The state line effect is something I would not have anticipated to be so strong. The dark splotches in the west (other than Utah) are mostly reservations.
 
I mean, the mountain west states are just amazing. If I could keep my job or something like it and move out there, I definitely would. Need to shut the door behind me though, no one wants overcrowding!

I’m worse than that. I want to require that folks pass a basic regional geography/natural history exam or they have to leave, even the natives. Simple stuff: identify the Colorado River on a map and draw an arrow indicating the direction of flow. Which city is higher in elevation, Phoenix or Flagstaff? Here is a picture of cacti, circle the saguaro.
