He's 7, so he could care less about the plot as long as it looks cool. If it can at least halfway keep my interest, it's worth it. I'll give it a go tomorrow and report back.

There is a cute martian princess in a skimpy outfit that should keep your interest.

Well shit. I started this thread and didn't even see the movie. My son changed his mind at the last minute and wanted to see Journey 2 The Mysterious Island, so that's what we saw. It was ok, tolerable. For the type of movie it is, it held my interest.

Don't ever ask for our advice again. I saw Journey 1 for the 3D and it was crapfest of epic proportions.

The 3D for Journey 2 was actually some of the better 3D I've seen since Avatar as far as live action movies go. Like I said, It's a kid's movie, for me it was tolerable. Not going to say it was horrible if it wasnt.

What I really don't understand is why someone would green light John Carter for $250m? I've heard this is really not a bad movie but it was set up to fail in Hollywood terms based on budget alone.

I had a friend who wanted to see this movie, and I knew nothing of it, didn't see any trailers, any commercials for it, knew nothing of the story - I went along and saw the movie in theaters and was entertained, I thought it was a pretty good movie.

Could it have been better? Yes. Could it have been worse? Yes.

Then I'm seeing all over the internet so much negativity surrounding this movie from people who will never see the movie even once?

What? I guess I don't "get it".

I suppose the lack of vulgar language and titties will keep many ATOT forum posters away from the movie 😛

Though on the flip side, every one of you saw Jar Jar Binks multiple times, and the creatures in this movie do not even begin to compare on a scale to Jar Jar.

"Kids' movie?" It's a bastardization of classic literature. I had no qualms with the 3D itself, just with a movie that has an entire scene and scenario concocted so that a boss can stick a tape measure in someone's face and the audience can go "Ooooo! 3D!" Avatar was guilty of that too: The "romp" in his new body was so that Cameron could justify his character running haphazardly through a garden kicking 3D dirt toward the camera, but his disability was concocted in the first place to add a dramatic twist to the concept of entering another body and the scene also served to show his elation at being able to walk again. The entire scene and the scenario that set it up was concocted for no other reason than having that tape measure pointed between the two lenses and then retracted. Stupid. I've got nothing against raw entertainment, but I wouldn't let my kids watch trash that only makes them dumb when there is real entertainment to be had. The only reason I sat through it was to see how thoroughly it soaked Jules Verne's grave with urine. It shouldn't exist. "Kids' movie" is no excuse. Brendon Fraser should not ever work in motion pictures again after that and "Furry Vengeance." I hope he was paying back a few favors when he chose to power through those. 🙄

Edit: after checking his filmography, he's been in movies every year of his career since he became active in 1991 until Vengeance and hasn't made a movie since. +1 for consequences! He got lucky to be in "Crash" (Best Picture). I see that he made a movie called "Journey to the End of the Night" shortly before the first Journey and I wonder if he or his agent accidentally obligated him to that other crap-fest thinking that they were the same thing ("Journey to the X of the X")?

i saw it this afternoon. it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't ground breaking either. there wasn't violence for the sake of violence. the movie told a story, probably not up to the original book, but it was a decent story.

the cast did well. they aren't going to win any major awards but they did well. i thought that the princess was smoking hot. she is just my type.

i know that there are multiple books but i hope that they don't make any sequals.

I'm out of words to slam disney on this movie

Possible $150 million write-down: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/john-carter-box-office-disney-flop-298610?

The movie, which Disney spent about $350 million to make and market, took in $30.2 million domestically over its opening weekend and another $70.6 million internationally. It's likely to top out at around $300 million theatrically worldwide, or possibly $350 million, though its break-even point for Disney is closer to $650 million. DVD and pay TV will help stem the bleeding, but a significant write-off is inevitable.
😵

That's a crazy break-even point for one movie. What a disaster if this holds.

word on the street is lots of egos to be massaged - the director made a lot of great movies for Pixar. Green lighted by previous administration - after dropping 250m it's a little too late to pull the plug.

That's a crazy break-even point for one movie.

Welcome to every AAA tent pole released by any major studio for the past 2 decades. That's why everyone and their mom is trying to get into the <10m (Paranormal Activity, Project X) game.

I honestly kind of want to see this in the theatre now, just to see if it looks like $250 million up there on the screen. I can't believe they didn't even film this in 3D and it still cost that much. Crazy.

I saw one clip of some huge white beast thing and I have to say it looked pretty impressive. But then again, I never see these movies so I can't compare to the current "norm." Hell, when I saw Silent House, the Wrath of the Titans trailer was actually kinda cool...Maybe I'm going soft 😀

That trailer was cool until Worthington's expressionless mug showed up on screen. That guy is freaking terrible.

Saw this Friday night. Was a pretty decent adventure/action movie. Nothing groundbreaking or amazing but it was a fun movie.

One of the dumbest names ever for a sci fi action movie, might as well have named it tree trunk or something else forgettable, whether based on books nobody has read or not. Reviews indicate it's probably half decent, but nothing great. The premise sure sounds absurd to me and a lot of others it appears.
