Uh, he had announced he was going to retire in 09 years ago. But he had a change of mind. But by the time he had decided he didn't want to hang it up, NBC has promised Conan the 11:35 spot. Leno talked about his retirement for ages, it wasn't until very close to the end that he wanted to stay. At that point NBC's hands were tied, if they had gave 11:35 back to Leno Conan might have left, as it turns out that would have been the better thing to do. Now they're going to lose both Leno & Conan. I can't wait until I can watch The Tonight Show with host Carson Daily.

This is the way I recall it as well.

Come on, why would Leno leave? You think he actually cares that Conan and Jimmy Fallon would get screwed here? And it's pretty obvious nobody cares about Carson Daly.

He did not announce his retirement. NBC basically gave Conan the spot without Leno's consent. Leno did not ever intend to retire. there was no change of mind. People were talking about where Leno would go next the moment NBC announced Conan taking over.

i just heard that Conan's last show will be sometime next week. He will end up well, it's his crew who's gettting the shaft - the people who sold their houses/apartments in nyc area and moved to cali, bought a house, a car, etc.

10-11 p.m. –“Law & Order” (returns March 1 with two-hour episode, 9-11 p.m. (ET); resumes in regular time slot March 8)

10-11 p.m. – “PARENTHOOD” (premieres March 2)

WEDNESDAYS

THURSDAYS
8-8:30 p.m. – “Community”
8:30-9 p.m. – “Parks and Recreation”
9-9:30 p.m. – “The Office”
9:30-10 p.m. – “30 Rock”
10-11 p.m. – “THE MARRIAGE REF” (premieres March 4; sneak preview February 28)

EXCLUSIVE! 2ND UPDATE: NBC Universal, faced with Conan O'Brien's defiance, is taking what insiders tell me is "a super tough threatening position" over his refusal to host The Tonight Show at 12:05 AM instead of 11:35 PM. "Someone's got to show NBCU that big greedy corporate dickheads can't win," one of Conan's manager-agent-lawyer-public relations "Team Conan" representatives told me. And while Jeff Zucker has not stepped up and taken responsibility for this mess he set in in motion in the first place -- by replacing Leno with Conan O'Brien as host of The Tonight Show even though Jay was No. 1 in his time slot at the time -- he's been busy behind the scenes. I've already reported how Zucker has been privately blaming Conan for the current debacle, saying "He let me down" because The Tonight Show for the last 7 months since O'Brien took over has been losing out to David Letterman in both eyeballs and advertiser-coveted demographics. (Bullshit, Zucker, you can't keep blaming others for your Zuck-ups.) Bad enough that Zucker made Conan hear about the planned move in the first place from the media.

FWIW, I personally like both.

http://thesuperficial.com/2010/01/conan_obrien_leaving_tonight_s.php

Just saw this, don't know if it has been posted here yet..

Conan O'Brien is officially bailing on NBC and ending his stint on The Tonight Show Friday, January 22, according to the New York Post:

"Conan does not currently plan on doing any more new shows after next week," a source told People magazine's Web site this afternoon.
If Jan. 22 is O'Brien's final live broadcast, the show will have ended two weeks before NBC's scheduled preemption for its 2010 Winter Olympics coverage.
NBC has declined comment.

NBC probably didn't comment because they're too busy signing The Tonight Show back over to Jay Leno who, surprise, wasn't really going to leave the network after all. TMZ reports:

Jay Leno has made a new deal with NBC, which gives him "The Tonight Show" from 11:35 - 12:35 ... sources tell TMZ
As we first reported, under the contract Jay had been working under, he was guaranteed the 10 PM hour. By moving him to 11:35, NBC was in breach of his contract and needed to negotiate a new deal. That is now done, sources tell TMZ.

I'm not even going to try to offer a better commentary than Conan's monologue last night:

"Hosting The Tonight Show has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for me - and I just want to say to the kids out there watching: You can do anything you want in life.

Unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too."

HIYO!

Fritzo already owned you, but yes he did. I know because I watched Jay religiously and when he announced it I was bummed out. If Jay had never announced it, Conan NEVER would have got offered the Tonight Show slot. NBC didn't want Conan there, it's just when they thought Jay was leaving he was really the only logical choice for successor. And once the contract to Conan has been put into place NBC had screwed themselves and Leno had to go.

This has been the best week of Late Night talk shows in a long time. I'm just sad it's at the expense of Conan :(

Yeah :( I would say "Poor Conan", but he's going to be getting millions out of this.

With NBC signing a contract with Leno this afternoon there is something happening soon, its either

1. NBC and Conan have reached a settlement
or
2. NBC is going to be raped in the courts for upwards of $110million

I'm going to laugh my ass off when Lettermen still beats Leno, and NBC has to shell out a multi-million settlement. After already admitting to losing around $200million on the Olympics + all this Zucker's heads as well as other needs to roll.

NBC denies TMZ report of Leno deal

Is Jay Leno the new (old) host of "The Tonight Show"?

Sources at NBC are denying a TMZ report claiming NBC and the talk show host have worked out an agreement that restores "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" to run from 11:35 p.m.-12:35 a.m.

The return of Leno to "Tonight" would have meant that Conan O'Brien's days as the host of "The Tonight Show" are officially numbered.

The report follows O'Brien's public refusal earlier this week to host a time-shifted "Tonight" from 12:05-1:05 a.m.

Fox needs to jump on Conan ASAP. He has a cult following, and this week has only strengthened it. They'll get viewers who only used to watch Leno/Letterman because there were no alternatives and they were just waiting for Conan to be on. They can unleash Conan to be as crazy as he wants.

Conan's staff had been telling booking agents the last show will be next Friday. Hes apparently trying to go out with a bang. I have a feeling NBC and Zucker will just yank him before that to try and silence him. But NBC is still trying to pay him nothing and prevent him from working in late night for 3.5 years so who knows.

NBC is really screwing themselves. The majority of NBC talent is taking Conan's side, so I'd expect to start seeing sniping at NBC in other shows like 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Community, etc.

David Letterman Wants Conan O'Brien On His Show

After the ugly way 'The Tonight Show' has treated Conan O'Brien, an unlikely person is jumping in to defend him -- David Letterman. "Dave would love to get Conan on his show," an insider tells me. "Not to rub NBC's noses into their huge mistake, but to welcome Conan with open arms and show him that despite the way his old network has treated him, America loves him."

Dave -- who knows first-hand what it's like to be treated badly by NBC and Leno -- hasn't reached out to Conan directly, but his staff has contacted Conan's people letting them know about the open invitation.

Hopefully the red-headed funny man will get the last laugh, courtesy of Dave! If there's ever a way to get back at NBC, bashing them on another network would certainly be it.

How so? shouldn't the same be said for when Carson left, Letterman was really the only logical choice for successor?

So, we already know that NBC doesn't do things logically.

what I want to know is: how many dicks did Leno suck back in the 80s to be able to throw this much weight around? I mean, the guy isn't that talented.

well, that would really suck. that Thursday night lineup is the only salvageable thing NBC has going, right now. And Office/30Rock seems to be getting a little long in the tooth right now...

though I do love me some Community/P&R.
