so what ea address do we send our: return policy questions, criticisms, flames?
i'm not gonna set up a "membership account" so they can sign me up for their advertisers as well.
only thing i could find is "piracy@ea.com" and "piracy-online@ea.com" nice that you have to sign up for help, but not to keep them from losing money.

Wow...just wow.

You would think will all the bad publicity about spyware in software, they wouldnt try this. And on top of that, it makes NO SENSE.

First, its a game that takes place in 2142! How are ads going to fit into that? I'm supposed to be blasting away at walkers, while trying to dodge the giant "Sprite" billboard? Oh no wait, these are *targeted* ads. I'll be dodging billboards that have the latest newegg special on them. Ads in a sports game, I can understand, as long as it doesnt go overboard - it fits the theme. But in a futuristic shooter?!

Secondly, why is the spyware even necessary? You want to put ads, thats one thing. You want to put targeted ads, you can put in spyware, or you can have the user click a few boxes about their likes/dislikes. Ads are enough of a turnoff, but ads + spyware?!? You've got to be kidding me.

Unbelievable. I'm just in awe over the stupidity.

Well, EA just made my decision even easier. There was a slim chance I was going to buy

BF2142 if I saw it on sale for <$35. But now, there is no way I am going to pay for a

game and get my computer scanned so ads can be pumped into it.

Just uninstalled BF2 as well as the 2142 Demo. EA can go work with Big Brother......err...I mean Fatherland Securi........no wait.......HOMELAND SECURTIY, that's it!! After this stunt, they can suck my left testicle before I'll consider buying from them again, Crysis included.

Clear-Channel is EA's cousin.

The advertising program in Battlefield 2142 does not access any files which are not directly related to the game. It does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, or surfing history.

BF 2142 delivers ads by region. The advertising system uses a player?s IP address to determine the region of the player, assisting to serve the appropriate ads by region and language. For instance, a player in Paris might be presented with ads in French. The information collected will not be repurposed for other uses.

Battlefield 2142 also tracks ?impression data? related to in-game advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to help advertisers qualify the reach of a given advertisement.

You shouldn't have to pay $50 to stare at streaming ads while you play, spyware or not. If they want to sell the game for say $20, you accept that you get a deal up front in return for the ads. There are too many other good games out to waste time with this garbage from EA.

Eh, not quite. Its just a different brand of stupidity. Good to hear they're not cookie scanning - that would be just ridiculous.

Recording your IP? No biggie - even AT does it.

But tracking "impression data"? Makes me want to vomit. It sounds to me, as if it is statistically analyzing how effective the ads are at getting your attention. Which spots are the best, the kind of ad that gets the most attention, etc. On top of that, they're essentially hijacking your system resources in order to benefit them, and annoy you more. Basically, trying to scientifically analyze the best way to annoy the crap out of your paying customers - brilliant.

Next thing you know, we'll have the "Loading Screen brought to you by Coca Cola" - that'll sure give them an incentive to cut down on loading times.

Perhaps the best player in the round can be the "Nike player of the game".

Why drive around futuristic dune buggies, when we can be driving around the brand new "2143 Jeep Grand Cherokee"?

Think about the possibilities! Maybe soon you'll be able to gulp down a Starbucks Frappucino when your sprint meter runs dry, for that extra boost!

Hell, they can even brand the capture points, and hardcode the audio into the game - "We've just lost Burger King! We're being overrun!"

When BF2 special forces came out, with the new weapons, I knew they had reached a turning point of shamlessness. The new infantry weapons were pretty much far superior to anything you could get from the stock game. But you could use them on ANY server. After about a week or so of getting raped by the Special Forces players, I gave up on the game entirely. They set it up so you had to buy their expansion in order to be on the same level playing field - this is heresy, and something this diabolical was never done before.

Now they're putting ads in a game where ads just do NOT belong. Its inexplicable, aside from pure, unadulterated greed.

Apperently to play Battlefield 2142, you have to uninstall this critical security patch from Microsoft. Why would EA need kernal access to your computer? If thats not spyware, I don't know what is.

Players who have the Windows security update KB917422 installed may suffer from an application error when running Battlefield 2142. This error can be solved by uninstalling the KB917422 update

Wow. Im very saddened by what Im reading. Ive been with the BF series since its inception. Was there for the frag fest of a lifetime called DC, the slump and suffering known as BFV, and a seeming revival in BF2 (we gotta admit, for those of us that suffered through BFV, BF2 was a GODSEND). And if something isnt done to correct this, I must agree with many of you that BF2 will be the LAST EA title I play. I will be absolutely furious if this isnt found to be against some form of privacy law, cause NFS carbon was going to FINALLY have my beloved 1970 Chevelle SS duking it out alongside the Supra. 🙁 If this is not reversed, EA will never see another penny from me.

Shame on you EA, you had the chance to be the uncontested BEST game publisher in the world, but your greed, your bottom line, your investors have corrupted everything that made you one of the best. I hope that the next great Game Developers never have to suffer your profiteerism. RIP DICE Batlefield 1942 will always be a classic.

Ah, well, that makes it all better then. We can certainly rest easy and believe everything put forward by lawyers representing massive corporations.

Sorry, did I get a haze on you from that luggie?

No perhaps I was a little harsh there, but EA has done nothing but frustrate me while bleeding my pocket. BF2 was a fun, addicting game that I perfected my favorite kits in. It was visually stunning when I first played it with all details maxed and to this day still looks very good. The gameplay was matched very well to with the actual game and (when everything worked accordingly) it was pretty much unmatched in terms of great online first person shooters.

However, it was the way in which EA marketed it, its mods, and handled the support of the actual game itself that drove me crazy. With an array of problems from day one to....right now it never has been corrected properly and instead they have moved on to another game that is more or less a mod with spyware attached to it. This is of course after they had blead the BF2 series until it was pale with all of the BF2: SF, Euro Forces, Armored Fury additions, types of expansions that other companies like Valve provide free of charge. Add that with the fact that they prohibit the use of native widescreen resolutions even after hacking the files to allow it and you have yourself a company that is money hungry, tight arsed, and in bed with every kind of advertising firm under the sun so they can counter their cost of producing a worthy product and therefore rip-off the consumer.

Then, don't even get me started on the crappy LOTR's series they bought rights to and trashed down the pipe. You have no idea how happy I was when I learned that they didn't acquire Project Offset.

Sorry for going on a tangent, but this company stinks in more ways than one and when you combine all of their ridiculous practices it just deserves to be harshly commented on.

No, not quite. That is just a poor excuse for them to use IGA as a spyware company.

Think about it, wouldn't there be a better way to find the region in which the gamer resides in? I brought this up on the Video forum's thread and I'll say the same thing here that I said there.

If they were really using this just to get the gamers region correct so that the advertisments could make sense (i.e. be in the gamer's language, advertise products around the gamer's region, etc.) then why do they need to constantly be able to monitor your computer? I mean, a mandatory registration requiring a zip code could do what they say their IGA is doing. And if the game gets sold and another user comes to own it, they'll have to register it once installing it as well. I would think creating something such as that would be better than having a company constantly track impression data so as to do what BD2003 suggested:

Like I said, Clear-Channel is EA's cousin. They want to put ads everywhere just because it helps reduce the cost of making a product. How? By getting money from companies that want to put ads in their product so that buyers of the product might magically and unconsciously go buy something they flashed at them.

EA has made a new low for video game publishers to hit. Congrats EA, you're the lowest of the low.

I believe there is a regression in that security update. Software that has problems due to this update isn't necessarily trying to do something bad. MS fault in this case I think but certainly correctable by the 3rd party vendor (EA in this case).

If you want to be mad at EA about this, be mad at the fact that this update was from August and they haven't yet fixed their software. You could also get mad at MS because of the regression but MS typically fixes such regressions within a few weeks (sometimes a private fix is available in hours to premier customers).
