Went to Safeway with my live-in GF tonight to pick up food, and we bought some beer (I am 23, she is 20). At the register, the checker, after carding me, asked me if SHE was 21. I said no, since she isn't and it doesn't matter. She said that they're not allowed to sell to "young couples where one person isn't 21."

WFT!?!?

Then she said, "I'll sell to you this time because I know the next person in line and they aren't working for the cops, but next time she has to stay in the car."

WHAT THE FVCK DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE IF SHE IS IN THE CAR OR IN THE STORE?

FVCK YOU, SAFEWAY.

I mean, I assume this is just a specific store policy and not some new state (CA) or nationwide thing I don't know about? Christ, next thing you know, they won't sell to parents with their children with them. Last time I was in the Safeway down the street they didn't even card me.

Anyone else encountered anything like this?

Yeah, they do that here. It's so retarded. Better to hide the underage person you are buying it for than be upfront about it. :|

It's not a policy specific to Safeway. I'm 19 and have had people who refused to sell because I was tagging along, heh.

Yeah, I've had this happen exactly.

I was with my uncle, he was 29. My mom called me on my cell and asked me to have my uncle pick her up some beer, so, we both went into the beer store and he had me tell point out what she wanted. So, I was with him, and they refused to sell it to him.

I worked for a grocery chain in the midwest, and when we went to liquor training (at the police station, by the police), they said that we were required to card anyone who looked under 30, regardless of whether they're the one buying it or if they're just with the person who is.

i've seen it happen.. i saw it happen while i was working there.. i'm not sure if it's store policy or CA state law.. sounds like a store policy type thing though.. i agree with you, i think it's just silly

I think it's a policy for all safeways. I remeber they enforced this all the time at a Safeway I used to go to.

the safeway i go to got busted for selling to under age. i went in to get some coolers for the wif and the entire liquor section was empty with crime scene tape criss-crossed over the empty refrigated shelves and several signs posted by the Colorado Dept of something stating the store had lost its liquor license for 30 days.

Im sure the store lost a huge bit of profit from that and the suits at safeway made a company policy just to cover their butts. im not saying the one store that i saw this happend to was the cause if it, im sure there were many other stores over the years that caused them to do this.

lol, where have you been for the last.. several years?

You can't be with anyone under 21 and buy alcohol here in Oregon. Some places don't enforce, but most do.

The only exception is children with their parents.

At the 7-11 I went to, they said the person waiting in the car had to come in and show their ID.
Yep....

It's easier at grocery stores since you can walk in and go your seperate ways and nobody is the wiser.

i remember in college they did this all the time, any store we went to carded all members of a party if liquor was part of the tab no matter who was paying. Its a normal thing, dont get all bent outta shape about it, if it kinda helps curb underage drinking even a little bit than more power to the "rule" or whatever it is :p

Yeah, who cares if you buy a few bottles of JDs and let your children drink it.

we are told to use discretion at work when selling alcohol. If there's the possibility of a minor consuming it with the person they are with or if we suspect somebody buying it for them, we refuse the right to sell it to them.

I've noticed at the stores in the town I attend school at, they don't card everyone ever, just the buyer.

Well, when I'm cashiering at work (Smalltown, OK), I card whoever handles the money. So, if one guy were to hand money to his over 21 friend and his friend then pays me, I ID them both. The reason is legality. If the 21yr old is buying for the minor who just gave him cash and I sell it to them. I then stand to recieve a ~$500 fine AND lose my job if they get caught.

If i was your cashier my mind set would have been: Leave her in the car (or basically just dont go through the line together). That way if she later gets caught with booze, it's on you for providing it to her. Where as if I would have knowing sold to someone underage whois with a >= 21yr old, then its pretty fscking likely that i should have thought "Hey, they're in here together and buying it together- THEY'RE PROBABLY DRINKING IT TOGETHER."

Sometimes it helps if you ask a bit unstable... It got me really pissed the first time I went grocery shopping with my roomate. We even had separate carts and everything. She tries to ID my roomate and I asked wtf. I told her I was going to leave my $80 worth of groceries sitting on the belt if she was gonna make me put my roomate in the car and come wait in line again.

Stores don't have to check everyone in the party. It's one of those 'laws' that don't really exist. They say it's a law, but it isn't. It's really just stores going out of their way to enforce a stupid drinking age in the first place. There is no justifiable reason why someone who is 21 can drink and someone who is 18 cannot.

This is common practice. If I owned a store I would do it too... $10,000 fine for first offense out here and, IIRC, 1 more offense and your liquor license is gone which is a huge cash flow. Too much to risk...

LOL, only in America...

So, you can:

1. Drive at 16 (and get married - if you're a girl)
2. Get drafted - kill or be killed, with the state's blessing - at 18;
3. Buy and smoke tobacco at 18.
4. But only at 21 you can actually drink...

you guys are totally screwed...
