Just got a PS3... my initial impressions from a 360 user

better than no wifi :awe:

For me it wasn't. I spent a lot of frustrating time fighting with it to try to get it to work, and it ended up being a waste of time. I never had any delusions that I'd be able to get my 360 working in my bedroom without a really long Ethernet cable.

So in the end I bought a $100 device that solved my problem - which as it turns out is also how much the 360 Wifi adapter costs. 😉

Funny you mention that, as it was a chore to get LBP to connect and let me get on the community page last night. I kept getting 403 errors and such, but eventually it worked enough that I could accept the EULA and get in. Still not a good first impression :\

I have both and am not particularly a fanboy of either......both are fine. I do wish however, that the PS3 store was done better. On the 360, your demos can be nicely arranged in chronological order, 'just in', and top downloads. On the PS3 it's a mish mash. Good luck finding the latest demos. Perhaps Sony doesn't want to expose itself as having far fewer demos than MS.

It's not that difficult. The store has a latest release section where everything is in chronological order and there's a top downloads section on the right side. They only update once per week so it's not exactly difficult to find the latest stuff.

Another thing I've noticed it how long it takes the PS menus to load when it's not much more than text. I hit the PS button, takes forever to load, then when it does and I scroll left and right, each option in those categories take a while to load fully as well. Makes it all seem very clunky.

Weird. My PS3 works with the wifi flawlessly. Downloads quickly, and never had any lag.

My Wii had issues on my old network, but on my new network it works fine.

360 sits there disconnected from the rest of the world, due to it being behind in features.

Definitely! 😉 (No, seriously. RENT, don't buy)

They are pretty short games. Only buy them if you are a big completionist - that's the only way I can see you getting enough gaming hours to justify a purchase.

Hahahahahaha "behind in features" hahahaha. What a tool.

Wifi is a feature.

Wii, PS3, DS, and PSP all have wifi built in.

360 does not.

(This is a fact)

Like the Wii lacked the HDD feature and the PS3 lacks..something I'm sure.

P.S. People who use the word tool are such douchenozzles

Got rid of my 360 and got a Slim. Have no Wifi connection issues with the PS3 and it`s fast. System updates do take longer on the PS3 but games seem fine. I bought Live but hardly ever used it but it is better than on PS3 but never got my money`s worth cus I either only play single player games or games with someone else there. PS3 is the best blu-ray plyer in it`s price range which is great as well. Had a launch 360 and was super loud in every aspect and of course the Slim is super quiet. My brother`s launch PS3 is much quieter than my launch 360 was. Also much happier that I don`t have to buy battery packs for my controllers.

Blu-Ray, built in wi-fi, controllers are all wireless with built in rechargeable batteries, hard drive included in all models (and it's replaceable), etc.

Yeah, the 360 is behind in many ways and has been from the start. Of course, it has more online features than the PS3, so you can argue either way depending on what interests you most.

I only own a ps3, so I am learning some stuff in this here thread. For one, I wish the ps3 allowed for full installs like the 360 does. The slims come with at least a 120gig hard drive; maybe a lot of people use it for media storage but I doubt I've used more than 10, if that.
I do agree that the system and game updates take a while, but I assumed that's the way it is with consoles, not having a 360 to compare to. The only issue I've had so far is trying to join matches in BlazBlue online. I don't know if this is due to the wifi or some other issue, but I generally don't play online so I haven't bothered trying to figure it out. Maybe I'll try again when I complete the story. Can't comment on other games, since BlazBlue is the only one I've tried online.

And I thought it was just me! I agree 110%; why do those stupid icons take so long to load? I'm sure it's not more than a few second, but I liken it to having to wait for your start menu on your PC to open up rather than having it display instantly. It's not terrible, but I still find it unacceptable. Seriously, wtf is the system doing that takes it so long?

It's lacking Blu-Ray and Wifi, but are you seriously saying Microsoft is behind because they give you cheaper options (rechargeable, replaceable AAs and a no hard drive option if you don't need one)? :\

The arcade model of the 360 does not include a hard drive. The elite model does. Bundled games aside, there's little difference between them. I've yet to meet anyone who does not use a hard drive for their 360, so what I say is based off the model that comes with the HDD. I understand a small minority will opt out of the HDD, though.

If you compare the $300 models of the 360 and PS3, then the 360 is no cheaper than the PS3. Therefore, there are no "cheaper options" to speak of. The PS3 simply offers some extra things (mostly hardware related) for the same price. In that case, you can ignore that the PS3 offers a HDD standard, but it is still replaceable.

One major thing the 360 has on the PS3:

The 360 game saves are to the HDD which is transferable to a new console while some of the PS3 have copyrighted (console specific) saves. If your PS3 craps out on you, you can be screwed over on MANY MANY game saves. Sony seriously screwed that one up.

I have a Wii, 360 and PS3. I have quit playing my 360 and play the Wii and PS3 only. Here is a thread to look at for games that fall into copyrighted saves.

I'll just leave this right here...

Anyway, gorcorps, what I want to know is...

Did you think that it was a good purchase? That is all.

My PS3 updates were downloading super slow, and then I found out about PS3 Proxy Server. If you google it, it's easy to find, download the actual proxy app and the GUI for it. Turned a 4+ hour update for LBP into a 10 minute update, if that. It's awesome, you just run the software on your PC and point the PS3 to your PC to use as a proxy server. Very simple to set up, very effective at killing those insane download times.

Dunno why Sony offered the option for this, but it's ultimately up the publisher/developer to prevent copying save games. Having said that, of the 50+ disc based PS3 games I own, I think the only games that have have this implemented have all been Capcom games (Resident Evil 5 comes to mind). Almost all of my games will allow for copying your save game to a USB key without a problem, which is nice, since I move between the PS3 in my living room to the one in the bedroom quite a bit.

Who doesn't need a hard drive these days? If anything, Microsoft went to great effort to splinter their user base and make it difficult for developers by not making a hard drive standard on the 360 (especially after every XBox 1 came with one, wth, really?).

MS shouldn't be selling 360s that don't come with HDs anymore, and yet it's by far their most popular sku at $200. They lure people in with the Arcade's 512MB internal memory, and then rob them by charging way too much for add-on drives.

Having said that, giving users the option to install 360 games to the HD is awesome, and Sony could stand to do the same thing. I'm not sure why Red Dead Redemption only install 600MB to the HD on the PS3, but the load times are quite a bit slower than the 360 version, and installing RDR to the HD on the 360 version makes a pretty substantial difference.

Seems kind of silly to ask who doesn't need a hard drive, then say that the only model without a hard drive is the highest selling model...

Anyone who is not on Xbox Live doesn't need a hard drive. You know, about half the country doesn't even have broadband. I bought an Xbox 360 Arcade, then got a refurb hard drive + controller for $30.

???? You're only looking at this from your own perspective. You're someone who needs a hard drive. Great, good for you.

There are people who don't need a hard drive. Microsoft offers those people an option that is cheaper, because it lacks a feature that they don't need. In other words, they offer a cheaper option. And for some reason you think that's a bad thing.

I know... like you care to hear more of this bullshit right? Anyhoo, I picked up a 250gig ps3 as gamestop just started selling a 'father's day' pack that comes with Infamous and Little Big Planet for the same $350 price. Since those were games I was planning on getting anyway I went with it.

Built in wifi is very nice. I haven't played anything online yet, but just not having another cable coming from the console is awesome.

The update system is awful. It's taking forever to update LBP and I don't know why. This game update is taking longer than any full system update I've ever had on the 360. You don't know how much longer it truly takes unless you've used both consoles.

I've only played Infamous for any real length of time, and I know it's just one game but I'm fairly dissappointed at how bad it looks at 720p. I have a 720p screen and prefer to run it at that, but it runs 1080i as well. In order for Infamous to look any good at all (read: lessen the aliasing) it MUST be run at 1080i. I know that's how it should be, I've just never seen aliasing that bad at 720p... even Halo 3 which was pretty damned bad.

Still, I'm really just nit picking and am just rambling about my new toy while LBP is updating.

I bought my PS3 in 2008... I still game 95% of the time on my 360 (I like the controller). The updates for anything on PS3 are pretty brutal. I don't know what it is but the download and updates take forever!
