I guess my hearing sucks, but I think she's a poor quality Whitney Houston wannabee (The non-crackhead Houston of the 20 years ago). Ever notice she doens't hold notes out very long without "souling" them up? I think that's b/c she knows she is off key, but it's harder to tell if she doesn't hold the note out long enough for you to notice.

Yea, another vote that you're hearing just sucks and you're talking out of your ass.
Mariah Carey has been trained from birth when it comes to singing. Her mother was/is an accomplished Opera singer, and Mariah has been exposed to that her whole life. By age 10, she could recreate any note in a musical piece or from a song just by hearing it once. She has a 7 octave voice, which is seriously impressive when you consider that normal people only usually utilize 2 octaves. She has pure talent, it's just that she doesn't maximize her own potential anymore.
When she first entered the music scene, she was writing and producing all of her songs. People try to pass her off as an airhead at times, but when you consider that 90% of singers in the music industry just sing songs that have been written and produced by other people besides themselves, she's completed a feat in itself. Take Whitney Houston for example - she has never had a hit that she wrote or produced. She does nothing more than enter a studio, sing, and leave - the REAL musical talent is created by someone else.
Mariah has done nothing for the past 13 years but write songs and produce her own songs. She has released more material than artists who have had careers that span multiple decades. This is in part the reason for her current downfall - overexposure. She's a true workaholic, and until recent over publicized breakdown, she would go without sleep for DAYS at a time so that she could work on her material. She's released 10 albums, more number one songs than any other current living artist or group, and spent more weeks at #1 than ANY ARTIST EVER - more than Elvis and the Beatles. She the most successful female singer in the world, selling more than any other female artist. I think that this is the reason her "breakdown" was so publicized, and she's taken a lot of heat for it. The public likes to see someone who has received Iconic status fail, and this thread is evident of that.
Call her what you want, but at the end of the day, she has earned her millions. If that's stupid, then I seriously hope that I can attain that level of stupidity one day.

I saw Hanson's acoustic show last week. It was actually VERY good. They have come a long way since MmmBop.
I will stand behind them as good artists. Most people are just pissed because they accomplished more by the time they hit 18 (one of them isn't even there yet) than most people will accomplish in their lifetime. Not only that, but they get to tour the world with their brothers.
I met them too, got autographs, you know. They're pretty friendly.

OF COURSE I'm talking out of my ass. It's my OPINION on MUSIC. This isn't quantifiable research.Yea, another vote that you're hearing just sucks and you're talking out of your ass.
I'm gonna play the "woop-dee-doo" card on this one. Exposure to music at an early age definitely helps you along, but it's not gonna save the day. Tonal memory means fvck all. I can also parrot back to you most any tune after hearing it only once. I've got great tonal memory, but I freely admit that I am not that great of a singer by far.Mariah Carey has been trained from birth when it comes to singing. News flash: Not everyone is a songwriter AND a singer. If you think that someone who is "strictly" a singer just walks into the studio sings and leaves and manages to sell a hit this way, then you are now the one talking out of your ass. I've only done a little bit of studio work and it's enough to tell me that it isn't an in-and-out stand around grandma's piano for an hour and then off to the bank to cash my royalty check process. When she first entered the music scene, she was writing and producing all of her songs. I can also parrot back to you most any tune after hearing it only once. I've got great tonal memory, but I freely admit that I am not that great of a singer by far. 7 octaves is impressive, if that's even true, but see my assertion above - I don't believe she can hold most of those notes in tune for more than 2-3 beats. Even if she can pull 7 octaves, there's a big difference between what you can VOCALIZE and what you can actually SING.Mariah Carey has been trained from birth when it comes to singing. Additionally, you are nuts if you think songwriting is the only part of "real" musical talent. If that's the case, I'm gonna bring a recorder next time I go to karaoke and recruit a slam dunk Grammy winner since apparently all you need to do is make a cover of a well-written song. Remember Az Yet? I didn't think so. Apparently you need more than a battery of songs written by Babyface, Peter Cetera and Brian McKnight to achieve some lasting success. Maybe that Houston chick does something more than wander into the studio and wail for a couple hours. But then again, I never offered commentary on her songwriting abilities (which are average at best), just that her singing abilities aren't that great. When she first entered the music scene, she was writing and producing all of her songs. I started to pay attention to her when a little girl that went to the same voice studio as I was cast in one of her videos (Butterfly, I think it was called), and I started to watch for Mariah Carey, and I was not impressed at all.Mariah has done nothing for the past 13 years but write songs and produce her own songs. I don't download music, so I'm gonna have to take your word for it. But Kenny G has a world record to his name for holding a note on his saxophone, and I don't think he's anything to rave about either.Would you like my me to provide you some examples of some of her songs where she holds a note for quite a while? Download "Never Forget you", "Without You", "Lead the Way", or "Never to Far" - IIRC, she holds her notes in these songs for an astronomically long time.
What do you mean by "exact key?" A scale? That's pretty elementary. As for your tonal memory, if I were to hit a single key on a piano, could you reproduce the exact key without any variance just from hearing it once?

Uhh right. I've been singing all my life. In 1996 I was among the 20 highest scorers in my voice part in the NJ All State Chorus. I took formal voice lessons for 4 years. I most recently played The Prince in Cinderella. I'm not listing my resume to make myself sound good, I'm just trying to demonstrate that when it comes to singing and music, I've got a reasonably solid base of knowledge and experience. If I ere to hit 5 keys at random, could you reproduce them perfectly after hearing them only once? It's a simple question. Yes, most accomplished musicians can do this, but Mariah was able to do this when she was a young child. By calling it "elementary" you've proven that you ideed do not know what you're talking about.
You didn't type the words "tonal reproduction" at any point, and even if you did, you invented that term. I've never heard it used except to describe the musical quality of instruments and microphones and the like. Also, you said that you have excellent tonal memory - I never said anything about tonal memory, but instead I said Tonal Reproduction. There's a big difference.
No need to discuss this any further, even the link you provided goes again your own opinion that "her singing abilities aren't that great".
