Don't blame the cashier, she's just doing their job.

I'd have walked out. Fvck them.

In retrospect I should have gone out to the car too and we would have gone to Publix. Now, I avoid that cashier.

we live together, asswipe. i'm 23 and i'm going to drink. she's my living partner and she's going to go grocery shopping with me. we like to go together to make sure she gets the right gardenburgers and I get the right hot dogs. whether or not she drinks some of my beer at home is irrelevent and on my head, not the store's, just like any teenager drinking their parent's booze is on the parent's head. i am the only one paying, it's my safeway club card, i'm the one pushing the cart, and it's my car that it's going into. she's not buying booze, so she shouldn't get carded.

Hey, whatever it takes, eh, buddy?

I said no, since she isn't and it doesn't matter. She said that they're not allowed to sell to "young couples where one person isn't 21."

WFT!?!?

Then she said, "I'll sell to you this time because I know the next person in line and they aren't working for the cops, but next time she has to stay in the car."

WHAT THE FVCK DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE IF SHE IS IN THE CAR OR IN THE STORE?

FVCK YOU, SAFEWAY.

I mean, I assume this is just a specific store policy and not some new state (CA) or nationwide thing I don't know about? Christ, next thing you know, they won't sell to parents with their children with them. Last time I was in the Safeway down the street they didn't even card me.

Anyone else encountered anything like this?

be happy she sold you the beer, she was doing you a favor...

and yeah, it's standard policy both upstate new york (where i go to school), and around here in MA (where i live).

Usually they post that sh!t on a placard right on the register, too.

the rule makes no sense at all otherwise you should only legally be able to buy enough alcohol for yourself

how about the next time two people go into a liquor store to buy a keg

obviously this beer isn't for them we are gonna need 25 i.d. 's to make sure that every that will be drinking it is over age

if they would let that person buy it themselves when no one was with them than it destroys any purpose that it can possibly serve

I will second that it isn't just Safeway, Harris Teeter in NC does it but I've not had trouble @ Food Lion (but given HT is the "high class" grocery store and FL is the "ghetto" one, this makes sense). And while I understand the reason, I still think its just an irritant and doesn't do ANYTHING to stop underage drinking.

Amen. Guy at Olive Garden got me one of those dessert drinks with Kahlua in it; I guess it was obvious that I wasn't trying to get tanked and he got it for me neway even though he didn't ask for my ID & I was like 19 or 20 at the time

You see it is a guy being cool. But he was really going out on a limb to be a 'nice guy'. I don't see how you can hold it against a server or cashier for asking for ID.

What happens if I sell alcohol to an underage person?

Selling alcohol to someone under 21 can result in criminal charges against you. If injury or death occurs because you sold alcohol to someone under 21, you can be sued in civil court. This is known as 'dram shop liability.'
If you are convicted of selling alcohol to an underage person, it is a Class 1 misdemeanor and, unless you get an active jail sentence, the court must impose a sentence that includes a minimum mandatory fine of $250 plus $100 court costs plus 25 hours of community service!

If you are convicted a second time within four years, the fine is increased to $500 and the community service hours are increased to 150 hours.

Any misdemeanor conviction goes on your criminal record. Most school, job, law enforcement and military applications ask people to reveal whether they have been convicted of a crime. Some will not consider applicants if they have a criminal record.

Your business can face administrative charges and penalties ranging from a fine to loss of ABC permits.

In addition, you could lose your job. Many stores will fire an employee if they sell alcohol to someone under 21.

Yes they do that at most of the liquor stores I've been to. Here's a trick - next time tell them that it is your sister (or a family member). They seem to be more lenient (at least to me they were).

I've experienced this also. I'm 23, but before i was 21, I was with someone trying to buy alcohol and was refused. This happened at a UDF and at a Kroger. I've also been in various stores and overheard this type of thing with other people. However, a few weeks ago i was in a state liquor agency, and in line in front of me was a kid who looked 18 (at best) with his mom. He was selecting stuff for his high school graduation party, which everyone knew due to their less than quiet discussions. They each had a couple of bottles of various liquor, and set them on the counter. The guy rang them up without saying a word. Go figure.

I was with my uncle, he was 29. My mom called me on my cell and asked me to have my uncle pick her up some beer, so, we both went into the beer store and he had me tell point out what she wanted. So, I was with him, and they refused to sell it to him.

had that happen with my brother and I at binny's( i was 18 my brother was 26).

I was in Vegas once, both me and my friend were 26 and we went to buy some beer, we get to the register and he is behind me buying something else while i paid for the beer, but we were talking. They then refused to sell it to me, even though I had ID, my friend had ID, but it expired a couple of days earlier, he lives in NYC and didnt notice because he doesnt drive...he tried showing his social security card with it and they still refused...he told them that it was enough to get him on a plane, but not to buy his beer.

no luck...so i said, what if we leave and i come back in like 10 minutes, she said, no luck if she saw me there later in the day she would have to instruct other people not to sell to me...

and this is VEGAS! WTF?!?!

Yup. Ive gone in plenty of times underage while the person buying the alcohol gets carded. But then again amdskip, our college town is so damn small I dont think anyone cares really.

Next time just tell them she's your daughter. If they say you're too young for her to be your daugther, just say, "Well she calls me Daddy every night." They should sell it to you then.

It's not just a safeway thing. A 7-11 here wont sell beer to a group if anybody is under 21.
