That's how common gunfire is there.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was that thing that just happened, were Brazilian cops did some kind of huge raid and it all went Wild West. We've seen stuff like that in Israel during intifada and a few other spats, Israeli troops sending hate down an alleyway and there are people standing there 30ft away just watching. It does take balls to stand in one spot when people are spraying automatic fire back and forth, but a paycheck could also be possible.
I just clicked the link and first part says:

Edit: Violence in the Favelas is a significant issue. One made worse by Brazil essentially importing American Gun Culture. Often more than not, gangs obtain weapons that are superior to the police employed to curtail crime. This, however, is a movie shoot filmed at Morro do Borel Tijuca‎, Brazil.

I wonder if the extras get anything for being in it, I kinda doubt the checks now. When Ben Stiller did Escape at Dannemora, every inmate there got a pint of Ben and Jerry's as a thank you for putting up with the filming.

I remember seeing an article published around that time, proposing, for parody-purposes, a theory of "Continental Drip". Arguing that the continents had a shape that suggested they were "dripping" from the north Pole, southward. I think that might have been a deliberate mockery of the simplistic "they fit together" argument. I think the idea of 'continental drift' had a long and complicated and contested history.

Whaddya know, there's a wiki page about it

I love what happened here though, it was supposed to convey what an average westerner would think crime looked like in a place like that, and a few were convinced with absolutely no evidence that it was.

I just scanned up the page and can't see a single post from anyone absolutely convinced. Did you not notice my mentioning it could be "check motivated"? Sdifox noted the violence favelas are renowned for. Absolute conviction not found.

Here's the event I mentioned, happened 4 days ago. 400 cops, 10 vehicles, a shoot out that lasted almost an entire day with 18 thugs, one cop and a bystander being killed. There was one last year that was worse. The cultural and regional misconceptions you seem to be indicating aren't supported by what was posted really, but hey, I'm glad it was a production there and not the real thing. Rio has had enough of it I think.

That sounded pretty convinced to me. Rather than waving the 'obviously fake/staged/filming' you went with 'nah man shit's just crazy there' card.

Anyhow, the point I was making was that it looks staged as shit, but since 'nah man shit's crazy there' is the common idea of westerners, it's convincing.

I lived in Buenos Aires for 7.5 years and the locals said Brasil was dangerous.

I have heard actual gunfight while in school. Someone was robbing a nearby jewelry store and a fire fight happend. There was even a cop running down the street telling everyone to hide while firing his gun into the air lol.
Later I walked by the place and the wall was full of bullet holes.

So, you took my citing of the possibility of them being movie extras to mean an absolute conviction on my part that they weren't movie extras? Uhhh, ok.

I didn't proclaim what the footage is as fact because I didn't know, and it's not obviously fake for reasons that have already been explained to you. Do you need footage of Palestinians and IDF fighting in narrow streets to convince you or something, is the notion of fighting near the public really that unfathomable to you?

Anyway.
