Ah yes, budget curriculum at the Y. Sounds appropriate for someone with millions of dollars in training and years of experience in special operations warfare to be moonlighting, with kids who just want to gtfo.

I hate to tell you Captante, but odds are very good your instructor was full of shit. That's called Stolen Valor. Or maybe I'm wrong, if you know his name roll it past Don Shipley if you're curious. https://videos.extremesealexperience.com/Fake-Navy-Seal-Verification

IDGAF? (sorry) :p

This was a long time ago as I mentioned.... had to be like 1987-88 and cost about $45.
(Far as I recall the instructor was doing volunteer work)

FWIW he DID have a bunch of sailor-looking tats! ;)

If you got PADI certified it's for life.

My brother got his in 92 and his last dive was 93.

We're going to Aruba in 2 weeks and few months ago he looked up all his stuff and got a new C-card now so he is going to dive when we go.

I think you're supposed to do it all over again if it's been longer than 10 years. Feel like I read that somewhere a long time ago. Probably depends on the facility/outfit you're at.

Nope. You have it for life.

Most dive shops ask you how long it's been since your last dive but if you lie and say it's been a month there is nothing they can do about it. But if it's been longer than a year they typically require a refresher if you tell em it's been more than a year. A refresher depends on the shop.

The one my brother has to do is watch a 25 minute video, then practice some skills in the water for like 5-10 minutes, and then we're diving. And it's been 28 years since his last dive.

Neither PADI nor NAUI certification cards expire, I'm not submitting otherwise. I'm specifically addressing the resorts, boats and shops that reference your dive log and maybe online info to vet your experience level and help ensure your safety. Lying about your experience is not safe. Acting like a 10+ year break from diving won't affect you underwater is also not safe, which is why some places say do the whole course again if it's been that long. The place my fam went in the Caymans is PADI 5 star, looked it up and aha, saw this under "Diver Freshness" Probably where I saw it

Required:

  • 12-24 months since last dive = Pool Self-Check
  • 2-4 Years since last dive, Option 1 = Pool Self-Check + Orientation 1-Tank Dive
  • 2-4 Years since last dive, Option 2 = Pool Self-Check + Private Guide for your first dives
  • 4-9 Years since last dive = Full Refresher Class for PADI Re-Activate
  • 10+ years since last dive = Re-Certification

No 10min water tred, no 300m swim, or do you mean those? Well, at least he's doing something I guess. I hope you're going with, be safe!

Hey it's your anecdote, if you don't care about the details that's fine, off topic anyway.

Just to clarify .... if the guy had been lying about his military record and I found out about it (especially back then when I was much more of a hot-head) I would have had a HUGE problem with it.

However right up until you brought it up the idea had never even crossed my mind! ;)

10+ years since last dive = Re-Certification

This sounds right..... it has been at least 10 years for me.

None of those I'm sure. I honestly think those are pointless for doing SCUBA. You don't even have to know how to swim at all to be a good diver you just have to feel comfortable in the water.

We're doing shore dives that are like 20-25ft max too, at least the first one. Second dive is shore but may be a bit deeper.
