IIRC it was a bastardization of 'HiFi' to something vaguely like 'Wide/Wireless Fidelity' or something asinine. It's a completely nonsensical shorthand/acronym, doesn't mean anything except 'wireless networking'.

Of which those older, IR remotes meet the qualification of wireless.

The pic from Pompeii that really stuck with me was the skeleton of a dog that tried to cover and protect a small child. :(
