It was pretty obvious what was going to happen imo, the tree was already growing toward the house and the hinge was way too shallow based on that, it probably needed to be 3/4s of the way through and even then it would likely just twirl around on them without something very stout dragging it in the other direction.

On the upside, they have plenty of new lumber to rebuild the house with.

A combination of wedging and pulling could've gotten it where it needed to be, but you can't have a sloping backcut. There's zero reason to ever do that. It's always wrong.
