I don't understand what drives(or doesn't) people to these movies. Gotta be the advertising, which I guess wasn't done too well with John Carter. They should have pretended it was a comic book...

I thinit's the advertising too. I saw a preview for it when we saw Star Wars EP I, and it looked good. But I haven't seen a whole lot of advertising for it since. The only reason I even remembered it was because my son reminded me.

I really enjoyed the John Carter of Mars and related novels by ERB, but so far, the trailer looks like the usual Hollywood crap...AKA Transformers.

I'll probably wait for it to hit the Redbox.

The review in our newspaper of John Carter was pretty positive. Just relax and enjoy the ride.
I read all the books and so will go see this (when it comes to the $2 theater.)

Well I've heard comparisons to House of the Devil, so that sold me and it also helps me understand why others may not like it so much. Tonnes of people hate House of the Devil, but I freaking love it.

I think its downfall was following Avatar which is still pretty fresh in people's minds especially after the massive massive Avatar phase that the public just went through. Not just with the release but also with the dvd/blue rays it was like a second massive dose.

To follow in those heels is to look like a copy cat wannabe. Throw Disney's name into the mix and it just looks like an Avatar for kids. Also it's the first for me to realize that it was based off a book so I'm guessing a large base of the viewers are unaware of its origins.

That's going to compound upon the copy-catish nature of the film and that, IMO, is why it's destined to flop. Esp with a $250 mill budge. Yeesh who ever thought that would be a good idea?

Apparently, this movie has everyone at Disney scared shitless, because it's expected to bomb at the BO. I've been pretty resentful of it because it almost got Johnny Depp's Lone Ranger film killed.

It looks better than your average crap movie, which still isn't all that good. I'm probably not going to see it, but if I had a 7 year old son to hang out with, there are plenty of worse movies that I might have to see.

Never heard of it until now, and after reading up on it, the plot seems a bit dated.

Have a feeling this is going to flop hard with $250 million invested.

The Hunger Games looks like it will do well though.

3RD UPDATE, 1:30 PM: Based on the noon averages, my sources are predicting box office John Carter Box Office Predictionresults for Walt Disney Studios’ John Carter (playing in 3,749 theaters) around $9.5M to $11M today and $27.5M to $33M for the weekend. For a smaller budget film, that would be considered a good opening — but not one costing $250+M. That’s well behind Universal’s holdover hit toon Dr Seuss’ The Lorax (3,746 theaters) which based on the noon averages will finish its second weekend with between $38M and $40M, an excellent hold of -46%. Today’s numbers for the $75M-budget Illumination Entertainment fare are estimated between $9M and $9.5M but will rise significantly on Saturday because of the parents-with-kids bump. As for other major releases today, Paramount’s A Thousand Words (1,890 theaters) sstarring Eddie Murphy and Open Road’s Silent House (2,124 theaters)appear about $10M for the weekend.
