't get your panties in a twist over a simple price mistake. My point being is the 360 has multiple price points for it's controllers where the PS3 doesn't.

Your mistake...and now you must suffer the consequences! D:

In theory he Xbox 360 exclusives should appeal to me more but most of 'em are crappy. Halo is about the worst series ever conceived, so bland and boring. Forza Motorsport is great but I think I'd be just as happy with Gran Turismo (if it was ever released). Fable is so-so. Honestly the first Gears of War is the only exclusive that made me happy I had a 360, the sequel was utter trash. On the flip side I would have loved to play MGS4, Demon Soul, Uncharter, InFamous, and God of War.

But I play so many online games and such that Xbox Live will make me a 360 guy from here on out. I know that PSN works but even my friends who have both consoles and are unbiased say that pretty much every cross platform game they've tried runs better online with the 360. Also, one my friends said that while the PS3 supports bluetooth headsets it seems that no one online ever uses them, he was playing MW2 is utter silence (which can be good or bad depending on who you're playing with I suppose).

Both systems have their ups and downs, I've got a 360 but I'd love a PS3 for the exclusives and BluRay, but the wife will say no to another gaming console.

People. The PS3 is fail.

I think if you look at the numbers based on release date for each console, the PS3 is ahead from a time-of-release perspective. Hardly a fail.

I am amazed sony is still in business.

Again, you apparently have no idea worldwide how much more popular the PS3 is than the 360. Of course, you apparently believe the U.S. to be the world, so I can understand your confusion.
