The state line effect is something I would not have anticipated to be so strong. The dark splotches in the west (other than Utah) are mostly reservations.

I’m worse than that. I want to require that folks pass a basic regional geography/natural history exam or they have to leave, even the natives. Simple stuff: identify the Colorado River on a map and draw an arrow indicating the direction of flow. Which city is higher in elevation, Phoenix or Flagstaff?
