She's in a business where your image is part of your profession. She does no more than the majority of female artists, so why is she singled out? I'd say she would be exploiting her body if she posed in playboy, etc, but she's just wearing clothes. When you boil it down, you're basing your argument on what kindd of garments she's wearing, and it's pretty weak.

I do, but I also think that the image they want to represent and the actual person themselves are still two separate entities.

The argument is that she dresses objectionably in her videos. I am singling her out because the thread is about her. And yes, many women exploit their bodies, but do I have to respect them all?

No, you're argument was that she simply dresses like a skank. You offered up evidence of her recent music videos, but as I pointed out, a video is not an accurate representation of how someone really is, and it's really a subjective opionion - would you call an actor gay because he played a gay character? No - but then why is a music artist any different?

Damn, these quote trees are long. Anyway, I base my assumptions of Mariah Carey on what she portrays... music, videos, etc. I don't stalk her and therefore will never have an accurate portrayal of how she dresses. I called her a skankish dresser based upon all the evidence I had accumulated concerning her style of dress. Recently, I've viewed music videos where I have observed "skanky" style, hence my generalization that she dresses in the said manner. Of course we can't make generalizations about what we see on film. After watching Forrest Gump I'm pretty sure Tom Hanks isn't mentally challenged. Film and tv are a totally different genre where fact and fiction are easily discernable. It's a movie, they're acting, they're not real. The exception would be documentaries. The music industry is all about selling an image. To me, Mariah was "skanking" out her image to perpetuate her fame. The statement, "She dresses like a skank," was used in lieu of viewing her videos. This statement is still true depending on where you look to for evidence...her recent videos. HOWEVER, It can also be twisted to imply that I wanted to include her privat e life, which I did not intend. Of course, this is all subjective and what I find skanky some may find perfectly normal.
