I'm not one to be happy over news of someone's death, but I really can't think of anything redeeming to say about his life. A man consumed by hatred of others.

The telling part of the article to me was---After the Watergate scandal, he jumped into the GOP vacuum in Washington and began to reshape the Republican Party in his conservative image. With a cadre of young, bright activists at his side, he formed a the National Congressional Club and other committees across the country, soliciting small donations through direct-mail pitches to thousands of people and creating a fundraising machine for the conservative cause and GOP candidates.
Helms, in short was a politician and an effective one at that. And has done much to shape the political history of the US and pioneer new tactics. By 2002 Helms was a spent force
and his death today is just a final end. It may be just my personal opinion that Hesse Helms could have done some great things and instead choose to waste his talents on being shortsighted and bigoted. And while he is now dead and gone, his legacy and many of his ideals, sadly will and does live on.

Because this guy was a bigot and like Slick says, consumed by hatred of others. Much as any death is a sad occasion it is hard to feel sorry for someone like Helms.
I do, however, feel sorry for his family and loved ones.

I am not here to defend Helms.
I am here to point out that when members of the left establishment die those of us on the right don't run around talk about how we hope they burn in hell. It is an uniquely liberal thing to claim to be compassionate and high minded then turn around and insult people after they have died. Go dig up the Jerry Fallwell thread to see what I am talking about.
