That's more a FAIL at installation / design. It's easy to get distracted in a home environment and not be as careful as you might otherwise be. A fan should NEVER be mounted right over a railing such that you can hit it!

I'm 6'6" and am constantly watching fans attached to normal height ceilings...
 
it's pretty universal. this was the fast way of rewinding cassettes. you stick the pen in the reel and twirl it around like birthday/new years noise maker.

Thanks for the explanation. Still, I don't see how that can be faster than anything but the slowest cassette decks. I only ever used a pen to retract the tape when it came out of the package and was completely unaware of this usage. I'm pretty sure that my brother and others who claimed to "get it" were talking about knowing that a pen fits and turns it but not necessarily aware that this was a "fast" rewind/FF method.
