The reason MOST people know about Titanic is because of the movie, not because they know their history. And the news panders to the lowest common denominator. Not to mention the fact James Cameron took such creative license with reality that you could now say its more of a fantasy story than anything else.

Are you serious? "Titanic" was slang for "huge disaster" for the last hundred-plus years precisely because everyone knew what it was.

WRONG!
Its TV grab worthy for the handful of people that get it, like almost anything else pulled out of modern media. The fact somebody at the news station thought it would be relevant to put "Real Life Titanic" on a graphic means either they personally forgot about the actual Titanic, or they are pandering to the LCD who doesnt know or forgot about the actual Titanic.

THATS THE JOKE!
THATS why its funny. For the handful who really know better and get the depth & complexity of the issue at hand.
